They take forever in giving these important facts. The solar panel generates 240 watts, the rear electric hub motor is 250 watts an d the battery is a 500 watts and she keeps a spare. The charge controller in an MPPT step up voltage type

WOW, I'm so inspired! I'm 61, was inside the industry for over 35 years and at my age I never had a mindset of riding an electric bike across the USA on a power assist electric bike like her. I just saw this and I want to make it my goal to do this within the next 3 years. Marissa you are a wonder, thank you.

Heres a tip for all of you watching this because you want to build something similar. And she doesnt mention it, but there is a fleeting glimpse of them on this video. The key to this system is a dc/dc charger made by a company called Genasun. The unit is the GV-Boost. Eliminates the need for a solar controller, boosts the charge from the panels and eliminates the need of an inverter.
@Lumencraft-

Thanks Doran.

The Genasun is a charge controller. It is just a boost CC, raises the voltage of the panels to match a high voltage battery. Most CC need the panels to be a higher voltage than the batteries, the Genasun and some others can work the other way.

Great video! Really inspiring! Back in the nineties, when I was in college, me and a friend rode our mountain bikes from Georgia to California. We carried all our gear and camped most nights. It was such an epic adventure. I love the inclusion of the solar and e-bike technology! We did it in the days before cellphones and affordable GPS, so our trek was decidedly low-tech, but the memories will last a lifetime. Are you camping at all? Only hotels? We would've killed to average 19mph!!! We averaged about 13, and we thought we we're beasts!

Of all the solar ebike setups I have seen, Marissa’s looks the most efficient & compact. And this was from 5 years ago! As a bike tourer & green energy advocate, I am fascinated with these solar ebike setups. I am planning a world bicycle tour and am looking to build a solar ebike set up. But most of them seem impractical & more trouble than they are worth. However, they also attract a lot of attention while on the road...so if you are keeping a daily blog of your travels, it is a good way to gain interest & drive traffic to your site. So maybe worth it for that. The other concern is that if your tour will bring you overseas, how to transport batteries as airlines have strict limits on battery size. But i am definitely interested in building my own set up. I like the compactness/efficiency of Marissa’s set up and would probably try to do something similar. At least for the US portion of my tour.

Very cool. This is what I've been wanting to do with my bicycle just for commuting here in Los Angeles. I don't want to add to the pollution of the L.A. skyline, and although I like riding a bike to work, I don't like arriving there all sweaty. An electric bicycle with a solar panel is perfect! Although my commute would be probably about 28 miles, I would like to get a little more power and speed out of my electric bike. Nineteen miles an hour is too slow to maneuver in city traffic safely. Still, Marissa is living my dream. Good for you Marissa!

I was trying to rent bike while I was on vacation. They offer ebike similar system to this one. 400 watt battery up to 70 miles range. By using more eco and never full power got only 20 miles of it. Bike was very heavy and without assistance of battery there was really hard to bike. Look like this bike much lighter, but anyway I’m impressed that that solar panel make you travel all day long and use only 25% of battery

I was searching for solar panelled bike wheels. A great place to put them. I just got home from a 60 km journey on my ebike. I am running 72 v. 18 ah battery. It took me 85 mins. to go that distance and I ran out of juice about 1/2 km from home. I had to pedal up the hill. I also have a bike trailer I could put an extra battery in, and a panel on top. I'd like to get minimum 100 kms range for now. That way I can visit neighbouring towns on a budget.

What do you do on windy days? That rig would be blown right off the road in a moderately windy day in Oklahoma (wind around 18-22 mph). On a very windy day (30-40 mph with gusts around 50 mph), you could be blown into another state. In an average month in Oklahoma, you might have 8 to 10 days you would be safe with that big solar panel.

The best part was that after she had explained all the solar and ebike system.. she just took out Rekon Jet eyewear and demonstrated how she is using that too.. :D Amazing combination of tech.. I wonder how many k of $ did she have to drop to make all of this possible.. Though, what really disappointed me.. was the measly 250W motor.. The guys who designed the system, could have installed 500 or 750w version to make it even more easy going up hills and so on. The only reasoning behind this I might find that she claimed to go after Efficiency, so maybe.. maybe 250W motor at some situations consume less than a bigger (more weight?) would do..
@1stskyejaegers914
@1stskyejaegers914 5 лет назад
Honestly I have seen where people test motors rated at "250 Watts" and NONE of them are really capped at that, just RATED at it, completely about marketing, here in the USA, we rate motors at "750 - 1000 Watt" and when you put a meter of them and really monitor them, 9 out of 10 are peaking around 800 - 900 Watts, and honestly, if your Ebike is efficient, you don't need more than about 250 - 300 Watts while cruising, all about the marketing, Specialized makes some nice Ebikes, but they take the European approach of downplaying the electric power, and it seems to appeal to the bicycle enthusiasts more who otherwise want little to do with Ebikes.

Use super capacitors as they are lighter and supposedly take a charge better when you brake. you could use that coreboard with aluminum foil hinged to get more solar power in the morning and afternoon when the sun is low I guess you could tilt the panel.. I think the cg of the panels are too high . and by elongating the trailer you would have lower cg . and less drag. I would think by now the wind has already tipped the trailer... I hope not.. But God bless you.

You will need a battery in order to even out the power drawn by the motor: just running off a solar panel is probably too variable over a variety of conditions, and you may even damage the motor if the voltage spikes on a really clear sunny day....

When your wellness is gone, you'll understand. As for journey... ever heard of The Odyssey? "Journey" is an ancient meme for us humans, and we're fundamentally a story telling species. Not that hard to understand really.

Recumbent bike with a mid drive would have been much easier.Half the drag from wind and no drag from the motor. Amazing none the less.

her windscreen is causing a ton of drag and the heavy trailer could have been lighter and they make flexible solar panels at like 1/3 weight of the aluminum frames too, amazing she got to where she is on this poor design

Bruce Nguyen Yes I was thinking the same thing that the windscreen would do more harm then good. I like the solar panel idea.The flexable solar panels are lighter and could be fit better but are I believe half as efficient as the monocrystalline panel she has..I know on my homemade ebike I can cruise at 28kmh on flat ground no wind at about 200-250 watts but I am bigger then her 6' 2'' 210 lbs. A recumbent bike would have half the drag which would allow the same 28knh at near half the watts or 150 watts.With a 240 watt panel she could likely travel all day.Also she could make a flairing out of the flexable solar panels you suggested improving her efficiency by reducing drag further as well as producing more power allowing her to go a little faster. Also hub motors are heavy but simple and reliable where a mid drive would be lighter and more efficient at a cost of being more complicated but would allow switching gears for hill climbing allowing the motor to always be working at its peak efficiency regardless of the terrain.Broken chains are the main concern so carrying a couple spare chains and a chain breaker would solve that. The more I think about it this would be a really fun adventure.

harry guy yeah maybe fun, but only if you have someone with you on a motorcycle who can give you a lift if something happens. the bendable panels are equal efficiency. the renogy ones which are discontinued were really popular, they're supposed to have a redesign out by next year. they are actually closer to 1/4 weight. they are mono cells.

harry guy the recumbent idea sounds fun. hmm...

On a recumbent, you are more comfortable than on an upright bike and thus you can ride more hours per day in comfort.
