We're here on a Greenline 48 hybrid yacht with electric motors and solar panels. Greenline Yachts was founded with a mission of preserving the environment without sacrificing comfort, it’s hybrid concept utilizes best in class technology to create a luxury boating experience without exhaust, noise or wake. All Greenline hybrid yachts operate as an electric boat, with an electric yacht motor that also acts a a generator, solar panels, and AC power onboard. The solar panels help this vessel become a solar yacht, and the hybrid system allows for efficient low speed electric propulsion with a running cost about 10 times lower than burning diesel fuel.
On the Greenline 48 we have two Volvo diesels, two 14 kilowatt electric motors that turn into 10 kilowatt generators so whenever you move with diesels your electric units regenerate power to recharge the battery. The concept of solar on a boat makes sense, and panels on the roof also recharge the batteries. The yacht interior is luxurious and gets a good review, and we perform a walkthrough interior tour like a boat show. It is a great example of yacht life, with the extra element of being an offgrid boat, or an offgrid yacht.
We’ve covered other sustainable self sufficient yachts in the past including the Silent 55 Solar Electric Catamaran produced by Silent Yachts.
Greenline Yachts also produces the Greenline 33, Greenline 39, Greenline 40, Greenline 45 Fly, Greenline 48 Coupe, and Greenline 65 OC.

I'd like to see more batteries to run the electric a little longer. Maybe enough to get 100 miles at 5mph. Maybe one of the Tesla battery packs for homes. I'm sure I'm not saying anything that they haven't already looked at though. Greenline is on the cutting edge. Very nice boats too.

Have you ever thought of the following? * using Kites as part of Sail to enhance the range and save on batteries? * using thin film solar panels printed on the kites to generate extra power? * using H2/ Fuel Cells to supplement batteries and replace Diesel completely?
@hamadilawson4396
@hamadilawson4396 3 года назад
Great question. I was considering something similar. Thin film solar photovoltaic on a sail and kite would be ideal. Even a wind turbine could be considered.

Yes but that would work on diesel to as long as your slow. I would bother during a zombie uprising to make sure i just kept moving.

Do this without so much luxury, it's not needed and try using a trimaran configuration. It gives as much solar real-estate as needed, still allows for usable space, and allows for a lighter faster result. Even adding small sails on a trimaran can be done without shading all panels.

For some people its the journey/cruise and for some its the destination, for me its the latter so I want to meet friends at a port 60 miles away, how long would it take to travel that distance.

A little more effort would be expected to keep the panels from being shaded by the radar....7:22. Be cool to see a Cebro and it's display instead of the Color display.... Bluetooth is awesome. Amazing to see hybrid tech in a boat.

SO... I have to ask... How much diesel is used to run those generators? Laws of thermodynamics says it must be similar to the power used by the electric to move the boat. So near net 0 savings.. So confused.
@sharkracer
@sharkracer 2 года назад
I saw another video where they advised you keep switching from electric to diesel. I would assume that if you're going on a long trip and you're not in a particular hurry, you would use the diesel only until the the batteries are topped off, at which point you can switch to electric and go the 20 or 30 nm, and then switch to diesel again. If the diesel is charging the battery while the boat is moving, does that use more diesel per distance compared to if you didn't use the generator to charge the battery? If the diesel usage difference is minimal, isn't that like free power to go the distance when you're on electric?
@carterjohnson25
@carterjohnson25 2 года назад
@@sharkracer it takes diesle to run the Generators. Much more than just what it would take to run the prop. generators add losts of resistance to the drive shaft as well as charging is not a 100% efficient process. For example say the deisle makes 10kw of energy, something less then 10kw, possible 20% or more will come out of the electric prop. ) It is the opposite of free energy as you put it. It is not free. Bottom line is use more diesle
@sharkracer
@sharkracer 2 года назад
@@carterjohnson25 I'm not talking about a standalone generator. AFAIK, the Greenline doesn't have a standalone genset anyway. The guy said in this video that when you are using the diesel engine, the electric motors act as generators, regenerating power to charge the batteries. My original question above was, if you compared the engine/motor combination from the boat above, compared to the same boat with the same engine but no electric motor, and you had them go the same distance, how much difference would there be in diesel consumption. And I'm simply saying that if there is negligible difference, that is 100% free power. And if there is significant difference in consumption between the two boats, then by comparing the consumption difference, we can draw a conclusion as to whether it would be more economical to just use the diesel or use a hybrid engine/motor combo like the Greenline.
@carterjohnson25
@carterjohnson25 2 года назад
@@sharkracer Somebody help me explain here. I'm seem to not be articulating well. Running the electric motors backwards is just a generator, that adds significant resistant to the drive train and burns more deisle. After the charge and discharge process (that is not 100% efficient) is net negative vs just running diesle to move the props. Regardless, there are so many usecases where the electric functionality make the extra marginal extra diesle used worth while. This is the benefit and I personally believe it is massive. For example use the electric in and out of harbor, (no diesle). Charge at the harbor for next trip. This use case cuts down on diesle though will increase your electric bill. Depending on where you live and how your power is created this could be Neutral all the way to massive savings in cost and environmental impact. Just no free energy though but burning diesle to charge batteries.

Except for the fact that they are mass produced and you actually could get yours hands on one. Without paying more than what a similar size yacht from other manufactors would cost. That said i think Silent yachts are awesome they are just not ready to mass produce anything yet, and therefore can not be compared to greenline.
