The 2 Fronius IG 4000 4 kW inverters on my buddy Larry's 2007-era solar system were going kaput, so I installed 2 brand-new SMA Sunny Boy 6.0-us inverters (SB6.0-1SP-US-41) to replace them.
At the same time, i decided to open up the Tesla Powerwall gateway Solar City put in around 2017 and take a look at how it operates.
"Commissioning" the new inverters is also covered.

Another great video Ward - really informative thanks. Our 10KWp system was installed 2007 and has 2x Sunny Boy 4000US inverters. Our panels have certainly lost some production capacity over time but these inverters have had 100% uptime since 2007.

Thanks. Yeah, the old Fronius were already replaced once under the 5 year warranty back before 2012 -- so they just don't seem to last. Hopefully we'll have as good a luck with the Sunny Boys as yourself.

You could try cleaning your PV panels, they can lose up to 35% performance if not cleaned in two years

@@setsolarsetsolar8501 You are correct of course, but our bigger problem was that the 3 MPP inputs on the SunnyBoy are current limited to 10 amps each -- which, if I had read the manual closely, I would have known. Went back and wired the DC A and DC B inputs in parallel and production came right up -- was capped at 2.5 kW apiece otherwise.

Great video. What is the maximum number of solar panels you can connect in series with the sunny boy inverter. I believe the max input voltage is 550 volts so in theory you should be able to connect 10 panels that have an open voltage of 48v. Is my understanding correct?

@chris p , I have 24 370w panels, two strings of 12 connected SB6.0 red ones different to these. You can connect up to 9kw, load voltage 480v.

The default install for the Neurio (current monitor) in the tesla panel is that it subscribes to a WiFi connection provided by the gateway box and the gateway grabs data from the Neurio and displays it in Tesla's displays. There's an alternative connection that uses an RS485 connection to the gateway.

There is a CANbus connection from the gateway to the powerwall(s)-they daisy chain on the CANbus with a termination resistor on the last powerwall. There's a lot of wires from the Neurio that can make it hard to pick out.

Thanks, I have been wondering how the current/power gets introduced into the utility..... still looking for a good electrical engineering description for that. As a test, I suppose to test and see for certain, on a good sunny day, while running air conditioner or oven, while watching utility meter, I could turn off and on the solar and or battery breaker and the meter should reflect the reduced and increased power usage from utility.

Ward, that was fun Thank You for playing the Blue Danube I missed it. I was impressed with your blue painters tape improvisation as a lockout tag out method. Are you going to troubleshoot the original inverters and see what went wrong, or just recycle them for the copper. Larry did a good job you should hire him as your cameraman.

Eventually, Larry is going to replace his array with modern panels -- which will give him more power in less space -- and he's making noises about using (some of) the old panels and inverters on a nearby hill to run his well pump and out buildings. So we might get into it. The Fronius are known to have insulation problems on the back of one of the power boards, so that may well be the problem.
