Great Demonstration.., It gets the message across quite well I think. Thermosiphon flow is powered in part by gravity(density changes interacting with gravity cause movement). Because of this the areas where energy is being added to cause the density change need to be as vertical as possible to cause movement. Up on the hot side, down on the cool. Your rig here is mostly horizontal so very little flow...
