Soldering with hand irons, or hand coppers, or soldering coppers, is the traditional way to solder that's been done for generations. The hand irons are heated up in a "solder pot" and the copper (or other metal) components of a roof (or other application) are soldered with bar solder. In this video a built-in 20-ounce copper gutter on the Warren County (PA) courthouse is being installed by The Durable Slate Company of Columbus, Ohio. The hand irons are cleaned during use by quickly dipping the hot irons into a jar of 50% water and 50% Ruby Fluid flux. New job as a fabricator soldering with the hand irons tends to be a work out on the right, but it gets heavy and tiring on the long run

Beautiful seams. It's really a art form putting the top layer on after sweating it in ya seams. I been doing alot of SS box valleys lately that gets alot of foot traffic and being able to saulder seams on 90 degree angles and 45 without being able to tilt and spin 10 ft pcs of valleys you can see how much work goes into someone else's sauldering iron techniques. In French quarter we can't have live flames so we're pretty much forced into electric irons and they so easy to break on a roof but it's either that or be like everyone else and caulk it (I refuse)

Could you use 5% silver brazing rods and a turbo torch ?

Open flame torches are notorious for burning down buildings.

@@jcjenkins01 at 13.2°C (56 °F) or below. Tin starts to deteriorate. It transforms to a brittle crystal form that will not hold up. This can take several years and is accelerated as the temperatures drop. I don't know what climate you have where you live, but if it's something like where i live it might become a problem. The lead/tin solder handles this better. Not sure about other lead free soldering tins though as they usualy have a few % silver and other metals in them.

@@neutrino3487 I've found that "pure tin" solder is sometimes alloyed with antimony or other metals in trace amounts (less than .1%) and I'm under the impression that this is done to avoid tin pest/whiskers though I'd love to hear more about this from someone with a metallurgical background

@@jcjenkins01 Ah, thanks for the reply. Looking for something of the sort that is portable and can be brought up on staging etc. with a propane tank but the old johnsons like these are discontinued.
