This video is about soldering with Wolf Soldering Clay, a new product that let's you use malleable clay to hold parts together. It's so amazing to be able to form the clay into the shape you want, press your parts into it and then solder! The clay isn't much of a heat sink, so your solder even flows through it. This is not a heat shield or something to protect stones, etc, from the heat. This is to help you quickly positing pieces and solder them. It should be available at RioGrande.com or contact Kate Wolf in Maine. Presenter: Joe Silvera, Silvera Jewelry School, SilveraJewelrySchool.com

Hi - The right flux varies by the metal you're using. Some metals like platinum alloys, fine silver and argentium need little to no flux. Sterling needs fire coat and flux to protect it from firescale, as do alloys of gold that have copper in them. Research the alloys and which fluxes to use. For repair, I recommend Alan Revere's book on repairing rings. One general mix of flux to use is boric acid and denatured alcohol (50/50) and a liquid flux like Batterns yellow self-pickling or similar. You dip the clean piece to solder in the boric and alcohol mix. Set it on the soldering surface and ignite the flux (be careful not to light up the glass pot with the rest of the alcohol flux! If you do, just smother it with the lid). When the flame goes out it should be coated in boric acid for a fire coat. Then apply your liquid flux, with a brush or bottle with a needle spout, to the join. This will minimize scale and clean up. Happy soldering! Joe

I have a question I want to Solder a heavy ring shank to bezel plate, how can i use this clay to keep the shank down and not moving?

Hi Deborah - Thanks for watching! Normally I would use a third hand with crosslocking tweezers to hold it in place. This clay is great, but it's also a heat sink, so if there's a way to make the heating more efficient that's the way to go. For example, avoid putting clay too close to the joins, since the clay can make it harder to flow the solder. That said, you can experiment with using minimum amounts of clay under the bezel plate to hold it in place, and a couple of balls of clay on the back of the plate, holding the shank upright and in place. You can use super glue or similar, to glue your ring in place and then use the clay to support it. Superglue burns off during soldering but can be useful for temporarily holding parts together. Just be sure to use some ventilation, since the smoke contains traces of cyanide. Let me know how it goes. Joe

You can absolutely reuse it, which is amazing. Just scrape off the crusty burnt edges and mix in a little water if it has dried out.

Can the clay be reused or not

Hi. Yes it can be reused. I remove the little bit of charred surface, and the rest I reconstitute with a little water. Thanks for watching!
