Solid Axle Chevy S10 Build Part 2: Building A Custom Suspension

It’s finally here. Part 2 of my 2001 Chevy S-10 build. This video focuses on the suspension system. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is why I bought a control-arm kit versus building my own. This was primarily due to it being a magazine build. The idea was to showcase that you can use readily available aftermarket parts to support a platform with little to no aftermarket support. Four Wheeler has such a massive and diverse reader base, we wanted to mix up the custom fabrication with off-the-shelf parts to showcase how easily this could be done.

Great build! Awesome truck. I’m building a 97 reg cab on 42’s and trying a 4 link up front. It’s challenging and understand why you chose the 3 link! I can appreciate the time spend on all the custom fab work you have done. I’ve waited a long time for updates on your build. Glad it turned out good for you. Ready to see some action videos!

Love the truck and build. First truck I purchased on my own was an 88 S10 Blazer. I straight axled it on Wagoneer axles and then swapped to full width 1/2 ton stuff and then to 1 tons with 5.38s and 38s. The biggest problem I always had with it was it on leaf springs and too darn tall. I love how low you kept yours.
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 2 года назад
Thank you. I considered leaf springs initially as it would have been a bit easier and more cost effective. It's hard to keep these trucks low with tons, but we worked hard to trim as much as we could to keep it low (and retain a decent amount of up travel).

I saw the first video you did and this build is very intriguing to me. I have 3 S-10 blazers and wanting to build something similar with a couple of them out.

I have two friends (both brothers) that have solid axle S-10 Blazers. They are very cool. The rear wheelwells definitely make it a bit more challenging and important for axle placement.

What’s the wheel base on it? Is it still the stock 122” or whatever it is or did you stretch it?
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 2 года назад
The wheelbase is now 126. We pushed the front forward a little, but didn't move the rear much.

Did you use an astro steering box. I'm taking my 04 ZR5 Crewcab s10 and going daily driver / trail rig. With 35" tires, and a Mercedes om606 diesel swap 4L80E, atlas 2 setup. Dana 44HP in front. Ford 9" out back. 4.56 gearing.
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 2 года назад
The box I am using is from PSC Motorsports. It's similar to an Astro Van box in that it has a forward swinging pitman arm.
@affordabledcgenerators1607
@affordabledcgenerators1607 2 года назад
@@Ali_Mansour_Editor What pitman are you using and does it have enough throw to turn the Super Duty axle full lock to lock?
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 2 года назад
@@affordabledcgenerators1607 It’s been a few years since I worked on this, but if I remember correctly, it’s a Wagoneer Pittman arm that we reamed out to use a one ton tie rod. It’s attached to a forward swing steering gearbox made by PSC. I have no trouble getting full steering out of the axle.

@@Ali_Mansour_Editor Cool, thanks for the info. I have a 2wd S10 that I'm finishing up a TBI 5.7 swap. Next are some axles. It's tough because I don't need tons but it's a lot of money to build anything less then a Super Duty D60 and Sterling 10.5 I will be going though your videos for inspiration!

Not sure what you are asking. Price of the truck or to build the suspension? I stopped keeping track of what I've spent on the truck. If you wanted to pay Low Range 4x4 to build you a suspension like this, you would have to reach out to them for pricing. I don't want to misquote them. Parts alone for the suspension was around 5k if I remember correctly.
