cool truck , but I can't even imagine going through all the trouble of the conversion and not putting them leafs on top of the axles , they look like they would drag on EVERYTHING , cool build , nice job ....

I have tired the thrush chambered in the past and twice they broke in the welds. These are jegs brand I believe, but it's been awhile since I did it, so I can't remember exactly

I've used stock full size truck shocks on my s10 as well as vise versa for years. They even had the same part number. You have the smaller 10 bolt rear end. They make one size bigger with the same ratios so a swap is east if you want a little more insurance, without much more weight. They work pretty good up to about 400 f/p.
@garypease7414
@garypease7414 3 года назад
For future reference, the s10 uses the same shocks as the c1500. So if you lift your truck and cant find a shock for it, use c1500 lift shocks.
@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 3 года назад
Unfortunately for mine it has shock hoops on 1 end and going into a jeep wrangler mount on the straight axle so it's ford superduty shocks for me.

Great video. I got a question. Im planning to do a SAS on my sonoma I plan to run spring under axle just like you did. should I just go with a leaf spring that gives a 6 inch lift instead of a 4 inch? Looks like you had to add a spacer to your front cross member I don’t want to have to do that???
@robertapplegate6046

What is the part number off the front shocks you used
@stevenford5031

Also that front axle on your build it's a Dana 30? How well would you say hold up on your S10? Do you do alot of 4x4 off roaring? I'm trying to decide between Dana 30 which seems to be easier and cheaper to find and the Dana 44
@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 2 года назад
44 is a better choice if your are running over a 35 inch tire, have like 500hp, or race around in 4x4 a lot. I go right through mud holes and deep rutted logging trails regularly and rarely use 4x4. For my use building a strong rear is much more important than the front. But you need to build to your application not mine.

Love the truck and mods! Just picked up a 86 durango can't wait to fix up. What's your thoughts on cummins S10?
@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 2 года назад
Thanks! Cummins swap are cool for sure. In an s10 it would be tough because of the wieght and length. S10s have a short nose. A v8 has almost no room nevermind trying to get a straight 6. There would have to be a lot of suspension and chassis work also to handle the wieght and torque. Definitely would be a huge undertaking but anything is possible with tons money and time.

I got a 1993 blazer s10 LT Tahoe what axles are exchangeable? Thanks 🙏
@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 2 года назад
None are truly interchangeable, but late 80s early 90s wrangler axle are by far the easiest to convert. They are 60 inch wide like the s10 rear axle is, but you need to do some welding and cutting for sure. The 4 cylinder ones have 410 gears too. Also, they go for 100 150 bucks complete usually. Just need to set it up right because they aren't super strong. But neither are s10 ones and people use them all the time. If u watch all my videos I cover most of this stuff

@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 Год назад
95 4cyl because they typically had 410 gears
@stevenford5031
@stevenford5031 6 месяцев назад
Hey man seen that you used dana 30s. I have dana 44s I'm doing this same thing with my s10 I imagine how you did it will work the same with what I have? Also my axles aren't high pinion does that really matter that much? I'm not making a rock crawler or anything just a Daily driver and some light overlanding camping
@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 6 месяцев назад
I'm putting down about 320 hp in this truck with 35s and as long as you don't do burnouts all the time and drive it like a trophy truck it has been fine. 35s are a great size for typical rock clearance, in New England at least, for logging trail driving and regular off reading. Dana44s are a lot more expensive and definitely better. Budget was the only reason I choose mine, but i can also rebuild and heavily modify axles, transmissions, transfer cases, engines, that's what I went to school for and have done since I was a kid. So it's less of a risk for me. High pinions and good, but from your description of application, completely unnecessary. Good luck and don't stress and spend tons. I find work what you have and don't over think it. It has to be a fun experience

@maskedmechanicz2086 2 года назад
A jeep wrangler. Mine are 1995s. I have to beef up the rear thus year before I snap it but so far they have been fine and really cheap and easy to get parts for. They have that same 60 inch width too as the early s10s had
@stevenford5031

I meant like where were you able to buy them did you just happen to know someone with the jeep it did you get them offline? Where I live I'm having a hard time finding any at a junk yard or pick and pull. Appreciate you answering back so quick

Yeah, sometimes that stuff happens when you are looking for something you can't find any. Your best bet is to try car-part.com and give that a good search in your area. You should probably be able to find something within 50miles or so I'm guessing, depending on your choices on the site. Mess around with it and it can be a great resource to locate stuff like that. And it updates pretty regularly so keep an eye out

@maskedmechanicz2086
@maskedmechanicz2086 2 года назад
Well the important part is the gear ratio to match your tire size and hp output. Then u can get it figured out if they would work or u need to rebuild them. That's not overly cheap for any axle

@maskedmechanicz2086 3 года назад
Well the transmission cost the most for me but with the suspension, engine parts I didn't have already and tons of metal work in the realm of 6k. Definitely a very cheap project compared to all my others
