I am a student major in chemistry. In my class some concepts are illustrated ambigiously because the requirement of chemisry and material science could be different, which brings me quite inconveniences in conducting research.This lecture gives an awesome interpretation of some most basic concepts. It usually starts from the very beginning and really gives me a deep understanding on these basic concepts. Thank you so much!

As sir has mentioned that in compound composition is fixed but if we take example of Cementite in which carbon percentage varies from 0.76% to 6.67%.

Cementite (Fe3C) has 6.67% C.

Sir.. Cu & Zn.. According to this lecture form substitutional solid solution.. But in another video where you discussed about Home ruthery rules.. You said Cu and Zn show limited solid solubility.. Which means it is a interstitial solid solution.. So you created a contradiction sir.. I would request you check those once..
@channel-ck8yo
@channel-ck8yo 4 года назад
Its not at all a contradiction. NOT all ,who shows limited solubility, are interstitial . Substitutional solutions also show limited solubility when they are in different lattice structure, ( alpha-Cu in FCC lattice (CCP crystal) and Zn in hexagonal lattice(HCP crystal). Kindly again watch lecture on Home- Ruthery Rules.

What is difference between solid solution and composite material and inter metallic compound...?
@introductiontomaterialsscience
@introductiontomaterialsscience 4 года назад
Solid solution and intermetallic compound are both single phase. Thus a solid solution, although made of more than one elements, has a single crystal structure. One element either substitutes the other element from its sites (substitutional solid solution) or occupies the spaces (voids) between the atoms of the other type (interstitial solid solution). Within the limits of solubility the concentration of solutes can be varied. An intermetallic compound, like a solid solution, has a single crystal structure, but unlike a solid soution its composition is fixed. In a composite material, we have two or more distinct phases: a matrix phase and one or more reinforcement phases. These phases have different compositions and structure.

What is the difference between alloy and solid solution?
@rajeshprasad101
@rajeshprasad101 4 года назад
An alloy is a combination of more than one metal. An alloy can consist of a single phase or many phases. Each phase could be a solid solution or a compound. Thus alpha brass is an alloy of Cu and Ni. it consists of the alpha phase which is FCC substitutional solid solution of Cu and Zn. Mild steel is an alloy of Fe and C. It consists of two phases: ferrite and cementite. Ferrite is BCC interstitial solid solution of C in Fe. Cementite is the compound Fe3C.
