Hi - I'm a lifelong engineer and mixer (came up as a staff engineer at Power Station back in the 70s and 80s, cut my teeth on Neves and SSLs, and have been "in the box" for about ten years now) and just discovered this video as I was looking for reviews of these new SSL controllers. I’ve had a few surfaces but I can say the UF8+UC1 has changed my life, I can track and mix literally with my eyes closed and actually work on the sound, it’s crazy crazy good… The UF8 already dose transport control, just program it in and you’ll get used to it pretty fast…

Yep, you got it right - the combo of the two units is the key. Its a few bucks to lay out for sure, but so worth it if you really want to up your game in your sessions and mixes. You got a like on the last one, and a sub and bell as well on this one. Good stuff!

The Mackie Controller has the transport controls and a dedicated expander as well which makes more sense than a 2nd UF8 with the same controls as the first one. It also has a time display of the song on the top right as well a multiple customizable buttons for anything you want.

fun video ------ ---- Unfortunately you cannot switch out the knobs or faders for other SSL knobs. SSL support says that these are metalized so that they will be touch sensitive.

How do you feel about the Console 1 vs the UC1 with the UF8? I’m debating the two right now, and both seem to have major pros and cons. The UC1 looks nicer, fits with my UF8 better. But the Console 1 has all the plug-in options and UAD integration, which for my workflow seems massive.

Have you tried pairing the Icon Qcon Pro X with the Console 1 controller? (No fader).... I hear it's a beast pairing. Get the full board feel in a controller with the meters but the intricate controls of the console 1 on your plug ins. I'd love to watch you review that gear combo and get your insight on it.

Just got my UC1... bout to put it through the paces, UF8 next! I would love two Uf8's in the setup, though it's not really needed I think it would add an even more console like feel with faders and parameters on both sides of the UC1 for DAW control. Still we need SSL to give us some kind of a flip feature to control the channel output faders within the 360 app with the UF8's faders when mixing in the 360 environment and as you stated a dedicated transport control module maybe even with a master/attention fader and the console would be complete.

Right. They really do need to give us control of the 360 faders. The UC1 is 🔥I would love to afford a second UF8. They did a good job making it feel like a console. I just love how responsive it is.

Awesome video bro, I watched your three vids around comparing SSl and Softube. Im mostly a instrumentalist, composer, producer, I track all my music myself, then mix it nice and steady before sending the stems to my post production engineer. So I think SSL’s alternative would be a bit overkill for me plus Im and Apollo UAD user so the console 1+fader would be the wiser decision in my case. We are all like golum with tiny screens “shiny precious” looks cooler the ssl over the minimalist nordic console 1 but there is also a 1k difference involved. Thanks a lot for your input and hard work, subscribed! Peace brother

i'm with you on this, I too just create, track, program and and prep for someone else to mix and glue it all together, i never do final mixes. As sexy as the SSL UC1 UF8 combo is, if you're not a final 'mix' guy, the Softube combo is probably the better choice for less money, and awesome tone options and workflow.

I am considering buying the UC1 as I am a hands on kind of person and hate using a mouse, which is tedious. Having a well engineered controller to speed up work flow and also it's just a lot more intuitive to use I believe is the way of the future of recording. I may buy the UC1 in the next few days to work with (hopefully work well with) my Studio One DAW (ver. 5) and my Presonus StudioLive 32S digital console... I'll check the video link you posted on how the controllers work with different Plugins/DAWs....Excellent video. Thanks. Phil NYC Area

A transport module must happen but what I would be really excited about would be an expanded transport module or an "editing" module, kinda like what Black magic made with their "DaVinci Speed Editor". Dropping the mouse + keyboard and editing with a jog wheel and dedicated buttons is something I would grab in an instant

TBH, the only bad thing about this unit(And the plugin controller) is the use of USB. I can only imagine a fully loadead transport, UF8 and plugin control setup would look like to your host bus. Also, latency involved in the USB affects a tiny bit your ability to properly ride your faders. overall, im looking forward to it. Moving from a Command 8

@@ZndBornMixedIt Dante maybe, cause using a protocol like EUCON would've alienated a lot of users, since it is property of Avid, as far as I know. I don't know, man. its a tough one. Cause cost is also a great factor, licensing all of these protocols (Dante, EUCON, etc) would've made this product out of reach for a lot o f users. Maybe thunderbolt with a built in USB 3 hub? I honestly can't think of a solution, but I look at my desk and USB hub and with a keyboard, mouse, ilok, kemper, MIDI keyboard, control surface and hard drives, i just cant find a place for another usb device to connect. This cannot be good for my computer LOL

USB and Eucon are different things. USB is a way to connect hardware to your computer, and Eucon (like MCU) is a language used to control a DAW. MCU uses MIDI (typically over USB) and Eucon typically uses Ethernet. Technically, there’s absolutely no issue with USB. We’re on version 3.0, which is absurdly fast - almost as fast as modern thunderbolt. Things like the UF8 actually send very little data - all those control signals are nothing compared with audio data. So your computer is totally fine, and there’s no problem! The big advantage of using Ethernet (like Eucon) is that it can go much longer distances - which is why it’s used for Dante etc - which often need to connect multiple rooms or across huge venues.

@@Cautionary-Tales-Band I’m not really doubting usb speeds. To be fair, my command only lags behind when riding big sessions with high buffer sizes. Really, my biggest concern is bottlenecking the usb host with one too many usb devices connected to a little hub. I’m really wondering why they did not go with Ethernet and its corresponding protocol. Cost? Licensing? It’s seems easier to scale up an Ethernet setup than a USB setup. IE take a MacBook Pro: 1 port is used for charging, 1 for thunderbolt interface, 1 for LaCie hard drive, last one for usb hub with who knows how many devices plugged in looool.

Thank you for all this content, man! It's super solid stuff and very inspiring! I wanted to ask you. I have been looking for a controller system and I have the choice between new Console1/fader or used UC1/UF8 at pretty much the same price. So if they were priced the same which would you choose? A downside of the UC1 is that it appears to only be ablo to control one single plugin (ssl channel/bus), with no way (even from SSL's portfolio) to change the plugin, but at the same time the UF8 can map ANY plugin to the pna-knobs, right? That's very cool and useful! I'm torn.. :/

Odd question. I mainly eq and compress in the box (closed personal studio geared towards me). I don't have a DAW controller fader/mixer and was roling the idea around of the softube combo or UF8. I pulled the trigger and got the UC1 instead of the UF8. I feel like I put the cart before the horse. In your opinion should i have gotten the UF8 instead? Then later down the road got the UF1?

Hey Znd Born, thanks for this great content. Question ... would you say Studio One has the least robust functionality with UF8? Or do Logic, Ableton, S1, PT and Cubase all appear to have equal functionality. I ask because I'm 50/50 even on my Cubase and S1 skills and am trying to decide which to commit to. I do have a UF8. Thanks for any insight - or insight from other subscribers, too.

I'm missing track layouts. I need specific tracks to be in the same fader every time, with just a click of a button for each layout and track spill. I dont like banking to get on tracks. Avid controllers does this for me. Honestly its because of protools control that makes this all work via tablet. but we all know how bad avids support is. When working on analog mixer, the thing that makes it works is the muscle memory, if i can move the faders without having to read what track is it, then its a win, the kick being always in fader 1, or the bass in fader 1 on a different layout. and if by selecting the track UC1 automaticaly goes to that channel, then thats a win over the avid, and now its a true large format mixer like workflow, where you move via muscle memory. So please, I hope ssl implements this.

Hey, nice production and great energy. I own some Ssl stuff. Xdesk, xrack…with eq , dynamics, bus compressor module and a ssl alpha 4 channel pre. I was hoping ssl came out with an affordable controller a few years back but I went with the Avid Dock and S3 the PT Eucon/ control app is second to none for PT control and the dock has a great transport built into it. I was surprised Ssl didn’t have a transport and jog wheel built into the UF8. Nice try SSL but compared to my dock & S3 I’LL pass for now but I loved the direction ssl is moving in …P.S…..Their Nucleus was not an option with what I had already and I could not afford a Matrix.

Totally agree with everything you said... The UF8 are great for Logic/Cubase etc... But with Pro Tools, it's the S1 and AVID control app is second to none! Even without the Dock. People keeps complain about the design of AVID products. I agree, but it really doesn't matter. The UF8 is a HUI controller, enough said... 😄

Depends on what your workflow calls for. Both of them are great options, but I prefer the Console 1 due to its different console emulations and being able to use UAD plug-ins with it.

You mentioned transport module. So until SSL comes out with one of their own, if they do, are you using one of your Faderports in junction with the UF8/UC1 ? If so, how is the workflow ?

I love the faderport with the UF8 and UC1. It scratches that itch. It would be nice though for SSL to develop the transport control, because their hardware is the most responsive that I tried. It would just feel entirely seamless

Hmmmm... It looks great but to me, it doesn't compete with Console 1 because you're locked into the SSL eco-system. If you could control third party plugins like Console 1 can, I'd be all over it.
