All - decent video review. I am a little late to the game watching this, but perhaps if I wasn't so preoccupied problem solving my uf8 id have more time! Anyways, I am so close to selling my uf8 due frustrations and disappointments with an issue I did not see in this video. I have been working with support for months about a jerking fader issue that happens on the uf8. Basically in my DAW I am seeing my corresponding faders at their appropriate levels where I want them etc... as soon as I touch the uf8 channel (by hitting sel. or touching the fader) the uf8 fader jumps to +12. This happens across any/all channels that I touch on the uf8. My levels in my DAW do not change... just the uf8! its so wonky! I have reset up the uf8 several times. I am kinda over the problems. I was so excited to have such a small and robust unit, now I'm considering going back to a bigger desk that just works. It is just not reliable enough for me to be able to depend on it.
Nice vid. I don't understand the problem with the lack of a power switch particularly if it brings the price point down... is it that people just can't get past what they've always known?? SSL if you're listening I'm fine with not having the switch and I have the UF1 and UC1 and will be heading to the UF8 when the shackles have multiplied sufficiently - and so massivebeatzz thanks for your good reviews. Along with a UC1 I’ve got two UF8 units and it really sucks that the plug-in selection on the second unit doesn’t work for the corresponding faders. You can only utilize whatever the plugin selections are corresponding to on the first UF8. Also the 360 bug is absolutely ridiculous. How that escaped the original engineers is beyond comprehension.
I don't have the jerking fader issue at all but I do agree, it's a terrible annoyance that the 360 software always jumps back to the customization page. Ugh!
For all of you who want to know - what's going on with my product improvements - I just emailed SSL: So I am heavily invested in UC1 and UF8. Meaning I gave you a good chunk of money. Like many users, I am a bit concerned about a seemingly lack of updates and added features that were promised and are much needed. Check my videos if you need to. I like to invest my money wisely and took the jump into an untested product ecosystem. So far so good , but.... Tim and I (or You and I) have communicated several times about feature request , fixes and updates. in the past. And so I would like to check in again, and see what new wave of updates and improvements is coming, and when. Also, can I hear a commitment that this is just the beginning of the journey and that you guys will be working your asses off to reward these expensive investments from many a users, to put it boldly. What is SSL planning. Please communicate well with your investment holders. Lastly, what is this brouhaha with "deprecated accounts:, to sign up new, and what not? I got that message shortly after buying a new 2021 product, and that is confusing? I want to see all my products software and hardware registered and trackable and so far I can. I do not want this to change. If you could clarify this for me personally, as well as for my audience in general I would appreciate it,
Spot on ! I must say this is the best video I’ve seen for any product , because it states what the people expect from these high end products . I’d like to take my dollar a little further towards the innovation and future integrity of these controllers . You wouldn’t put money on a dead horse , and as of now I feel that’s what I’ve done .

Good video - nice production values - Interesting points but there is nothing really significant ---------you could turn on a light in your studio - it is interesting however, that the Fusion and Bus+ have the ability to dim the leds - color comment is interesting possibility - you should turn off the UF8 - the dance is nice - 360 issue is trivial - It should have an off switch -
yeah, nothing is a deal breaker for me - but since most of this is firmware updates, I have asked for it :). More LED's and brightness control is something my $54 air humidifier has, so a 1300 remote control should have it all, hehe. They fixed the sleep wake issue (fader jerking) , so we are slowly getting there.
I just got two of these a couple of days ago. I've been working with them for 2 days. Not only do I have the exact same issues you have but my displays are not all the same contrast. That and the complete waste of extra unprogrammable buttons on the 2nd UF8. All you get are some more faders. For the same amount of money. Last night I had to get a small flashlight to see the text on the panel! And yes, why on earth have all those colors tease users and then give them no way to customize them. I'm sending them back. All I would be losing are some faders and displays with 6 character track names. I can to that for a lot cheaper.
I'd also send a support ticket to SSL and let them know why! They are beginning to sleep on their laurels and it's only been less than a year. Gotta hold them accountable. I'm with ya!
@@massivebeatzz Well. I'm a software developer (I did the Alesis Andromeda) so I am fairly confident I would just sound like a whiner! Once I decide not to use something.. it's outa my studio and outa my head!
@@massivebeatzz I've got the ProphetX and the Hydrasynth and the Andromeda still cuts it pretty well! Mine's the one I developed on between 97 and 2000. I'm a bit surprised it still runs! It's got prototype ASICs and prototype PC Boards! Maybe that's why. I'll watch when you do get your hands on one. ! If you purchase one, get the black and white high contrast display from that place in Germany. Made a difference!
With the select, cut and solo buttons all being white (in their 'off' state) it is very annoying that 3 different functions look the same, it is very easy to hit the wrong one. we should be able to have (for example Select in yellow, cut in blue and solo in green - it all looks the same!
same with the automation buttons, we need the instant visual feedback of different colours for each function otherwise we have to slow down and try to read the text so why have illuminated buttons at all if they are all just for decoration in white
I would like to be able to customise with the colours. With ableton I cannot select more than just one solo… in the software this is possible and you can shift multiple solos and will visually light up yellow on the controller but I can’t seem to do it from the controller itself manually….. unless Im missing something?
Thanks for the video , I have 3 comments for you , First all sleep fonction are NOT recommended for a DAW 2th your SSL UF8/UC1 Logic Pro X template link is Dead and 3th when you talk about another video adding a link in that Video is a good idea !
1) To clarify in case you missed it! - we are not referring to DAW sleep. Referring to macOS sleep. Yes, studio MAC PROS go to sleep every few hours. When that happens the faders start jerking every few minutes. Multiply that times 4 years and 365 days and you have a problem. And before you ask, yes Sleep is a modern feature that macOS handles well for the last 10 years (even Ethernet, wake from Ethernet and full USB power stay active). SSL needs to adapt to Apple, not the other way around:). 2) they only last for a while, I'll update it again. 3) I might have linked the wrong video at the end of the video. Going to check and update.
I am having an issue with slider 3. I have only had this unit for a few months and it's not from environmental factors. All the other sliders work fine no issues. I have kept up with the updates, but find this issue to be super strange for a brand new unit.
Well a master fader is a bit problematic, since it's designed to have 2 or 4 of these stacked together like a big surface. But mostly, how would the Daw know which one is the master fader and fix assign to this. I think the Mackie protocol limits this, so it's a limitation on the DAW side and their ability to pin faders.
@@massivebeatzz I guess it depends what you're using. I know with Cubase and Nektar controller integration, Cubase does know which is the master fader.
I never understood the need for a master fader on a controller. I don't touch the master in my DAW - ever. It stays at 0.0, so I don't see the need to have a wasted fader sitting there that doesn't get touched. I mix with group buses and VCA's, so I'd like those reflected more than a master that I'd never use, or accidentally bump (changing my mix unknowingly). I can see the need for a live mix console, but for a DAW controller? There's so many places (and devices) to control the volume in a studio setting.
You mentioned Tim was helpful , his help to me is that of a disgruntled employee at Walmart , seriously ssl needs to get it together it’s been almost a year and no new updates . I have a feeling there isn’t any plan to update these control surfaces .

I have no problem with visability at all. Just look at the video at 1:18. You can see everything perfectly. I can read al the text in the LCD boxes as well. I don't mix in a dark room and I think its pretty dumb to do so. So they have colors at boot up. I don't want the colors being changed. I color code everything in my DAW. Sleep jerking is annoying. I agree with that. Fader jump is calabration. My older Mackie Controller did the same thing. Not a big deal. I agree hitting the 360 button should show the plug in mixer page. Yes it should have a off button. What a stupid thing to exclude.
Visibility isn 't broken, I hope it didn't come across like that. Just not great (for a 1300 dollar controller).To show it where it looked good, (which is what you spotted) I had to turn down the brightness on phone all the way - so at that point it looked better than in real life. So to accommodate every user they should make this adjustable. Easy fix if SSL is committed and keeps improving the product - we're not done yet. Same with colors - I suggest the option for those who want to - easy. But the sleep jerking, and things related to power should definitely take top priority above the somewhat minor crybaby (me) stuff from above.
@@massivebeatzz I too find the sleep jerking very annoying and a rather unnecessary problem which I hope they fix soon but I did find a workaround in the meantime; I quit SSL360 Core in the activity monitor when I'm choosing to sleep my computer, then launch the SSL360 application when I get back to work. Annoying but at least my faders aren't moving around for hours...
some of it has been done, like colors, for example. Others, like power shut down has not been done yet. Also the weird track names and pixelated track graphics hasn't been done. (but has been done for the plugin mixer),
It may have something to do with Mac also. Mind at least keeps suppplying USB power when it is sleeping, which is a good thing in most cases, but could be interfering here with NI. Often SSL's excuse for example is the software or hardware maker.
@@massivebeatzz most of the time my keyboard is under the desk but when taking a break the computer goes to sleep and I can see and be distracted but what looks like the keyboard rebooting itself every 5 minutes. I wonder if it’s the sleep settings. I had a Native instruments rig Kontrol (interface and foot pedal) that would reboot the computer during sleep at the same intervals the keyboard rebooting. I do like the look of this controller though…..that UC1 is beautiful too. I just want to touch it….but I don’t always want an e channel strip
Would you recommend uf8 or nucleus? And is the fader movement noisy? I can't stand the D control, S1, S3 fader noise, driving me crazy. S6 is excellently quiet But too expensive. Have you ever paid attention to the noise it makes when moving. Thanks
I think its very smooth , as long as the automation i snot slamming the faders to 0 or max constantly. Very well done. Definitely better than Nucleus, which is a Frankenstein design and never really worked. I recommend 2 or 3 of the UF8s side by side.
@@massivebeatzz I wonder if it would work in pro tools as long as it’s the first plug in . I’ll have to try that . When inquiring about this to ssl they literally emailed me back with a link to their faqs portal , some help . 2500$ later I’m not impressed . The purpose of me Buying into the ssl eco system Was to break away from The mouse , but I’m realizing more and more that I need the mouse to control the controllers which doesn’t seem as ergonomic as I’d thought . Not really. There are workarounds, such as extending the "sleep time" on the SSL360 software. I made a video about the 1.3 software update, which adds features, but does not fix any of these.
I agree, the use of colors - especially if we could program them for modes or other special uses, would be nice - maybe for channel bank #’s or something along those lines. As for your other dislikes, I either don’t have those issues (running Windows 10), or I really don’t care. What I DO wish to have changed is the navigation capability upgraded so that when I zoom in, the resolution of the wheel (in nav mode) increases, as well. I do a lot of editing, and it would make life so much easier if I could use the controller instead of the mouse (or maybe both) to snip & move items around. I have other requests I have already submitted, but this is my #1 request. I have not had any response, however, or seen any such changes after 9 months. I’m not convinced anyone is actively assigned to this job.
the zooming works for me in Logic, so it may be DAW dependent , although that is SSL's excuse. As for the colors - yes, these are little things, and also little things to implement, and many people ask for it. Why SSL is dragging their heels is something I don't understand. And the shutdown feature? Been working on it for 1.5 years? May need a better set of coders there.
Nearly 1 year later on from this video and sorely disappointed in SSL focusing on releasing new plugins and not fixing known usability issues for existing customers. The UF8 automation labels disappear when faders are flipped in Ableton so it’s completely unusable when I want to record automation via faders. Also no colour coding of tracks on the UF8 so navigating any project is a nightmare. This is made even more problematic when so few characters are displayed from the track name! (Really … no work-around for longer track labels? Didn’t Softube solve that one on Console 1 years ago?). And STILL no native M1. C’mon guys - If you say you support Ableton users, actually do it please. Any idea how frustrating it is to see you focus on launching new software when your existing customers tell you about the software/hardware updates we need and nothing happens!
@@lordwormpie I have only seen one update - maybe shoot them an email. That is a serious concern. Releasing a product and then letting it go - doesn't fly well in 2022.
