Because of predicted Strong Breeze I stayed one extra day in Ballen, giving me the opportunity to explore new surroundings, and when we leave the next day it's very early. Since all goes well during this trip, I must make a decision.

The 4 camera's I use to produce my outdoor footage, are so called PTZ - P(an) T(ilt) Z(oom). Zoom, I only use on the rear camera, when I am underway. As you have seen I use the pan and tilt a lot. And in the dark they produce a great (short view) infrared image. I even can navigate in a marina at night on my cams.
Since they all are so called "IP camera's", each have an unique (hardwired) IP address (no DNS) in my network.

This channel follows a format: "Join Henk-Jan, whilst he cruises on motorvessel Lady Liselot through The Netherlands and a little further". That's it. This automatically means: no boat tour and no boat jobs. These subjects do not fit the format. So, I aim to give you a feel for what life's like aboard for me and hope you enjoy it, perhaps relate to it or maybe even learn something. But it's simply my story and the way I do things. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nederlands.
Waarom ik alles in het Engels doe?
Omdat ik video's kijk van Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers én heel veel Engelstaligen die allemaal Engels lullen en ook bootjesmensen / liveaboards zijn. Want alleen dan kan je je ervaring wereldwijd delen. En wat blijkt? Mijn video's worden in 127 landen bekeken (zie S03/E01 voor de lijst). Veel van mijn kijkers en abonnees zijn Engelstaligen die mijn video's helemaal top vinden, omdat ze óf familie hebben uit Nederland, of hier jaren geleden zijn geboren en door omstandigheden nu elders op de wereld wonen. En, dat ik dan Engels spreek met een accentje (net als de Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers overigens) dan interesseert hen dat helemaal niets.
Oh en dan nog wat. Ik schrijf dit in het Nederlands, omdat vrijwel uitsluitend Nederlanders hier last van hebben, dus als je dit ken lesuh, lees het dan goed door: Deze video is bedoeld als entertainment. Vermaak. Geen "Zo moet het", geen "Ik weet het beter dus je moet deze video kijken," neen, puur vermaak. Dus, als jij tijdens het kijken er iets van vind, en je denkt dat je het beter weet, ga dan niet op een Facebook manier zitten zeiken, maar schrijf een compliment. Ik heb niet uren met dat bootje gevaren, en uren al het filmmateriaal zitten selecteren en zitten plakken, om vervolgens door een zeikstraal de les te worden gelezen. Doe je het wel, dan heb ik als eigenaar van dat kanaal een wonderknopje van RU-vid gekregen: "remove user from channel." Die gebruik ik regelmatig. Donder alsjeblieft op en ga op Facebook je onnoemelijke wijsheid delen of begin een bijbelgroepje en ga daar zitten preken.
Weet je dat Nederlandse ondertiteling aan kan zetten? Doorgaans zo'n 4 uur nadat de video is gepubliceerd. Klik op de video, en kies uit de iconen die rechtsonder verschijnen dan voor [ondertiteling] en kies daar voor Nederlands. Dan wordt zelfs mijn steenkolen Engels (knap he van die jongens en meisjes RU-vid) vertaald naar Nederlandsch.

Henk-Jan, I’m not surprised at the number of folks who recognize you and Lady Liselot. You’re a great ambassador to the sailing community, a humorist, and a light-hearted adventurist who’s well known to the RU-vid community. And Lady Liselot is your ticket to freedom. Yes, it is a small world. As one bachelor to another, it’s great to see you hanging out the laundry, cautiously planning your departure, avoiding bad weather when possible, and riding a similar collapsible bicycle to the one I stow on my traveling machine with wings. Yes it might be 99.4 % men, but just to let you know, my wife also sits and watches you to. I am not allowed to watch by myself my dream is to have a boat myself, and my dreams are wrapped into your journeys. Henk-Jan you are a smart and experienced skipper and driving single engine at and below displacement speeds is just common sense, it‘s all about physics. Only once you exceed displacement speed using two engines makes sense to overcome drag and that of coarse comes at a price!😉

Henk-Jan good evening. I have a single engine on my De alm motor yacht and the 13.8 litre engine 425hp is so great on fuel. This weekend from Drimmelen to Willemstad I was cruising at 8.7 knots( quite fast) and using 26 litres per hour only. Single engine is the best. Next year we are going very similar route to you through the Kiel and Goya canal. Happy yachting.

Thank you Thomas. I too love to rewatch my own vids. Makes me relive the trip again. And yes, I guess most viewers have no idea that they see a change of footage every so many seconds and how much work it is. But from 30+ hours in format 1.0, I now fix it in under 10 hours per week.

Very good decision to go directly to Anholt instead of Greenå. Anholt is such a beautiful island and one can easily stay a couple of days there, even in bad weather. You were lucky to be that late in the season: In high season the harbor is so packed that one can go across from one side to the other without getting feet wet 😂

Before I talked to you as a viewer I checked their website and saw that reservations were advised, so I wrote them an email, and the response was: be welcome, plenty of room. If it was that busy as you describe, I would not have gone. Ballen was busy too as you saw when I left. Many where packed with 4.

Je maakt een denkfout. 2 motoren laten draaien, maar met een snelheid die met 1 motor haalbaar is, dus 7 knots met 2 motoren, rpms lager, dus ook minder verbruik. Bovendien is snelheid en verbruik niet lineair. Een dubbele snelheid heeft een viervoudig verbruik.

Goed punt, maar helaas, minder toeren laten draaien, scheelt niet veel in verbruik. Zeker 1350 rpms brengt het verbruik terug naar 5ltr/motor/uur maar dan is de snelheid te laag. 2x 5 liter brengt niet de snelheid die je dan nodig hebt.

Henk-Jan, I commanded a patrol vessel in and around New Guinea and Northern Australia for a couple of years and I always shut down one engine whenever we were not in tricky pilotage waters. Running on one engine (16 cylinder Paxman Diesels) at 950 RPM consumed 49ltrs P/H ( it might have been gallons as it was so long ago). Trailing one shaft also meant a reduced risk of damaging both propellers should we hit a semi-submerged log/tree at night. Running on one engine gave us about 12 knots and doubled our cruising range (about 6000 gallons in main tanks). I suggest that cruising on one shaft is not only frugal but potentially safer if cruising at night or in poor visibility?

Hey Joseph, I cannot tell if it is safer to run on one engine, I my case I think it’s a waste of money to run both engines when adding only adds 1 to 1,5 knts in speed extra.

Hoi Henk, Dat was weer een gezellige cruise van Ballen naar Anholt met mooi weer en en vrij gladde zee maakte dat een mooie tocht was dat Deense mergpijpje zag er lekker uit maar helaas niet voor mij kan ik niet zo goed tegen tja suiker is een dingetje tegenwoordig ik kijk weer uit naar de volgende episode richting Zweden 👍👍👍👍👍

Henk-Jan. Again, i am looking forward to the episodes when you reach my home town Gothenburg. Every episode leaves a cliff hanger. With such a nice and skillful person you are, why doing the trip alone? Would it not even be greater to do it with a friend or more? My take is, you want it your way, and i am totally fine with that😊

Sometimes people have dreams, but don’t act because of many reasons. One could be: there is no one available to join. To me that’s not a reason not to go, so I go. And besides that, there are not many people that I can handle more than a couple of hours around me (the few ones I love are an exception). Love being on my self.

Oh, do they ever leave a mess. I had to install a fishing line about an inch above my lifelines to discourage them. Disgusting animals around a dock. Moving on past that, have you tried running the same speed with two engines as with one to compare fuel burn? Pretty sure one is better but not by a factor of two.

Yep, 1 engine extra = (2x 12) 24 liter per hour fuel burn. The daily burn stats of this trip proved it again and again.

@@MVLadyLiselot Understand that, my question was if you reduce the rpm to maintain the same speed with both engines running, how would that compare to running just a single engine at the same speed? I assume you would be near 1700 rpm with both engines vs 1950 for just one? Don’t know if that is how diesels work more efficiently, but with gas engines the fuel consumption graph vs rpm is a pretty steep curve when you get closer to hull speed. The boat felt unbalanced trying to push with just one. May be the difference in the higher rpm potential of the gas engines. Even when I puttered around I used both engines.

Single engine running when cruising and not in navigationally constrained waters is a complete no brainer. Engine hours are expensive - and the ‘additional’ load on running engine (compared to twin running) is better for combustion conditions, the wear, tear and fouling will consequently be much less.😀👍⛵️

interesting what you say about two engines. I just inherited an old boat of similar size and age with one engine blown up (reason it got passed on to me!) and I am trying to figure out what to do about it. replace with 2 new is too expensive for me. maybe I just keep running with one. or I tried to find a similar aged buddy. but what you said made me think to may just get a smaller backup engine - I think like they do on nordhavns. but manoeuvring in port with a boat so one sided is a trick! what would you do?

Sell the boat. You will only see me cruising on one engine. Maneuvering with one engine with a two engine boat, is hardly impossible, since the one prop will push the bow to other side and it’s situated way from the center line. Going astern gives the same you-can-not-handle-her situation. Perhaps you can handle her on a calm day, but when the wind starts, you lose the fight. So, what would I do if I did not have the budget to fix (and run the boat later on)? I would sell the boat.
