Solo boating the intracoastal waterway in our 36’ 341 Meridian Sport bridge. The last of my crew departs and I brave the next week or so of this trip from New York to Florida alone on the boat. We are at the half way point on our trek to Cape Coral Florida from upstate New York. In this episode, we hit yet another bad storm and try to make up lost time by opening the throttles up a bit to get on plane so we can reach Osprey Marina before they close and without hitting the infamous Rock pile on the ICW.
Many thanks to my old buddy Ron who showed me around Murrels inlet which is a must visit place to enjoy! Shots of screwball were flowing.

Great series of videos. I'm a boater from Norway and love to see how American boaters spend your days at sea... Here 5-7 feet is impossible with rocks and bedrock everywhere, I hold my breath when you sail in shallow waters😂

That stretch of river where you're talking about the trees growing right up to the edge...it is not salt water or brackish...pure fresh blackwater. All those creeks off the main channel were Socastee Creek, which ended not far past the north side of the bridge. Brackish starts down near Bucksport on king tides. That stretch of river from the Socastee swing bridge to Osprey was my old fishing grounds. I'd set bush hooks in the trees for channel and flathead catfish. Funny story about Osprey...it was a pond back (before the channel was cut and one (big) time fine was paid to the Corps of Engineers) in the day and my grandma caught the largest bass of her life out of there...the hook pulled out as she was landing it and her sister stepped on it to land it.

Yo...don't you know 'close' only counts with horse shoes and grenades [the 'first' I was pretty good at and the 'second' I got scary lucky with...still gives the cold sweats at times when thinking about those moments]. Brian gave me a good 'hint' your first solo day would go just fine! And GREAT you met up with a good friend and tumbled a few Screwball's. Safe travels Captain - be well! Cheers...

This is a great run, done it several times. Calabash, NC has some great pull up restaurants, shout out Oyster Rock! Barefoot landing, NMB has great eating... Greg Norman for the win there.. plus many others at both spots.. and the Anchor Cafe at Grand Dunes MB is pretty decent! Great job Captain navigating the weather! 🙂 The best secret is ... oooo... nah.. msg me for that place lol

Thanks for the tip! If you read the charts closely you’ll notice that soundings in and around the Cape were last made in 1973 or so(excluding marked channels), so much has changed. Many areas are deeper than charted. Many more are shallower. Lol

@@AdventuresofHappyOurs , In that Area tides can only move up n down inches not feet 🐾. Also there's hard bottom ya have to watch out for not just sand.. That area kayaks and flats boats are used.. Stay in the channel and look for dark blue water and go slow..

Armchair analysis on the trees living in the water. I think in brackish water, the salt and fresh water tend to create layers with "fresher" water sticking to the bottom and salt at the top...perhaps that's why they are living. I'm happy to be corrected! :)

Enjoyed the video, glad you squeaked in before closing time. Hope prop OK. Is your boat log something you created or a software program you bought?
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 2 года назад
The log is just an excel spreadsheet ( actually google sheet) that developed along our journey. It started out with only a few columns and by the end of the trip ended up being pages and pages of data, formulas and information from the trip. I will be devoting an entire video on it to explain what I learned from it and some surprises once the trip episodes are completed.

I have a question that may seem silly but- what method do you use to schedule slips. Things change and ya may want to stop early. Is it all on line?…I’m sure you schedule some ahead but what about the last minute overnight stops.
@AdventuresofHappyOurs

Most stops were called in just a day or so prior. Some were same day. I called ahead to most places due to the short timelines but some use Dockwa.

You have done the majority of this trip at 8knts, is that to conserve on fuel? Why not faster?

8 knots is about 7 gallons an hour. 18 knots is close to 40 gallons an hour. So yes. Save fuel costs and less wear and tear on motor and parts.

Are there major disadvantages to traveling along the coast vs the ICW?

Rough seas mostly. Many do travel outside, but with the frequent in-outs needed for refueling and rest stops, the distance is not too different than traveling inside.
