This week’s video is not rainbows and flowers and all the good memories. But a reminder of how important it is to take good care of yourself, especially while being on the road.
What happened - heat + poor breakfast + lack of sleep all added up that day and I put my body into a position when it was not able to function properly. Unfortunately, I developed kind of a habit to test my physical and mental limits all the time and it finally almost backfired on me.
I am proud of how I was able to manage it all and make decisions while being in distress. But there are some things that definitely could have been done better. So here are some reminders for my personal journal:
- Never be on the road without proper breakfast. Don’t have foods that make your body more prone to failures - like coffee in my case.
- Always have a spare 2L reservoir of drinking water - on top of what you think you’ll need.
- Avoid drinking coffee when riding in heat - it will cause more dehydration.
- Plan your rest carefully and don’t push farther than this - even if this is a simple short ride for breakfast.
- Keep your T shirt wet when riding in heat.
All of that might sound obvious. But when things get too much, they can go wrong. Feeling overwhelmed happens to everyone when exploring a new country and sorting things out on the spot. It's easy to judge yourself later, but the truth is, you're just doing your best in each moment.
Taking my BMW R 1250 GS adventure motorcycle to the land of Mexico!
Solo trip, exploring the world.

That was a bit distressing Kseniia. Too many adverse conditions for you today, lack of sleep, ferry ride, no correct food, dehydration, strange surroundings, etc. A very challenging situation for anyone. Very happy that you bounced back quickly. To be alone and sick is terrifying. Please be careful and stay well. 😀😀

Hope you are getting better after your scary morning! It may have been heatstroke you were suffering, not surprising with your hurried start from the boat and the midday heat on the bike. It reminds me of an episode I had which was very real and very scary for me too, a few years ago, when I felt faint, dizzy, weak and my heart was racing fast. Shutting down like you described, like in a tunnel. It was at a stressful moment as I was teaching volunteers on a bridge repair! I collapsed, though I did not go unconscious, but an ambulance was called, and checks made. And I went to hospital. No heart, brain, poison, or any other problem! I had breathed myself to the point of passing out! I was panting, and slowly increasing my CO2 til” i was faint! Breathing too fast, Too much, expelling my oxygen. My instinct was to increase oxygen, thinking I had not enough, but by breathing too quickly, the opposite happened, and I was expelling O2! A couple of hours later I was fine! Here in uk it is called a panic attack. It’s the body that panics! I hope you stay healthy and keep enjoying your journey. Best of luck, respect.

Oh wow. I'm glad you made it to the Hotel. Kseniia, I'm not a doctor, but I've noticed that you worry too much about little things. On the road, that can be very dangerous. As I'm watching your video, I can hear you hyperventilating, for no reason. And of course, you are also probably, dehydrated. You did the right thing by going to the Hotel, instead of going for Breakfast with your friend. That decision probably saved you from an accident. God Bless, and please learn to relax, take deep breath, and stay hydrated. pour water into your upper part of your body. that has worked for me, during high heat and humidity. Safe travel.

Glad you made it okay, I had a similar experience hiking the Arizona Grand Canyon, I decided to hike down, had no breakfast and didn’t drink any water going down but on the way up I ran into trouble, I dehydrated severely, my legs got weak and couldn’t even walk anymore, I was in total distress, my stomach wouldn’t take any food or fluids, would vomit everything and if not for a park ranger that was hiking the canyon I surely would have probably died, he assisted me, stuck around and after about an hour started to pace me back and out, I was young and dumb, didn’t prepare, learned a valuable lesson that I will never forget.

Hi Ksenilia, I am in Mazatlan right now on January 17th so we may have arrived about the same time. You rode past my hotel on the Malecon twice but I can't undertsand why your friend lead you through the golden zone when you are staying in the old city (El Centro). Given the heat we have been having (26-28C) I am not surprised that you experienced heat stroke. Anyway, take care and I hope that your experience in Mazatlan got better. I am a motorcyclist too and am now a new subscriber to your channel. Take care and be safe!

26C is approximately room temperature, about 75F. Not exactly heat stroke temp.
@guderian7795
@guderian7795 5 месяцев назад
@@elgringoec A few things that you are missing. When you factor in 95% humidity, that 26C now feels like 32C. Did you notice that Ksenilia was wearing full riding gear? I was walking along the Malecon and the Golden Zone at the same time that she rode through and stopped outside Las Flores Hotel. I can attest; from actually being there, that is was bloody hot!
@elgringoec
@elgringoec 5 месяцев назад
@@guderian7795 I don't doubt how you felt. Plus I wasn't there and I'm not a doctor. I can't make a determination whether she suffered heat stroke. The best I can do is speculation. For starters, I have my thermostatically controlled heat to shut off at about 26.5C. When I get a fire going I might see 28C. And I know because I have 1" bright red digits at eye level where I have monitors in a high traffic area. I'm also looking at room temp in F at that location and others inside plus humidity, outdoor temps in several locations plus humidity, plus those in multiple temperature and humidity control systems. Because I can. Without counting it's fair to say I have a good couple dozen locations on site monitored. All this to say I have garnered a pretty good feeling for temps and humidity. I also ride and wear gear, and have done so for years, so I have a pretty good feeling for that as well. I've suffered heat stroke myself once and I've seen it happen to others. Now again, I can't diagnose from a distance, and I can't "officially" diagnose in person, so there's no way I can say what was actually happening there. But I have my suspicions. To me it looked more like an anxiety/panic attack episode, perhaps brought on or exacerbated by lack of rest, sustenance, and hydration, combined with the moderate heat, high humidity, and some element of confusion and escalating fear. That's what the signs were but I can't know what's happening to someone else. But by objective standards, it wasn't that "hot" out. The humidity would have one sweating more, which in turn acts to cool the body. Insufficient hydration can then cause lightheadedness and confusion. Fear of something bad happening can lead to increased fear and reduced reasoning. If you watch again you might see that appear to be unfolding. At least that's how I saw it. I've ridden in notably higher temperatures and "feel like" temperatures. I know what it's like to feel overheated and exhausted. It's not pleasant by any means but it is part of the game. But for me, cold is worse and hurts more. Also for me, 26-28C is a little warm but not much warmer than ideal for most activity including riding. I might have to zip down my jacket but I've never complained of excess heat at those temps. Anyway, that's one random person's take. Cheers.

I really like your voice btw. So CUTE! I get those weak feelings sometimes as well. Mine might be related to low blood pressure, which I have had for years. Dr. finally gave me a medicine to raise my blood pressure. Will see how that goes. I think it is the ONLY medicine fir that. So glad you didn't faint! Take care, I live in Pennsylvania now btw, lived in California for 23 years. Best of luck, will be watching for you, and praying for you as well.

Hot weather can be dangerous. 2 years ago when I was travelling Sinaloa & Sonora at the end of July was really hot and once I had to go to visit a doctor and get re-hydrated. Also riding the Sierra Gorda same thing. Since that I force myself to drink water, eat well, rest every 250 o 300 kms. Hope you have a full recovery soon.

Also, what you should have done after you drove of that boat, drive strate to your hotel room instead of following that hombre from Guadalajara. Glad you pulled through this. You probably grew up in a much colder climate. Your body may never be able to handle hot weather as good as the local Mexicans do. Dont push yourself too hard. Get plenty of rest. Most Russians and Eastern Europeans are not used to drinking enough water. I used to be like that too. Just a cup of tea is not enough. Try to keep yourself hydrated all the time in hot weather. It is very important. Best of luck to you.

This is painful to watch! Once serious heat stroke sets in it doesn’t take long before you lose consciousness. Then organs begin to shut down and death comes fairly quickly. What you exposed yourself to is super dangerous. I’m very happy that you’re ok. Frankly, 22:17 you seem woefully unprepared for this kind of trip. On top of that, you’re in one of the most dangerous areas in the world and without local knowledge. I genuinely hope, you carefully plan the rest of the trip and focus on hydration and electrolytes. It hurts to see a fellow rider in this kind of life-threatening predicament.

Everyone watches all these motorcycle videos and thinks they should dress like a rich middle aged doctor biker. I believe in wearing proper gear but if you die of heat stroke what good did it do you??? Dress for the weather and the ride. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a little on one to accomplish the other. It’s 100 degrees and she’s dressed like she’s in the Arctic! She’s a little clueless.

It is always very risky to not plan your trips. This lesson you´ve received confirms that you need much better advise that your not well-construed thoughts. The region of Mexico you´ve entered is unsafe for someone who has no idea what they are exposing themselves to. Don´t intend to be negative, but reality can be an unpleasant face to someone who barely speaks Spanish, doesn´t know about the food, places, people, the perils and has no trustworthy advise. Go back to Baja, Ksenia. If you continue you wil need safety and protection by responsible people. Learn from Lia, the Dutch biker. Best sincere wishes for your safety and well-being.

It is rather ridiculous to what extend people push themselves to promote their living-the-dream-advertisement-self-brochure. Some over dramaticize almost everything, others force push themselves into risky situations or so far beyond their limits just to play the drama in managing it out for cinematic story telling. Sure, many people have health issues, others don‘t but nobody is forced to go that length. So whenever anybody does play this game, you won‘t get me, rather disgust myself. If I had only 30 minutes of healthy operation per day and the rest of the day would be about resting, then that or less is what I‘d do. If I am half-ways healthy and push myself through crazy, I mean crazy heat, ignore to drink and feed the bio-machine with its needs, that‘s my fault, my stupidity, me to blame, only. Things go wrong when beginners try to build a picture of themselves bigger than they are. You haven‘t been pushed by a faster, stronger, better prepared group, that left you behind struggling. You‘re responsible for yourself, pro-actively on a tour, not re-actively, unless you don‘t want to get home safely. „I have 20seconds to faint?“ What? Stop, then, faint, so be it. Next time stop earlier, and final, not 3 minutes earlier, really earlier. This is the same with falling asleep while driving, totally unprofessional attitudes make that happen.
