My father trimmed trees for a living when I was a boy. Hard working man. Climbed mostly. He used a taught line hitch on his “life line” (safety rope). On that rope, he used more turns - three above and two below. This does two things. 1) it increases friction which helps keep the line from slipping, and 2) makes the knot longer which causes the other line to bind more. Using the 3 above and 2 below variation, I’ve never had a taught line hitch slip on me. With that knot, one can always add wraps to make it hold tighter.

Yes! The rake! I do agree, a tarp is so versatile. I like the first of the three configurations. In amongst the trees it offers more protection. Plus the seats offer gear storage off of the ground to keep it dry. I always have a couple 4' x 8' & 10' x 12' tarps on-hand. They are so damned handy. Tarps, a knife, & some 750 and you are set.

The reason your knit slipped is because it was not a taught line hitch. You tied a modified cow hitch instead. A taught line hitch continues around the standing line in the same direction, like two half hitches, or a clove hitch around a rope, with an extra loop to make it function like a prussic hitch.

Outstanding! And more likely than one might think. True story. When I was a boy scout we were on a trip at Percy Quinn State Park in MS when hurricane Juan decided to change course. After my tent came down (Eureka! Timberline II) I spent a nice dry night under the bench of a picnic table. It had to be the bench because the rain was blowing sideways and the only thing I had was a poncho. The bench was the only part narrow enough to allow me to have walls. Good times.

To help with the harsh lighting: make a scrim! Take a white sheet, or tarp, or parachute cloth, put grommets in the corners and tie up high. This will provide shade and knock down the highlights to get better shade detail. It will make editing easier because you won't have to cut out the overblown shots. Commercial scrims are expensive but you already know that.

All I can think of is the old Charley Pride song - "Rain dripping off the brim of my hat, Sure is cold today, Here I am walking down 66, Wish she hadn't done me that way. Good idea. If you didn't have a tent but you had a tarp and you couldn't afford a hotel, you could stay in a campground and camp under the picnic table. Honestly, I'd pony up for a cheap tent but this would work for sure. But think of the bugs under the picnic table in the campground.

I was wondering what would happen if you didn’t have any cooking oil. I found a video showing how to make sunflower oil from sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds are something you would likely have when hiking/camping. Simply grind the whole seed, (you cold use rocks or whatever else you can find) add a 1/2 or full tsp of water and massage the ground seeds with your hands , after not too long you will actually produce sunflower oil that you can use to fry your food.

Ok, I was out tent camping back when I was a teen. Huge storm hits and my tent gets destroyed. So rather than have the most miserable night, I came up with: My camp site came with a picnic table. So I ignored my damaged tent and use the floor of the tent to drape over the picnic table and lashed it to the table legs. While not the cosiest of arrangements, me and my companion were able to get some sleep and stay relatively dry. *My vehicle was 3mi away and I wasn’t familiar enough with the trail to hike back out at night with my inexperienced at hiking GF. (In the morning I was a bit upset to find out that the campsite was only 15 minutes away from a nice dry rest area building 😳🙄🤦‍♂️. That I hadn’t noticed on the way in, but saw right away when leaving.)

I've been enjoying the new varieties of builds. Truth is, not everyone is out 30 miles from civilization. Most folks are trekking or camping through/in National Parks, local woodlands or areas near some sort of human activity. Knowing how to toss up a shelter with discarded items or established facilities is good for the non-great outdoorsman. The people out and about in the bush tend to have the tools to process a fallen tree, build a shelter, and start a fire (except those yobs who go hiking in sandals and a pack on M&Ms). Us run of the mill backpackers can use these tips and tricks as a fall back.

Hey, Bud good job! Try this though, tie your taught line hitch with three or four loops and the locking half hitch going in the same direction, two loops as you tied it is sufficient for natural ropes, manila, sisal, etc. but synthetic cordage is generally slicker and thus requires an extra loop or two for grip. (Just a tip from the world's oldest Cub Scout.)

@sharonmiller6436
@sharonmiller6436 2 года назад
I guess part of raking or sweeping the immediate site would be to check for ant hills and re-locate away from them. If the memory is a good one in spite of the stuff you mentioned try again and just keep improving your camp depending on what you are dealing with. Picking up a mosquito net that covers a bed might work well, you can have ventilation and yet keep the bugs out! We once spent a night in our sailboat (which was not really meant for sleeping in) and didn't think to check the louvers for screening . . . so there we were, sunburned from a day on the water, had another day to travel and no sooner got lying down than the mosquitos took over the cabin - under the sleeping bags we went head and all, and you could hear them beating on the the nylon cover trying to get to us. They finally left at some point then returned at first light (about 4 am when the mist over the water was fantastic) so we started the engine and motored out to the middle of the bay and left them behind. It's a good memory in spite of the mosquitos.

Love to see your upcoming cabin build. Sounds fantastic and exactly what I'd like to do. Make it very secure and also very useful. This setup was a great idea, Shawn. Getting very close to the 1M mark. I hope you can break it down to your 20 minute videos but over a period of time. I think it's exciting to see the progress with details over several videos and not all at once. That's half the fun figuring out the construction, what's next and see it over lots of videos. I hope this is a cabin that you won't have to tear down. Be well and stay safe til the next one.
