When I published my Solo Stove Review video, I did so with the knowledge I had at the time. Since that time I have received quite an education! Thanks to two subscribers I found out where Solo Stoves are actually manufactured, Who Solo Stove "borrowed" the stove design from and Where you can order a nearly identical clone stove for less that $20 including shipping.
This video shares all of the discoveries I made and the journey I took discovering truth about Solo Stove, Bush Buddy and The Ali Express Bon Fire!

My Solo Campfire failed when it was 4 years old (the welds failed and the ash tray dropped). After contacting Solo in the US (I am in the UK) I was offered a replacement at half price. I had to pay import duty on that but still considered to be a fair deal after 4 years. The replacement arrived boxed.....the only mention od "Made in China" was in tiny text on the bottom of the box. I, like many other folk in the UK, do not favour Chinese goods (for the same reasons as you) but I did buy a small Tomshoo wood gas stove and to be fair the quality is good and it works well enough. The Tomshoo cost £15 which, compared to the Solo Lite at £90 is some considerable difference. Yes, before I receive negative comments, I bought the Tomshoo stove more out of curiosity, but I knew what I was buying and I didn't expect much in the way of quality so I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. Would I recommend Solo? At the price they now charge......NO, not now! Your comment on buying American goods made in China unfortunately applies to most items in the UK. Nothing much is made here anymore and it does irk me that we have to have our goods made abroad sometimes at the expense of good quality. I am more than happy to support our well established companies but so many of those companies/stores are now owned by god knows who.

David, first of all thank you for posting this comment! I am certain anyone that reads it will appreciate your experiences and commentary. Like you, I purchased a stove (the Ali-Express) knowing full well it was Chinese made. I did so in the hopes ( I believe they were successful) to inform my viewers as well as myself of the information I received. If anyone feels I am a hypocrite for doing so, so be it. I could not produce the video any other way and feel as though I honored my viewers. I felt an obligation to correct or amend my Solo Stove review video. I am a huge fan of UK made wild camping, bushcrafting, and military surplus products! Unfortunately, shipping costs prevent me purchasing as many items as I desire. I have watched one American Manufacturing Icon after another be purchased by "foreign" investors. I can't think of a single instance that the purchase improved (or even maintained for that matter) the quality of goods nor service. Buy Local, Buy Nationally, and Support Cottage Industries as much as humanly possible. If we all made it a point to do this we would be in a much better place economically and ethically. Thank You Again David! Cheers!

Thank You Gean! Honesty is very important to me. To be honest and to receive honesty. We live in a world of lies and little integrity from the top of our (so-called) leadership to the average person. Thank you for this great review! I'm really glad you read our comments and made a nice review of them!! I also learned something in this video! And now I know where to find the real stove! Personally, I believe that we people in the west should buy as many products as possible that are made in the west. In my view, this ensures that we help each other. However, the world is currently set up in such a way that everything is aimed at making a profit and that is reflected in how you get these products. Despite the fact that I am against tax pressure, I am glad that here in the Netherlands they have chosen to tax products from China, so that it becomes more attractive to order something from the USA or Europe, for example. Thanks again!!

This is a really great expose! Holy cow! Im an emberlit guy all the way anyway so I’m all set but I’m guilty as F because I DO have a solo lite in my camping section of the basement ☹️. I feel like a dupe now. I stopped using my solo stove a couple years ago because tge fire seems to really slow down right before the water boils in the 900 pot which is a mystery to me. The only thing I can figure is some coals get down past the grid and blocking airflow. Second to the emberlit stove would be my firebox nano because of the ease of using my trangia in it if its raining. Thanks again for this video! It was really really helpful. I’ll never use a canister stove and add to the piles of empty canisters in the landfill which us where they end up. Take care man. NQU

I deeply appreciate your comment and from what you wrote, I can tell we are on the same sheet of music on these issues! Have a Fantastic Day!

I was lucky enough to have discovered that Solo Stove straight up stole the Bushbuddy design, as Fritz simply didn’t get a patent on his design. So I bought the Bushbuddy. Honestly though, having now purchased the Solo Stove Titan (as Bushbuddy doesn’t make the bigger size), the Solo Stove is made of higher quality steel… my advice though is to get the Bushbuddy instead of Solo Stove Lite, and the Solo Stoves for bigger versions. (Great video. You clearly are a man of high integrity)

I have the Chinese version of the stove sized in between the too solo knockoff you show here. I’ve examined my $12.00 shipped stove and it’s made well and do it’s job. I only wanted you guys to know that the bushbuddy smaller sized stove is now on the market... yes at Ali express. Convert the centimeters and you’ll see how small it is. It has the “ nicrome” wire bottom as the solo lite with an open bottom. The China version you show is about a dollar cheaper. I’m getting the smaller version just for the novelty of it as I realize it won’t burn as effectively as the slight bigger but still small version.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! The rebranding of products is an ongoing marketing scam in my opinion, and that’s above and beyond low grade manufacturers who steals other people’s designs. I always try to buy local even if it is more expensive, within reason that is. So many turn to China to have there products manufactured for cost savings. All we can hope is for that saving to trickle down to us, the end user. Take care out there✌️

I own the Ali-stove. For the measurements and weight, this one seemed to be very nice for a backpacking/bushcraft tour. Not to big and not to small for some cooking in the forest. Unfortunately the bottom is already done. In other words, cracks between the holes during the fire process made it useless for the optimal airflow because this part is broken. In just a few burns! Perhaps I can place a piece of stainless wire like the ‘original’. Better should be a similair stove made out of 1mm pure titanium and a 2mm stainless groundplate 😎

Recently purchased one of their pots the solo stove 4000. Essentially its basically a 120 oz pot. Considering its size and that it seems a little thin in its walls (havent received it yet) im wondering if anyone has used it extensively and if it warped or bent or any other issues maybe even in their smaller models? Its 304 steel which is trust worthy enough but ive noticed in some pots i own they have warped in some way.

Ben, the wood gasification stoves generate a lot of intense heat! Solo, has decreased their metal gauge since they first started producing there sets. I am fortunate that I purchased mine years ago. My pots are quite robust. If this is a serious concern you might want to search for a similar sized pot of a heavier gauge steel to replace it with, if it exists.

From what i've read Fritz did not patent his design, leaving an open door for others (Solo)to reproduce. Without a doubt handmade in America is well worth the money that being said...no contest between the Bushbuddy compared to the Solo stove. However i'm always open minded to a great deal,if you feel the Bonfire preforms as well as them both at a fraction of the cost...it's something worth looking into. Appreciate your reviews...wishing you tight lines and dry weather in your camping adventures. I've been watching Joe Robinets videos on his canoe outings as he has been using the bushbuddy for years,i've been trying to research there product for awhile in hopes to make a educated purchase...i'd much rather wait 14 weeks for a handcrafted well made product, than a mass produced over priced stove.

Randall, This was a very difficult video to make and a subject to broach. I know I probably could have done a few things differently to clarify my viewpoints and concerns. It is what it is now..... I will be ordering a bushbuddy stove and put it through it's paces just like everything I buy. Eventually there will be a review. I had been sitting on the information I had received for a while. I did the research I felt was pertinent and ordered the stove from Ali-Express. When I had everything I felt was necessary I shot the video. I felt obligated to share all the information I had as soon as I could, however waiting several more months to save for and to order a Bush Buddy was not acceptable. If after watching this someone feels they still want to drop the coin on a Solo Stove, it's on them. Thank you so much for your excellent comment! Blessings my friend!

But... yes this is certainly a fact that the original solostove was a very close copy of the original you describe into your vidéo. And it could be said that solostove company should have compensate the original creator of the design for this. But this being said, the principle of double combustion do not belong to anyone and solostove made many others models of stove, including the recent mesa. The fact that they are made in China is not a secret and i don't think that the company claim otherwise. This is the cas of many products we consume in our daily life.

I won't detract anything I said in my first Solo Stove video. The stove is a great stove. I wish I would have know what I know now before I purchased either of the stoves I did. However, I didn't... I won't stop using a solid piece of kit just because of it's back story that I was ignorant to at the time I purchased it. Enjoy using that stove. Sorry for the delay in commenting, since the channel blew up my two to three comments a day jumped to hundreds. I can't keep up with it. I'd be interested in hearing your ideas. I have a list as long as my arm with things I know I need to do, however i lack the time to implement most of them. As of now it's a struggle to produce any content weekly, let alone quality content. Problem is that Solo stoves version is better than the Bush Buddy.

Chris, I can't wait to find out for myself! I'm ordering a Bush Buddy to compare ALL of them. It appears I opened a can of worms with this video and I will see it through to its completion. It'll just take a little time. The 3 stoves I have all work very well and appear to be well made. Time will tell. I was not pleased with the poor welding of the 900ml Solo Stove cook pot. Especially for the price! Just out of curiosity, do you own both stoves (Solo and Bush Buddy)? Have a great day and thanks for sharing!

@@boonedockery7220 No mate, I have borrowed both stoves though. I am currently using a Honey Stove from backpackinglight.co.uk., although I often take a Trangia burner just in case.

David, a lot of footage was deleted! Believe me, I am very well aware of the reality and the roll the world has played in making China THE Global Manufacturer. When Dave Canterbury first sought manufacturers to produce products for his Pathfinder products, he literally could not find an American company that would produce the number he could afford to purchase. Additionally, even if he could afford to purchase the minimum quantity necessary, the individual purchase price placed it far out of reach for most consumers. I know Dave has received a lot of flak for his decision to use Chinese manufacturers, but he agonized over it for a long time. When the decision was made, he priced the items he sells with a very small profit margin per item. Solo Stove's profit margin has to be enormous if the Ali-Express "Bonfire" stove can be used as a comparison. Folks can criticize and insult me for the method I used and attitude I possessed in the production of this video. I can accept that. However, I had to put the record as strait as I could, as soon as I could so those that view my video can make a factual and well informed decision. I will always be honest based on the facts as I know them and I will always admit I am wrong should facts prove me so. God Bless David!

International patent laws are hard to enforce because most of the time its dozens of (Shell) companies doing it and hard and very costly to enforce. Thats why China gets most of the technology that it does. Do your research and buy what you feel is right for you 💯

I think the video said few things: 1. Chinese company can produce awesome great products for lower price -- agreed and checked 2. Chinese company is capable of doing a better job in terms of manufacturing -- agreed and checked 3. A US company was stealing ideas from another country (Canada) -- agreed and checked 4. A US company used a steal idea (from a Canadian company) and utilized cheaper resources (Chinese labor) to made a product and sell for a premium price -- agreed and checked, smart but sneaky 5. US company should not sell a Chinese product for a premium pricing because it is Chinese made -- Umm?? Sounds iffy but I do not agree~ it is just marketing and etc, and I think it would better to rephrase it in a way that Chinese should definitely sell their made products for a better pricing because they are good qualities!

If I can purchase a Chinese Manufactured copy of the "Bush Buddy" stove from Ali-Express for $10.00 U.S. and Solo Stove is selling Basically the same Chinese Manufactured copy of the "Bush Buddy" stove for $90.00, that tells me that Solo Stove is really "sticking it to" the consumer. Chinese manufacturing is far less expensive due to many factors. Human rights, environmental protection policies, Prevailing Wage, Employee Benefits, Taxation, and Licensing are a few of these factors and as a result U.S. manufacturers (actually most western nations) charge more for a product because it costs much more to manufacture it. The consumer expects to pay higher prices for U.S. made products Not Because They Are Superior, but because it costs more to manufacture anything in the U.S. . The Ali-Express stove has proven that the Chinese Manufactured Stove can be made and sold at a good profit. Hence "The Chinese Made Price". Solo Stove, has priced their Chinese Made Stove at basically the "Bush Buddy" U.S. Manufactured Price. Ultimately, it's the consumer that decides for themselves what a fair price is for them. Knowing how expensive it is to manufacture products in the United States, I felt that Solo Stoves Sale Prices were fair. Because I thought solo Stoves Were Made In Texas. Knowing how much I paid for essentially the same stove from Ali-Express. I now have a good idea of how much the Solo Stove actually cost to manufacture. After seeing Chinese Pricing for the Chinese Manufactured Stove, I feel that Solo Stove's Prices are astronomically high. The only justification for their pricing is because they can get away with it. I don't believe Solo Stoves business practices are ethical or fair. I wanted my viewers to be aware of the information I discovered. I Believe the Ali-Express stove is a fantastic deal and appears to be as well made as the solo stove. "IF" someone is in the market for this type of stove I believe their best investment would be the Ali-Express stove. I know this is long winded, however I hope that addresses the issues concerning my Prices Statements.

@@boonedockery7220 Thanks for your explanation. I am also a fan of burning wood sticks to get heat and cooking, also a consumer in US but able to obtain merchandises from China. I also got the Solo Stove version and the oversea version. I agree that they are both well made. Solo Stove now makes many bigger versions which are hard to get the Chinese versions for. Its high price is indeed too steep but guess part of it is its marketing is pretty successful. But smart consumers would always search for the best deals~ hope others can see our comments! Thanks again for the honest and fair review! Love it hence a subscriber! :)

Now That is a Fantastic Deal for a Solo Stove! Don't get me wrong, I'm not against Chinese products per se. However when I can buy nearly the same thing and an equal quality product for $9.00, $10.00 shipping also from china, not to mention the other issues I mentioned in the video, I personally won't support Solo Stove in the future. I like the stoves I have that I purchased when I believed they were made in Texas. Nothing against the quality. I would say that the laborers that produced the Solo Stove and My $10.00 Ali Express stove earned the same meager wage. I'm not buying it. I will never say anything against anyone that buys anything from Solo. It's all about having an informed decision. I did not buy my Solo Stoves with an informed decision. I'm just putting the info out there, do with it what you will. P.S. The Titan Is The Bomb! You'll Love It!
