This is part two of the solo wilderness camping and ice fishing trip into the Maine Wilderness in the North Maine Woods. Ice fishing for native Maine brook trout, lake whitefish, lake trout, cusk or bourbot, and jigging smelt.
The trip takes a bad turn when the weather rolls in and it goes from fun to dangerous. Catch and cook for native Maine brook trout and cusk.
Jig fishing for brook trout with the Aqua Vu Micro 5.0 pro.
Camping on the ice is great. Deep powdery snow and thick slush is terrible for camping and snowmobiles.

JOE: You are a warrior!! Your experience / vid sent shivers up my spine... Same thing happened to me in the U.P. Was ice camping when snow storm came in. Overpressure from snow forced water up through the holes / flooded shanty with foot or more of water. Took me over 12 hours to get off the lake. White out... My piece of junk sled kept getting mired in slush. Took three trips to get everything out. Sadly, I could not retrieve the shanty. It eventually froze into the ice on the outside. So last year, I purchased a new SkiDo Expedition with 900 Ace / Long & Wide Track. Four Stroke. Been through some crazy shit with that sled and NO getting stuck. Thanks Brother... Keep Safe!

Best, not only ice fishing, but any video I have seen in youtube. You’re dedication to keeping the film going is incredible. Well done. Loved it. Glad you made it out okay. I know it feels awfully lonely once you get stuck middle of nowhere. Keep the sled on a stand or a stump overnight and clear the track by running it for a second while its up was what we always did. Saves a frozen track in the mornin

Wow I did the same thing on my first solo trip, put my foot right through the slush on Rangeley Lake. Got my sled stuck too. Set up camp and dried my stuff with my ti wood stove. Battled and struggled but made it. Excellent snowmobile knowledge, dropping the tow system and packing trail and testing terrain without it and coming back when all set up. Smart for a beginner! 😊❤️🇺🇸☃️❄️🛷⛺️🌄

Just something that might help as long as there's trees around. tree bows work pretty good. To keep your machine back on top the snow, if you end up in a pickle . I stopped for a brook on a powerline, it had flooded i didnt exspect almost 30 extra feet wide . I new it was their but couldn't see it" fresh snow. got off my sled made two steps , fell through the snow. Water below the snow was waist deep. my face level whith the seat of my snowmobile . It. was just floating on snow, made my way to dry land wet cold an buy myself , I layed chrismas tree bows downn in front of the sled an crossed my fingers. It worked an worked good . I dont break trail buy myself anymore. I know if I hadn't done that I would have sunk the snow machine. But as soon as the track grabbed the first bow I felt instant traction. All was good the extra time doing it saved me.. be safe, good video also the bows kept me on top the snow to make my way to my sled whithout punching holes all over making matters worse. but it worked. me an sled made it home to tell aboat it.. be safe out their. Maybe itll help in a slushy situation.

Slush is why I never camp on the ice in those small wilderness lakes. If I can't find a decent spot along the shore, I will put the tent on the ice right next to the shore. I like the access to firewood for the hot tent since I don't like using propane and I can relax, knowink the lake won't come up for a visit while I sleep. Also nice to have a big roaring outdoor fire to cook and warm up by. Glad the weather didn't turn cold suddenly. Your gear may have been frozen there until spring ;)

We use to catch 3-4-5-8lb whitefish up on chamberlain as a kid, which where ur at looks familiar. Use to be able to keep 8 apiece I believe. Nowadays I hear there pretty scarce.

Yeah there seems to be a lot of them under 16 inches in the 12 inch or less range. The new limit is 16 inch on the chain.

Great job keeping a clear head and staying calm! I am very interested in the hitch system you made. Will you be making a video on it by chance?

I’ve only had to resort to eating a illegal fish once it was 10 plus years ago and I still regret it as about two hours later I was off the water and safe but at the time I thought I would be stranded longer so I guess I just got to move on

In deep snow conditions on a lake, it is common for the water to flow out of any ice fishing holes. Fish there once then leave it! The next day good chance of unfishable ice due to slush. Let it freeze by doing loops day before you stop to fish. Try a new spot next day is best.

Gives you a lot of appreciation of the mountain men trappers that trapped in Canada in the 1800’s and spent months alone in the wilderness.

Absolutely. Back when I was tougher I used to trap this area for three months every year. The laws have become crazy restrictive now because of the lawsuits surrounding the lynx population.

Hey Joe! Love the videos! Keep up the great work. I was just curious what do used for a floor in your shack?
@JoeHollandFishing
@JoeHollandFishing 4 года назад
Thank you. I have the heavy white tarp normally and I also put down the black anti fatigue foam mat under my bed . I picked it up cheap at tractor supply and really liked it. It stayed dry and fairly warm.

Thanks! Was hoping to do an overnight before we lose ice for the season. I have a fatfish I was thinking about using a tarp and maybe a couple moving blankets for insulation against the cold. Thanks for getting back to me. Rich

That would definitely Italy work as long as no slush.
