SOLO Winter Camping in Snow - Deep Woods, Cheap Tarp/Big Rock Shelter, Swedish Torch Cooking

I set up camp deep in the woods of northern Pennsylvania with a cheap tarp and some hand me down sleeping bags. I find a big rock to set up camp near, build a quick shelter, and start a fire. I dine on jalapeño cheddar smoked sausages, pine needle tea, bacon, and cowboy coffee. I also make a Swedish Torch to cook with.

This is not camping, this is back-country survival. Real camping: You bring your own water proof shelter, a decent cooking stove and set up in a designated area. This is roughing it and having a good time while doing it.

I like that you don't spend half an hour boasting about all the fancy expensive stuff you bought online. I like what you said in a previous video about using your dad's old North Face sleeping bag!

I really like your style. Really efficient. I did US forest service trail work for the summers between college years and one guy i worked with would only make shelters like you did there. A cheap tarp pitched not with ropes but long branches like you did along with heavy rocks and sticks fashioned into stakes. Thank you for all your work. Take care. NQU

Im planning a " bushcraft" style camp trip similar to this and i love how you used the rock and tree to create the shelter. the way it reflects the heat from the fire back into your shelter is perfect! I always bring some sausage and a small can of beans

So if the planet ends. I would grabe 3 tarps. A sleeping bag, shovel, axe, and cut a hoe handle short, i like your water bottle cotton bottle trick. Ill take note. A knife gun and machete is a must. Now my only issue is why did you not rake oht the snow? Soil holds heat better. Over night that soil is better then the snow under a tarp.

Hey man! I saw that rock and I said to myself that looks like where I hunt for white tail, and snowshoe hare, then after reading your bio in the story I noticed your in northern Pennsylvania and that’s where my hunting camp is! Right in Kane, Pennsylvania. Are you in the Allegheny forest in this video?

guys, it takes a major bonfire HOURS to actually heat up boulders. and once you do, the heat is so intense that you can't get close enough to the boulder to do much good. you'll need one on each side of you. The entire idea is bs. For no more wood than makes sense for you to gather and burn, all big rocks are is heat-sinks, wasting your efforts/time, calories., What you need is a layer of debris between two waterproof membranes, with the edges sealed. The debris just serves to hold-apart the membranes and stops air-movement between them. The trapped air is what insulates you from the cold. The inside membraine gets very little condensation on it from your body moisture when it's not cold and it wont BE cold, due to the insulation effect of the layer of dry debris. This works best in a hammock, with the bottom layer of insulation being under the hammock, so that your body weight does not compress the debris. Hang the hammock just 6" off of the ground, with you in it and kick debris under the membrane, so that air does not flow under you. You will be AMAZED at how much difference this makes, as vs a fire on one side of you, or thin layers of clothing, The wider the layer of trapped air you have, the warmer you will be. You cannot have ANY air leaks, tho, so use a light to look for them and repair them with duct tape.
