Solo Wintertime Overnighter at my Long-term Camp - Camp Firlend

My dog and I take a trip out to our Long-term bushcraft camp, camp Firlend, to do a solo overnighter with bitter cold temperatures dropping to around -17°C. I do lots of camp activities and do some of the viewer suggestions like making a longer handle for the shovel I have, and also make a mallet (I did a separate video on it). I also cook some food that doesn't go to well, and all around enjoy my first time being in the Canadian Wilderness alone for the night. Thank's for viewing, remember to share! It really helps me out.
Want to watch some of my similar videos? This video is in the "Bushcraft & Survival", "Long-term Camp, Camp Firlend Series", and "Camping & Overnighters" under the playlists tab. You'll find lots of similar videos there.

Say Heah Nicholas, Yup, a Arctic Front hit the Ohio Valley. Alot of snow is expected. But last weekend it had us grounded with below Zero° F. cold. But this weekend we're going out and practicing in alot of snow that's predicted and cold weather. Yeah, last November we finished our Perm Shelter close to our cabin. Infact, I brought the same gear with me as last time. My (2) Custom Knives that William Collins made for me, I posted them on my Google Plus. Also I'm bringing my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw with the Crazy Horse Scabbard with a extra aggressive saw blade, Thanx to you. Your the one that got me to get it after watching some of your videos. Thanx You. I'm also bringing my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling, so I can carry it more comfortably. It's a great Axe, just the right size for what I'm planning. Yup, I decided to do a Solo Overnighter. Although we came as a group. I'll pick and choose from what I brought. I really enjoy bunked down in my shelter and knowing how much snow is falling outside, how Kewl is that. I also brought my Carving Set for indoor activities with hot cocoa when we relax indoors with a good cigar. This time I brought some HC Maduro Black's' in the Churchill size. They go great with coffee or cocoa. My new Carving Set consists of my new Spyderco Puukku and my new Flexcut Carving Jack. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

I saw that, cold cold cold. Wish it was that cold here, sadly it's been raining lately. :D Nice to hear you still use that saw, mine still runs good but doesn't cut straight. I may have broke it a bit lol. Man, that sounds amazing though. I wish I had myself a cabin to live out of. Similar to My Self Reliance's! Your kit sounds amazing by the way, I'm in the process of updating mine

Your video came up as a YT recommendation, and I'm glad I clicked on it. Impressed by your video style/editing choices, as well as your camp. I knew I might be on the right track when I saw you carrying a Marlin lever gun. I've got 4 of them in different calibers (no .45-70 though) and they're my preferred rifles for the woods here in the Upper Great Lakes region -- and the perfect firearm companion for bushcraft. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

I like the cloth bags you made for your gear... I did the same thing. i think the sheep skin on your bead moved, than blinked and may have been seen eating steak ... !? you may want to look into that ;)

They're canvas actually :), I'm going to wax them eventually. Aahaha, go back to my first few videos, the dog is literally a sheep, she was huge looking!

Nice hand stitching around the top. Canvas is almost the only thing i sew... and leather of course . I've made a few back packs . well lots of stuff really. Are you sure that's not sheep-Squatch ? watch out for thoughts... I have a Marlin 1894 in stainless & 44 mag... I made a nice buffalo hide sling for it , super comfortable. you hardly know it's on your back. my new 22 has no sling yet... eventually though. I just put out 2 outdoor cooking videos you might be interested in.. disclaimer & warning! I actually speak once and a wile :) look for some thing with "That Fishy thing"in the title. take care Jared

Really cool video. Why don’t you sleep in that little room off to the side. You do have the fire for warmth outside but I would think it would be more comfortable in that little room. Thanks again.
@geographyinaction7814
@geographyinaction7814 6 лет назад
It's considerably warmer in the lean-to, there is a fire, reflective material on the roof and a reflector behind the fire. The room unless it has a source of heat is would be a lot colder than in the lean-to.

why do you sleep in the lean to instead of the warmer wooden tent part?

Sonja Gaffer It's warmer to sleep in the shed area with direct heat from the fire :)

Thanks for subscribing, nice kit in your photo there. I wish I could say but sadly I have no idea, I lost the tag. The bag came from Surplus Herby's.

Hi, just curious. Have you thought about using reflictuix (spelling may be wrong) above and around you to reflect the heat back on you ??? Great video. Happened to stumble upon on it. Have subscribed.

Trying to figure out why you pack in cookware, lamps and tools each time. Pack once and leave them there? If theft is a concern I would build a small cache just outside camp to store them. Also, get a grate to cook steaks on over the fire. Thanks for the video.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 6 лет назад
Theft is exactly why, I don't like to leave anything behind at the camp that has any sort of value to it. That's a great idea, for sure will next spring depending on if the area floods or not :). Also yes I've been looking into that after my horrible attempt at a steak in this video

Hi. Nice basecamp, and nice whether :) we have rain down here :( Why do you do battoning with a knife, and you have such a good axe to split the logs. Easier.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 6 лет назад
Bruno Fernandes Thanks. Sadly it's raining here too now :/. Also I use my knife because that axe is a 3 1/2 pound head on a long handle. It's just easier to use a knife for the small stuff

I guess your girl decided to skip this one ;) I bet the dog wishes he was at home with her :) I like seeing the couples videos. There are plenty of guys doing bushcraft on RU-vid. Guys that have a woman that will stand by their side and help them is pretty rare. Love the videos and thanks for sharing. You have a great eye for videography!

It goes everywhere I go! I'd rather not be mauled by a bear/cougar, or be stomped by a moose, as unlike as that all is.
