You probably won't ever read this, but in chance you do I have to say this : You have no idea that you pretty much saved me in a way. I randomly came across your channel while i was searching for soothing stuff on YT to calm my spontaneous severe IBS flare ups, and for some unknow reason, your videos make me feel so much better. Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.

Can I just say that I'm grateful you pulled the extra wood off the ice? WELL done...leave no trace. Kudos

Tenting in minus 40 Celsius, on a lake! You are an animal! The nighttime view with the chimney shooting out a vertical plume of smoke with the constellation Orion in the background was beautiful. And nothing beats the crunching sound of snow under your feet at - 40.

As a fellow winter camping enthusiast bring a couple foam tiles with you next time to put under your stove. It will reduce the amount of ice that melts and pools that you have to scoop away

Hi John, those holes in the snow are made by Grouse. They do that at night to stay worm. It was -38 here in Algonquin Park that night you hit -40. OMG That's damm cold.

The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤

I love the sound that walking on snow at -25° or so makes. Just as a cup of hot cocoa listening to the wind is more soothing to sleep in than anything else I know of.

I've never winter camped and at this stage don't have this desire. But, I love living vicariously through you Jon. Just being that exposed and close to death conditions is inspiring. You need plenty of trust in your gear and ability to do this sort of thing. It's crazy to think of how the native Americans, Innuits and other northern peoples survived this stuff.

If you’re going to camp overnight on a frozen lake you should place a couple of reflectors outside your tent. A snowmobile travelling at high speed won’t see your tent until it’s too late. I speak from personal experience.

I watched a young man start reeling in a walleye when a huge pike grabbed it, the kid hauled in what he thought was 2 fish but that pike had another freshly swallowed walleye inside it when they cleaned it. He could barely contain himself... Who am I kidding, he didn't contain anything, he was doing the victory dance all night much to the chagrin of both his dad and my husband. Was a good outing.

The holes in the snow are where grouse stayed under the snow to escape the cold. The wing prints are where they flew away. We call them partridge where I live.

I’ve decided to convert my childhood treehouse turned tiny house into a rental space. It needs a lot of work but it’s a step towards a future life in tiny alternative living that I want to pursue. You both motivate me to continue my vanlife, tiny house, off grid way of life and maybe a spinning wheel is just the key! Keep kicking ass and motivating your pack!

Hey Jon, another great video my friend, it's nice that you had some fish action in the tent. Those holes you saw in the snow are most likely from Grouse that come off their roost and burrow under the snow in real cold weather. The temps you had would do it for sure. Thanks for answering all those questions. Always wonder about powering my lights and radio. My first winter camp was a learning experience. I now sleep with my hearing aids, phone and solar radio. Since I am entering the 4th quarter of my life I believe I am going for a longer winter camp either the end of this year or the beginning of next. You and others have really educated me. I never liked the idea of the hot tent on the ice but the easy water and lazy fishing looked fun. You had some hefty multitasking going on with the filming, reading, sonar checking, and fishing. Looked like an amazing time.

Next time drill a couple holes halfway through the ice near the stove. Use those to collect water making it easier to collect and remove. Also gives somewhere for other water pooling to go. You can do this in all 4 corners. It's much easier to bail water from a hole than flat ice.

That was some gorgeous winter weather, despite the -40 C temps. I’m always impressed with your work ethic and dedication to nature.

I camped in the boundary water in -40 x-country ski 7 miles to the lake. Didn't use a tent or a heater. When I woke up the next day the thermometer needle was buried at -45f. I just dug a little cave in a snow drift. I tried fishing but the hole would freeze over instantly. I'm not sure I'd want to do it again.

Man that shot at 24:15 is so cool! The faint trace of the feathers from the wings in the snow is something I've never seen before. That's why you go outside and explore, because you get to see the small but amazing details of nature that most people never get to see

As an Australian who has only once been subjected to -30c in Ottawa, more power to you. -40c is nuts. At the same time, the idea of being in a hot tent with that wind blowing and snow hammering down outside is enticing.

I love the sound very cold snow makes when walked on. We had a couple of nights at -25C in an otherwise mild winter and I could barely stand going out to the porch to get an armload of firewood. Oh to be young, strong and energetic again!

It highlights your videography skills and has an emotive quality that elevates a sense of appreciation for nature. It also makes me want to go on similar adventures! Often people on RU-vid say "cold" camping, but this is legit cold. I am in Winnipeg where it frequently gets -40, and even -50, and you would not catch me solo in that weather. Ice fishing with friends with a cabin nearby, sure, but takes some grit to set all those cameras up. My only critique.. too tired for scotch? Never heard of it. Thanks for the vid.
