Soloing: AAAB Phrases

In this video I discuss and demonstrate a way of phrasing in solos that has its origins in jazz but can also be applied to contemporary playing. Steve Gadd is a prime example of this approach. Repetition in solos is a great way to ensure musicality in your phrasing as it connects your brain to what is being played, rather than playing licks and patterns purely from muscle memory.
Here's the link to "Kamarika" by Steve Khan. Dave Weckl's drum solo is full of AAAB phrases. See if you can pick them out:

Ive always shy'd away from solos. I think it could stem from when i was a youngster learning the drums, my mother would invite anyone who visited to step into my room and have me play something for them. The spot light was on me. While playing in bands, I wanted to be in the background, no spotlights for me.

Change your view on the definition of what a solo is and overcome your fears. Simply think of a conversation where you have something important to say Speak clearly, articulately, and honestly, and then listen to see if you have been heard and understood. If so, congrats, you completed a fantastic (verbal) solo.

@daynelawless thanks for the encouragement! But I don't get the, " listen and see if you've been heard and understood" part.

I’m feel so inspired and privileged to hear this lesson. Your “try to improvise” improvising was pure gold to my ears. Simply beautiful drumming in my opinion. Thank you Darryn! If even a smidge of your sound reaches my hands that will be a good day in my book. 🫡✅✌🏻

Your description of the AAAB is what gets me back on time and back into a grove when I lose it for a bit when soloing. Not a pro here just a life long basement practitioner. Finding that grove when throwing stuff around and running with for a bar or two locks me back in...usually.

I grew up as a rock drummer playing matched grip. My question involves use of the left hand for example At 12::20 you are playing a 3 bar lick using snare; kicl; mounted tom and floor tom. When your right hand accents on the toms your left hand is filling in all the spaces. When I try to do something similar it sounds like RLL RLL RLL and it has a staccato sound. when you play it it sounds like the left hand is doing more than just two Ghost Notes and you make it sound silky smooth and I love that. what can I do to make my left hand act like that when my right hand goes off to play accents on the rest of the drum set to make it sound smooth like that? you've got a new subscriber😁 thanks so much

For me the "secret sauce" is in the dynamics. I generally don't play more than a double in either hand when I'm playing like this so I would suggest that in order to smooth out your sound and have it less staccato, work on getting those double very quiet. Aim for a low rebound height of about 2" or 5cm. Paradiddles are good exercises for this. check out this video that I did which may help ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ah3-vnPWTqU.html&ab_channel=DarrynFarrugia or you can check this out too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NT_0DW-Sko0.html&ab_channel=DarrynFarrugia

Ah I see...if there was more than a double l would notice in the timing even by watching your sticks its like there isnt space to do much more than a double with the left anyway its the dynamics😮 thanks so much for your insight😊 now off to check out that link. Many thanks

Nice flow of ideas Darryn. I love the ones that sound like the time is folding over itself accross bar lines. Like a sharp flintching reflex, our ears hear it as a poke in the RIBS!! Funny ears. Then, like suckers for repeat punishment we ask, now how did that sticking go again? Hehe. Thanks Daz.

Your playing is like you go to a good restaurant and the food is delicious then you try to make it at home and it really sucks. 😅
