It was the end of an era this week with the ESPN First Take announcement that Triple H, really the last of the semi-active names from the Attitude Era, has officially retired from the ring and will never wrestle again. It's been six months since we've gotten any sort of update after his "cardiac event" and he spoke at length this week about suffering from heart failure and how truly close to death he came. Solomonster has all the details, addresses the elephant in the room, talks about what his true legacy will be and runs down some of the best matches of his career.

I was born in 2000 and starting watching around 2005 so my memories of Triple H and what I’ll think of him besides his impact with NXT is being one of the best heels of all time. Triple H and the way he presents himself as The King of Kings, as a kid I kinda saw him and Undertaker as like the “final boss” in WWE and there’s no deny that he looks like a superstar with the iconic music, water, and physique. Health and family comes first and I hope Triple H enjoys his retirement and thank you for all the memories!

I was never a fan of Triple H, but I will give him credit where credit's due. He was a great heel, especially with his feuds with The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin back in the days of the Attitude Era. Even during his "Reign of Terror" and even before the Attitude Era. I think it sucks that Triple H couldn't even retire on his own terms, and given how I didn't hear much about Triple H in the past year, but the heart failure experience really sucks.

Whether you love him or hate him, there's no doubt that Triple H has had an amazing career and was one of the greatest heels ever in the company, I still to this day consider his heel run from August 99 - May 01 to be his best work ever. There was no one more who was more hated and had heat quite like Triple H. He was the perfect guy for the faces to feud with every week and you wanted to see someone kill him, he may not have been the big draw but he was great at working with whoever was the big draw at the time. My favourite Triple H year was 2000 as he put on unbelievable matches and my all time favourite will always be his iron man match against The Rock at Judgment Day. I think the WrestleMaina 38 match would have been against Aj Styes like Solomonster said because Aj wanted it, Triple H probably wanted it and Aj could carry him to a great match still. Unfortunately that is never going to happen now but it’s for the best. Triple H’s best work is what he did for NXT for the past decade really and making that a must see product. The only problem I can say about NXT is it fit the vision of AEW more then WWE and that’s why you see so many in AEW because WWE don’t know what to do with that kind of indie talent. This heart attack has took him out of wrestling and if can only do low stress jobs now that also means he will no longer be running the company in the future which is worrying for the future of the company because I don’t know who else could run it unless they sell it. Best Triple H matches: WrestleMaina 28 vs The Undertaker (Hell In A Cell) WrestleMaina 27 vs The Undertaker (No Holds Bared) SummerSlam 2002 vs Shawn Michaels (Unsanctioned) Royal Rumble 2000 vs Cactus Jack (Street Fight) No Way Out 2001 vs Stone Cold (3 stages of hell) WrestleMaina 20 vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels Raw Is War 2001 with Stone Cold vs Benoit and Jericho WrestleMaina 30 vs Daniel Bryan Vengeance 2005 vs Batista (Hell In A Cell) Judgement Day 2000 vs The Rock (Iron Man)

His peak as a wrestler came from 1999 to May 2001. Was never the same after the first quad tear. When he returned his muscles had muscles, and he'd lost a yard or two of pace that had made him such a great worker. Effectively he peaked at the age of 31.

No matter what you say about the Reign of Terror or his backstage politicking or his role in the Montreal Screwjob, it’s an undeniable fact that Triple H is one of the most important wrestlers and best wrestling heels to ever live. His legacy speaks for itself.

@@Speedyreedy1218 yes but those were meaningless wins. Booker T should've beaten Triple H for for the title at WrestleMania 19, especially because of the racist storyline the 2 we're involved in.
@Speedyreedy1218
@Speedyreedy1218 2 года назад
@@mrlaidback83 Those weren't meaningless wins. They pushed storylines. In early 02, it set up the beginning of the end of HHH/Stephanie's on screen marriage. She came down to "help." HHH sees Christian come down, so saves her. He ends up getting distracted and losing to Booker. Late 02, HBK superkicks him. Booker pins him for the next win. This pushes the HHH/HBK feud, while making Booker look strong at the same time pinning the WHC, right before the Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series PPV. In 03, pinning HHH in the 1st tag match told the story that HHH was wrong, in that someone like Booker could beat him. And him winning the battle royal to face him at WM wasn't a fluke. The 2nd tag match he won was to get a 2nd rematch vs HHH following WM. It showed again, he was worthy of being in the ring with him, just didn't have that bit of "extra something" to take the WHC from him. Which is a foundation point of HHH'S character. His persona isn't motivated by entertaining like Austin, Rock, RVD, or even Booker T with hell-raising gestures, repetitive catchphrases, flashy flips, or dancing. He's a serious, villanious character who stops at nothing to gain or retain the world title. He doesn't care to be liked, and nothing is above the title. He will stop at nothing to keep it. Lying, manipulating, inteference, cheating, blackmail, any and everything is on the table. The WM19 match wasn't racist. HHH never used any racial slurs. People say it was racist solely because HHH was White and Booker was Black. Ric made a comment about Booker being his chauffer. That's applicable to anyone. Evolution's had chauffeurs that were women and men. White and Black. So has Vince. The Rock called Booker's hair nappy a year before and people belly-laughed. Called him Whoopy and everything. King also called Foley's hair nappy in 2000 as well. Commenting on the texture of individuals' hair does not speak for an entire race of people. Michael Cole and other fans trying to spin this into a race angle when it was clearly about elitism and class (HHH, pompous, rich aristocrat; Booker, prideful, but poor, troublesome background) was ridiculous. Nor should Booker have beat him for it. In the real world, the good guys don't always win. Neither should they in wrestling. It was refreshing and not predictable. Plus, the big money was supposed to be HHH losing the title to WCW's biggest star anyway: Goldberg. So every ECW/WCW along the way (Rvd, Steiner, Nash, Booker) were going to be beat to setup the eventual Goldberg match, per Bruce Pritchard. Booker wasn't buried either. He went on to become IC champ months later. Then another tag title run with RVD, and works Randy a bit. Then once he's traded in 04, he becomes a U.S. champ and in a main event title match vs JBL. If he wasn't viewed or trusted well by HHH or management, those things don't happen. A burial would be him losing to HHH in every single match he was in, not booked on TV consistently, curtain jerking all the time, no titles of any kind won.

All of Triple H's matches listed in this video are top tier for sure, but to me his greatest contribution to the business is definitely NXT imho. Besides the attitude and ruthless aggression eras, 2014-2021 NXT from it's 1hr episodes to all the Takeover shows was truly awesome and must see WWE programming for me.

I agree with you about Triple H not having any good matches in recent years, you said his tag team match with Stephanie McMahon against Ronda Rousey and Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 34 in 2018, was his last great match. I loved it, but I thought the match with Batista at WrestleMania 35 should've been his retirement match. Hunter wasn't really wrestling that much anymore after that anyway, and I wasn't really a big fan of his work to be honest but it sucks that it had to end like this. Oh well, at least it's the end of Triple H's career and not the end of his life. Thank goodness !!
