Solomonster remembers Shannon Spurill, the former Daffney Unger from her days in WCW and TNA Wrestling, who tragically took her own life last week. He talks about her openness about her struggles with mental illness, the devastating injuries she suffered in TNA and the suit against the company that very nearly changed the wrestling business and more. There was one Twitter response to Karl Anderson that read: "Karl Anderson couldn't read the room unless he sees a woman, that isn't his wife, in it." Damn! Take that L "Meathead" Anderson. Well deserved!👏🏼

@Tom Edwards The best thing he could have done was to have posted nothing at all. If you have nothing good to say, then say nothing as the saying goes. AEW needs to keep him off social media for his own good....and their own good.

That is truly the sad part of CTE. You are never in your right mind when you have it.
@w33d533d
@w33d533d 3 года назад
yeah, it's not just CTE, or just depression, it was a confluence of problems she was going through, one that a lot of people are overlooking is her physical health conditions, i personally believe this played the biggest factor, some people when they get a terminal illness immediately will kill themself instead of fighting it, i don't know if she had been recently diagnosed with one but it's a possibility, she had thyroid issues which is what caused her to gain so much weight because the thyroid regulates body weight, the thyroid issue is something that most likely had nothing to do with wrestling or wrestling related injuries so she would still be dealing with that if not for everything else. I think my mom did the same thing, the same age too, she got diagnosed with thyroid cancer and died 2 months later but i think she committed suicide by overdose to avoid deteriorating more in front of us. she also gained weight when she used to be a fit woman. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Shannon was diagnosed recently with a terminal illnesses or some quality of life impeding illness. All those things, not being in good health, being in pain and emotionally in pain depressed and not thinking clearly as possible from the concussions is a perfect storm to lead to such a tragedy. It's just speculation on my part about a terminal illness i will stress again, but it's not uncommon, although it is interesting when you think about it, some people just decide to go ahead and end their lives while other people, especially little kids, fight for every second they can get even if it's miserable the whole time.

"Nobody should ever feel so alone." You're right but from personal experience you can be surrounded by people, and yet you feel like you are stranded on an island. It is like a tunnel that you can't see the light at the end of in either direction. Its such a powerful disconnect from reality. It feels awful. I wish she didn't feel like that and I wish she could have gotten the help she deserved. Rest in peace.

Daffney was the original anti-divas before Paige. She is a legend and game changer in wrestling. Daffney is women wrestling periods. She got personality and great in-ring wrestling skills. That modern day women wrestler wish they could have. Daffney was on different levels than most women wrestler today. I give Ruby Soho props for doing a little tribute for Daffney in AEW ALL OUT.

I love her so much, i was always a fan, one of her biggest fans even though i never got to meet her, i always had a crush on her and rooted for her, tragically i didn't realize i loved her as a person until after she died; I followed her career and would still watch if she was wrestling, the last i had seen of her she was married to Steven Richards and seemed happy and wasn't wrestling so there was nothing for me to follow or pursue in regards to her and i kind of went my own way. I have been crying very much so for the last couple days, it's really rough. I love you Shannon, as a person, i liked you as a wrestler Daffney, you don't love and mourn a wrestler, you love and mourn a person.

@Jo Ka lol i'm 100% sure she was married to him in real life because i remember seeing them together out and about on her social media where she posted videos of her cat Schmeez. This really broke my heart. I can’t believe she’s gone. Daffney was gorgeous in so many ways. She was indeed “zombie hot” as Tazz called. A wonderful woman. Meeting her in 2009 was such a joy. She was so friendly and funny as hell. The photo I got with her will be a positive memory and another story of how awesome Shannon was to people. I’ll never forget Daffney. I will miss her very much.🥺 Oh and Karl Anderson can go screw a cactus plant. I saw his dumbass posts. Making Daffney’s passing all about himself and going off like an idiot. I hope he’s really proud of himself, shows his real colours there. A young lady who needed help tragically passes away and he’s making it about him and takes attention away from Daffney. What a piece of human waste.

Frankly the only memories I have of her are a few vignettes she did with David Flair in WCW... I was busy in college at that time, and I never watched the first years of TNA. She was more of a TNA performer than WCW.. I don't know if WWE ever called her or had any tryouts, but she could have fit very well in an angle with Victoria... RIP to her, very sad to see so many young, talented wrestlers ending up like that over the years

a bit of cruel irony i just realized, her finisher was called "the lobotomy" which means brain removal, and she is gonna donate her brain to science which means she's gonna be lobotomized and have her brain removed. Plus, she wore a shirt before that says "I make boys cry" and i have cried now what has happened, and also when she wrestled miss Elizabeth she wore a shirt that said "Liz will die" and she did die shortly after that. Just a few i have noticed recently. The "i make boys cry" shirt is awesome though, it made me laugh, loved her personality she was so funny and quirky and sexy, truly heartbreaking watching her matches back, she was SO tiny and frail, but super captivating and charismatic.

she put on weight because she had a thyroid problem, the thyroid controls your body's weight management, which is super sad because she was super self conscious about how she looked now and didn't like herself, i thought she was still beautiful even when chubby, but she really had no choice in it, diet and exercise wouldn't make her weight go down it just kept going up.

It's good that WWE sent out that text, but I was disappointed that they didn't offer any sort of tribute to Daffney the way they normally do when a wrestler passes (they may have done it on a show but I don't watch Raw). And they manage to honor some of the most obscure wrestlers in my opinion. I could understand not wanting to draw attention to the nature of the death, but I still feel like there should have been something said publicly. Especially if they urged people to get help without explaining why they were suddenly doing that.

Daffney made it clear she didn't want people to blame Rosie Lotta Love for the injury she received during that match and she even admitted it was kind of her own fault, she said it was miscommunication, the boys in the back(bubba ray and al snow) changed the match at the last second where initially Daffney was going to win but the bosses wanted Rosie to go over, so they had to try to scramble to figure out how they were going to figure out the match last minute she said they were literally in the makeup chair going over match strategy how last minute it was which kind of made me laugh imagining that honestly, and they consulted with the bosses several times and couldn't get definitive approval on what they were even supposed to do, in the match itself during the injury Daffney admitted she was supposed to move out of the way of the butt drop and that the other girl was so new to wrestling she didn't know how to "fake it" if it were even suppose to connect. It was a combination of faults that caused that injury, it's not fair to put the blame solely on Rosie especially against Daffney's wishes, i heard other horror stories about Al Snow, he told this other girl wrestler i like, Abadon, that she was too fat and shouldn't be doing flips, she's not too fat she's actually kinda gorgeous under the makeup she wears.

Daffney took a lot of unnecessary risk. I felt so bad for her because she had to be in a lot of pain. She went through tables, thumbtacks, and taking so many nasty bumps. Her TNA run in my opinion was her most brutal run and I think that's where her injuries got really worse. She was just a beautiful woman that was treated badly in end of her wrestling career and she didn't deserve it. No one does. God bless her and her family. I hear nothing but great things about her. May Daffney Rest In Peace. I remember her in TNA during that Abyss feud it sucks so bad hearing what happened to her during and after TNA. Sucks to see her go but she was suffering for a long time and at least now she may be at peace in the afterlife. The fact Karl Anderson’s comments are what’s circulating through the wrestling world instead of the memory of Daffney is sad. Say what you will about WWE, at least they took care of injuries and addictions and mental health issues while you’re there like Jake Atlas, Mike Kanellis, and the various people who have been injured on their watch. That will always be a classy move for them in my opinion that I appreciate, what happened to her in Impact was bullshit. Again, may she Rest In Peace.

Seems to me like she took her life not necessarily due to the depression but due to the fact she seemed to say and believe her brain was deteriorating and degenerating due to her diagnosis while yes being depressed and bipolar amidst all that does not help in any way whatsoever I think the overall new diagnosis and the probable futility she felt after hearing that is why she planned to kill herself and send her brain off to be studied because it's pretty obvious with the video and the wording there it makes it very clear she was planning to do this it wasn't just a sudden "wake up today and I'm gonna shoot myself" no she clearly had plans in place for how it was gonna go and what was to be done with her body afterwards and everything so despite everything you do wish whatever happened to her didn't Though of course I was typing all this to say a point but then I reached the Karl Anderson part of the video and almost completely forgot what I was even gonna say above this part here now I can honestly only think simply "what the fuck" like....beyond everything else about it only one man has managed to pull off being a heel during an actual tragic memorial show stuff and that's MJF because he's a fucking magician but beyond that legit what the fuck was Karl even on about there? What does being a smark and "working ourselves into a shoot" or whatever the fuck have to do with a message saying "hey if you feel like shit here are some resources to help" like what the fuck was he even thinking?

This is an indictment of the last 30 years of the hardcore style and high spots. So many deaths and drug addictions have been the result of these people putting their bodies through Hell for our entertainment. And unfortunately it's only getting worse with the high spots. Thankfully chair shots to the head have been reduced but it's scary to see these guys get hurt and now you have to wonder about the long term effects.

@@KobeLoverTatum Foley has had many physical issues, Sabu has had addiction issues, Abdullah is in a wheelchair amd has hepatitis and gave other wrestlers hepatitis, Jeff Hardy has had several arrests and addiction issues, Eddie Died from the years of abuse from doing pills. Tommy Dreamer has dealt with depression according to him he was going to shoot Paul Heyman live on air at Wrestlemania 17. I probably could name 100 wrestlers who have died or had substance abuse issues. From the last 30 years. I dont have any answers but we shouldnt ignore the effects from these bumps either.

@@KobeLoverTatum actually wrestling used to be.......wrestling with headlocks, take downs, arm locks and grappling not 15 guys doing a tope sucicido on every card.

@Tom Edwards Funks 77 years old dude. which is the point, he’s lived so long. look at a dementia chart. anything under 60 years old is rare to very rare and anyone over 60 is very common. maybe if something happened before this age, like oh i don’t know… about *30 years old*

@@joemixon834 You *could* name 100 wrestlers who have died or had substance abuse issues. However, i could name 10 times the amount of wrestlers who died before they were 40 who wrestled 20-30 years before the attitude era. it’s like you have no basis for your data. sure deaths and abuse is bad, but it’s gotten way better over the years not worse. like the f***?

She didn't need to say "CTE" or "donate my brain to Boston" for people to connect the dots. Every wrestler, every NFL player, every contact sport like MMA, etc., are affected. The fans take no responsibility for any of it. We just cheer like mindless blood-thirsty fans.

She may have be hearing voices which would have let to her Suicide

@w33d533d 3 года назад
i think she probably was having voices/visions but i don't think it made her commit suicide, i have those literally all the time and i'm nothing close to suicidal. she had a lot of problems going on, she was physically sick and mentally depressed and in physical pain, and the concussion damage made it so she wasn't thinking normally. I think the voices and visions she was seeing was just God sending angels to comfort her as best they could.

How can Mick still be going today? after all those chair shots just from the Rock alone he has to have CTE
@w33d533d
@w33d533d 3 года назад
It's honestly not just chair shots. It's gravity. The human brain literally just sits there in a pool of liquid with NOTHING to keep it from sloshing up against the side of one's skull. The force of gravity, inertia, when an object is in motion the velocity increase, during a fall for instance, and a sudden stop, landing for example, the brain keeps moving since nothing is really keeping it in place. any simple back bump even can cause the brain to get jarred against the side of the head.

The bump she took from Abyss and the damage it did is a good example of why inter gender wrestling is a terrible idea

I'm sorry to hear about this news but its seems alot of professional wrestlers or professional athletes have a lot of mental health issues look at Tyler reks he think he is a woman now and its sad

Fine: Making this whole comment section about how Vince ordered Kevin Sullivan to murder Chris Benoit and that mental health problems could never arise in AEW because of how great a guy Tony is. Not fine: Criticizing people who make every single thing in their life about AEW vs WWE. Great Job Solomonster, you really know your death cult.
