In three decades of computer programming, I have used this sort of simple algebra (though not a problem that specifically resembles this one) pretty regularly. Everything on the computer is done symbolically, so it could all be considered algebra in a sense, though using algebraic manipulation of this sort is less common. I have used statistics some, and trigonometry and geometry a few times each. Complex arithmetic has come up once. So you not using anything beyond basic arithmetic is more about your situation than the universal case. However, what is true is that we are all surrounded by technologies and engineering that wouldn't exists without fairly sophisticated mathematics. The modern world as we understand it wouldn't be possible without calculus, for example, even if only a few of us actually solve calculus problems regularly.

@@Golfnut_2099 I feel if you legitimately got this answer correct (or even understand use of mathematics, or it's concepts) you'd understand it's applicability in many subjects you'd use in life "fairly straightforwardly"...

@@kyleyoung7980 I took calculus in high school and again in college. (It was a LONG time ago...) I am an accountant. I work with numbers every day. I cannot remember a time I have had a problem with three variables and having to solve for one of them in terms of the others. Problems with three variables are common in inventory, percent of completion in multi-period construction projects, or depreciation, but having to solve for "x" in terms of the other variables is not something that is common. Instead of insulting someone else, how about providing the applications of this problem in real life.
