If your Champion Dual Fuel generator won't start with propane, no matter what you do, here's the simple solution.
Call Champion to get a new regulator.
(877) 338-0999
They know it's a faulty batch and will send you a new one for free. Mine was backordered a couple weeks, but it showed up.

just a tip that I hope may help. When opening the valve on the tank just barley open the valve at first. If too much gas floods the regulator it may over regulate and not allow gas through. I learned this on a Blackstone grill and ever since then I follow this rule.

Did just as he said. Emailed Champion all my information, even sent photos. Received reply saying they had gotten my request. Received a replacement regulator, installed and tested. What was taking me 5-10minutes to start before is now taking less than a minute. Super happy with this video and the customer support from Champion. Charles, Champion 2250 dual fuel owner

I bought this for my husband because of hurricane IAN. We were out of power for three weeks and we just know got the 2500 Champion Generator. We followed the instructions of all your videos and read 90% of the reviews. He doesn't see why so many people had trouble with the instructions. If I can do it, and he can do it, anyone can. This started right up and ran it through the break-in. No problems in this house with Champion in our house we will be ready for the next storm. You'll hear from us next year. Thank you again. Exactly what I just experienced. In the middle of a multi day power outage, I picked up a 100900, and it would not start on propane. I spent a couple hours trying everything I could find on the internet, which is not an easy thing to do when you have no power. I watched your video, and went to the nearest gas station, got some fresh gas, came home and it started right up. After waiting 5 hours, Champion called me back, and they’re FedExing a new regulator. Meanwhile, our refrigerator is back online, and we are able to charge our devices. Thanks!

Update: Champion sent a new regulator, and that didn’t work, either. The only way I can get it to fire on propane is to place the source selector between gasoline and propane. Maybe this reduces the propane flow sufficiently to allow ignition, like kludging a choke? Sounds like a bad design, but at least it now works.

you have open the propane valve very slowly. If opened too quickly it does exactly that. @@Pics2FlicksDennis

That's interesting that the new regulator didn't solve it. Glad you found a hack that worked in the end though.

This was a very helpful video thank you! I just bought a Champion 2500-Watt (was mfr'd in 10/2021). Could not get it started. So switched out to a brand new propane tank, and it finally started. The generator then started with my used propane tank (only a year old) but was a bit more finicky with that than my brand new propane tank. I still called Champion about my trouble-shooting and they are FedEx-ing me a new regulator to put my mind at ease. That is great customer service, honestly!! I bought this generator to run only propane as it's easier/cleaner for me (I always carry a spare propane tank; I don't want the gas going bad in the generator as I don't use a generator that often; less maintenance for me). Very happy with my purchase. Yes, I've used Honda in the past and they are gas workhorses. But I expect this Champion to be a propane workhorse for me.

Have two Champion 961 dual fuel generators. Both were made in April of this year. Had ridiculous time getting either one to start on propane. Champion told me they had a bad batch of regulators, and they would send me two new ones. Only one was shipped, so they are sending me another one. They won’t start at all with the new regulator. And every time I call their tech support, I have to wait on hold for over an hour.

I found out the "CLICK" is the safety valve sensing a too fast pressure drop like a broken hose would do. The way around that is very slow pressure turn on with the valve. Then the stupid thing doesn't click and still puts out fuel with the "faulty regulator".

I thought the same thing, but couldn't ever get it to work with the original regulator. Started after just a few pulls with the replacement regulator that they sent me for free.
@jimandmandy
@jimandmandy Год назад
Yes, after having a similar problem with a small Weber grill and trying to blame the regulator, it was the safety valve in the tank being too sensitive. I never open the tank valve more than 1/3 turn. More is unnecessary, even with a generator under full load.

I bought my Champion over a year ago, could never get it to start on propane, but did on gas. (mine had that black plastic part, like the one you had first, that didn't start, but the second one didn't) I called them, they sent me a new regulator (didn't have the black plastic piece), and it started right up.

Good info, thanks. I did read the instructions for LPG and it says to pull slowly when "priming" the unit (4 times), then switch to "run" and pull up slowly to get compression, then pull all the way. Kind of reminds me of starting my old motorcycle, you need to compress the gas in the carb to get the best starting outcome. 🙂
@joshualong7517

Definitely a good idea to maximize the chances of starting it. I tried all of the tricks you could think for about 30 minutes and none of them worked. Once I got the new regulator, it started this fast every time.

It shluld be simpler than that in my opinion. My friend's old 1600 generator started easily despite tge fact the oil was not changed a d it was sitting in storage somewhere almost a year. Recoil unit in champion 2500 dual fuel is very low quality because it breaks down so easily. I used so many hours to get this generator to work. See' if you buy Toyota car (any model) how many hours do you have to spend to get the engine started? ... This generator is made in USA just like Ford and Chevrolet which filled up junk yards.

It did not work. Hours wated hoping it starts. Changrd oil' changed recoil unit. Plugged in LO tank with the filter in a vertical position. Nothing helps. I have to tons of patience to get someone from Chimp on the phone and hooefully return it.

Um, by pulling on the recoil starter until you feel the piston come up on the compression stroke, you're not exactly compressing the gas in the carburetor. Might want to re-think or reword that.

I have a different model but if you spray starter fluid into the carburetor that also solves the problem - probably a good idea to just have some (only like 4 bucks) on hand anyway as sometimes you'll run into this problem when you haven't started it in a while.

Problem solved!!! First, mount the regulator so it is vertical, i.e. so the hose comes out of the side. Second, with the gas tank valve open, insert a pin, needle, nail, etc. in the small hole in the center of the second stage for 10 to 15 seconds. This releases the diaphragm and the generator will start up per specifications.

I don't know if this will help someone else. I am breaking a 200961 on propane. I bought it knowing reviews say in can be hard to start on propane. I pull the cord in choke position a few times until I get a sign of life. Then I turn to it's sweet spot on the EZ dial, more than half way to gas. It has started on a few pulls, then I turn to propane position. I think I would pull a long time in the propane position. It performs well so I am not sure the regulator is faulty. Seems there is a bug or flaw in the design that for some it doesn't want to start in the propane position, me included. I really wanted to run exclusively on propane and a Honda with coversion is pricey.

Open up the the regulator very slowly to prevent of inrush gas because the regulator is designed to prevent gas leak. If not, then the the regulator will shut the gas off.

Hello I have a question about using gas or the propane part of the generator can I use only the propane part of it and when I do want to use the gas part of it do I have to let it run dry so that way there is no way of corrosion inside the tank and by using only the propane will that mess up the generator and anyway and how to store it also have you had any problems with that yet

My Champion 2500 dual fuel inverter has a difficulty to start in both LP a d gasoline from the day one. It finally started working but pull starting was not always easy task. The result recoil unit broke down after three months. I called champion customer service several days and had to wait to get live person for 180 minutes i.e. 3 hours with no success. Then I borrowed and used I-power 1600w generator from friend which started fine even though it was sitting in storage for several months. Then finally I succeded to get someone from CS to talk to a out tge problem. It took about four weeks for the recoik unit to arrive. When I installed it the generator will not start on botg propane snd gasoline. That is my journey with Champion 2500 fual fuel inverter generator. Bottom line: do yourself a favor a d do NOT buy Champion generator. Period.

Is there any way to restore them? (I have 3 now and Champion has been great about honoring their warranty, but I only have a couple months left in warranty and each regulator is $50 if you're not in warranty.) Finally, Are there any tips/tricks to helping them continue to function longer? My machine is much higher on hours than most, I am at almost 700 in 2.5 years. This is a great generator!
