If the font is not found in the Fonts registry, try changing your destination to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts In my case the font I wanted to delete was there.
5 years later AND THIS STILL WORKS LIKE A DREAM! Thank you! Also, if you cant find the font under the registry editor, plug this in the bar on your registry editor: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts There was another comment that suggested it, and it does indeed work. Helvetica Neue can burn :)
Dude thank you so much. I spent hours trying to get rid of this until I found your comment. My font wasn't showing in the registry, so I couldn't remove it, but using this address worked. It's freaking Helvetica, but it had installed some crazy outlineversion and it was making tonnes of websites look insane.
I don't normally comment on RU-vid videos but, you don't know how grateful I am for this. The stupid Helvetica Font I downloaded was showing up on random websites as the "default text". I was so frustrated. Thank you so much!
It works until this day! (12-03-21) I had to delete the Helvetica Font because Chrome keeps on using it and I can't barely read it. Thanks, MrJayBusch!
Thank you so much! I had Helvetica Light so i couldnt even see it and for some websites, it used that font and i couldnt read it, really glad to get it deleted.
+MrJayBusch i wish someone could find a fix for that helvetica bug im a designer and i like using the font but impossible to read sites also had to get rid of it
Removing the preview pane worked for me! I had already deleted a font from my fonts folder, but when I tried to delete it from my downloads folder, it wouldn't work. The font was clearly buggy as it caused my Photoshop program to crash so I was concerned about a virus or something. I am so relieved this worked, thank you!
I'm trying to delete 3 fonts that are in a folder in my desktop. I get the same error message but this method does not apply (because they're not in the Fonts folder...) Any help?
I solved my issue by deleting those 3 fonts from my Fonts system folder, restarting the computer and deleting the font files that were "locked" in my desktop (it accepted this time).
I had a similar issue, but I installed the files in another 'Fonts' folder (not the one in the settings) and I solved it by uninstalling the fonts, then dragging/cutting out the font files from their destination and moving them into the Fonts folder in the settings (the one he showed us) and then uninstalling them again using one of the two methods he showed us. That worked for me for all fonts except for one.
If the font is not found in the Fonts registry, try changing your destination to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts In my case the font I wanted to delete was there.
For future references: Newer versions of Windows 10 (Starting from October 2018 update) installs the font locally. Local font registry is available in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts, and font files are found in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. I'm really glad I scrolled down to check the comments, because I was confused as to why the regedit location wasn't working. This seems to be working! Yay! ... well, okay, for the most part. There are some font files that I can see in current Windows 10 Font settings, which is a helpful sorting tool, which do not appear in the current_user font directly listed above. I can find them under local app data but when I attempt to delete from there I get the same issue where it tells me that System using the file and it can't be deleted. Anyone got ideas on this? I'm probably managing to delete 90% of what I want, but, uh... I recently reinstalled Windows and pulled an all nighter to get it set up. Unfortunately, this meant that I did the not terribly bright thing of adding the three different font collection folders I had over about 15yrs of font collecting. I forgot that I apparently never sorted through these fonts and now I'm needing to do that. Because, uh, well, there are several thousand fonts here... *whimper* I will investigate further however, and if I can find the reason why some fonts aren't showing in regedit and how to delete them, I'll come back and add it. Just, figured I would mention that I'm having this issue since the appdata location was mentioned. :)
Your first trick worked, but not at first. After unchecking the details pane, I had to get out of my fonts folder; when I went back in, it worked fine. Thanks for the help!
You are a life saver! I cannot thank you enough. I have been searching diligently for more than a week for this information, specifically for info on how to delete a font that I installed but no longer need. I found the destination for those in the post below mine. Thank you, thank you!!
Thank you , thank you! I had almost 400 fonts to clear out ... and the same stumbling block. You had the only solution on google's first page of results. I wonder what other golden problem-solving nuggets are at your channel....?
going into regedit and deleting Helvetica bold from it fixed the problem thank you so much!! to the impatient people like myself the font may still show up on websites, even after refreshing. if you close your browser and open it again it'll be back to normal!!
If the font is not found in the Fonts registry, try changing your destination to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts In my case the font I wanted to delete was there.
It's already 2022 but this REALLY HELPED me a lot man! THANK YOU!!! I tried researching so many ways to resolve this for months since it was messing with my email view/preview.🙌🏼👍✔
Finally solved the problem with Helvetica - only been 2 years! Great video - thank you! Could use an update to newer control panels but Regedit approach works perfectly.
OMG! That totally worked! I've been dealing with this for over a year. Somehow a weird handwritten font was set as the Arial Black and anything in Chrome used the handwriting font. Thanks so much!
Flawless! I accidentally downloaded the webfont version of my font (or something) and it was cutting my font in half. Thanks to you I was able to delete all the old files and download the correct version. Problem solved!!!
Thank you! I installed this font for some work I was doing, little did I know it would change the font on some websites and its so hard to read! I didnt know why it was doing that, you just fixed it thank you!
Awesome guide. Thanks mate. You saved my life. Couldnt remove a folder for a program (already "uninstalled") since it contained 2 fonts which was in use by the system. Deleted through your guide, then rebooted the computer, then i was able to remove the folder completely. THANKS!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Windows 10 has been a font nightmare. The first trick did work on some fonts that wrecked my reading pleasure, but not all of them. I'll probably be back again at some point, knowing MS, but it's good to know this video's out there. Again, thanks!!!!
Worked for me! head's up - you will get a message implying that deleting fonts will blow up your entire system. No, it won't. (Also, hey, stop deleting Helvetica - it is one of the most brilliant fonts ever. Delete Curlz and Comic Sans, fonts that should be reserved for six year-olds learning to spell.)
Thank you! Downloaded some fonts a while back and this terrible filmstrip font was always my default because it began with an "A." Now it's gone. The nightmare is over. Thanks again!
I had installed a rogue font; one of those "Free" things and it didn't show up in the fonts folder, but it showed as a choice in MS Word; however gave me a "not enough memory" message. I took a chance and followed your regedit instructions, found that little sucker right where you said to look. I deleted the font, ignored the dire warnings and re-booted my computer. All gone and back to normal. Thanks...
Not working for me, unfortunately. Downloaded the file in a RenPy VN and can delete the whole game except the font. Its not installed in Windows, deleted from fonts and regedit, but file is still in use. Any suggestions?
little question, i was usong a different font in win7 and iafter i upgraded the font stayed the same (the custom one ) if i delete the font that im using rn, will it revert back to stock? or will it just totally fuck up?
Hi! I doubt you're still having this issue, but this worked for me! Plug this into the bar up top in the Registry Editor: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
Hello. I think I am the most sick case that can be... I have tried everything. When I open the font folder, the font doesn't appear there... But it is still working in word. When I go to regedit, the font is also not there because I have removed it. However it is still used by word. And when I try to install a new version of the font, it asks me if I want to replace the old one, I click yes... but still nothing. The new font is never installed and the old one is still there.
I'm trying to remove some Google fonts I installed and get the "cannot be deleted because font is in use" error. When I try your method, I only see the pre-installed, standard fonts. Any suggestions?
Pokémon Uranium has a fonts folder which I misplaced and I soon discovered the Fonts folder was Imovable-object-kin. Thankfully thx to regedit (and you :3) I managed to deleate that pesky folder AFTER a restart ^^
THANK YOU OMG . It was causing my facebook to look really wonky so I'm glad I was able to fix it by deleting it. This is what I get for downloading Helvetica willy nilly on the internet . Thanks so much!
. If you highlight a font in control panel, it offers a [ Hide ] [ Show ] option to hide or show that font in applications, if that's all you are after. This registry trick just prevents [ Show ], and future listing in Control panel, but the font stays in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder and may still load at boot, consuming system resources. EXPORT [ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts ] AS BACKUP BEFORE DELETING ANYTHING. Manually, I deleted crap fonts and trimmed my Fonts folder from 800+ to 345. This registry cleanup brought the Fonts Control Panel display down to 29 ... but the folder still has 345 undeletable fonts. I can pop the hard drive out and use it in a USB case to see it and delete stuff via another computer. Does anyone know of a Font Manager that moves fonts to and from C:\Windows\Fonts and C:\Windows\Fonts-un or equivalent? Thanks. .
I'm having a version of this problem, where my difficulty is deleting font files from a thumb drive. Even though the fonts aren't being run from this thumb drive, I am still being told I can't delete the files for the same reason. Any ideas?
Hi MrJayBusch, I downloaded 'Wondershare Filmora' on my laptop and it left the Lato .ttf file in a folder that I am unable to delete even after trying the above solution. As per Norton, this file isn't infected but I have a bad feeling about something I can't delete even after deleting this software. Please help.
You sir are a legend. Thanks. For some reason Windows had decided to use Helvetica Neue italic on almost all websites and emails and now it no longer can! Result.
I have 3 font files on my desktop and I could only find 1 on the Registry editor to delete. However this actually didn't do anything, it still says it can't be deleted because it's open in system
I've erased it in the font folder, but the font file is still shown in my downloads folder and still says it's in use when I try to delete it from the downloads folder
+Koro U I actually have. All that needed to be done was to turn of "preview pane" in the "view" section of your usual folder to permanently delete it without the system stopping the process and telling you that it's in use in another application (Of course, Window Fonts folder may be necessary, but it never deletes the actual font file through and through. You'll have to do that yourself as described previously). Hope this helps!
Omg thank you so much, the details pane worked for me. I had copied the fonts through downloads to the font folder but couldn't delete it from downloads once copied. This did the trick though and i'm no longer scared to download fonts for fear of clogging my download folder:3
Very nice tutorial, now do you know if and how we can change the font NAMES that we installed onto photoshop? I tried to rename it from the folder but when I open up photoshop -> text -> drop down menu fonts it's still in its default name not the renamed...
Totally worked for me! Thank you so much! I've been irritated for a while already since my email and Facebook messenger via web is in Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold ever since I installed the font. It's an eye sore. I was so close to just reformatting my laptop. Haha. Thanks again!
@@Tjoften-rt5ui The solution that worked for me was installing a program called iobit unlocker, and using it's option to forcefully unlock and delete a file. Spent probably five hours trying to delete it, hope this works for you!
