What Dell is hiding very well, is that there is a FET (Field Effect Transistor) coupled to the power supply connector right at the end of the power supply plug (the end that you plug into your computer) This little transistor is manufactured to have the correct voltage and current as is required by your computer. After you use you power supply for long enough and the cord at the end of the plug has been bent hundreds of times, the connection to this small FET breaks and the computer gives you the error message that it will not charge. It has nothing to do with the computer and I am amazed at how many people have done videos and extolled everything but what is really the problem.. Especially DELL!!!! These power supplies are built to break so that you will eventually have to buy a new one. If you don't believe me, cut away all the rubber molding at the end of your power supply plug and you will find the FET with a lead broken!

After nonstop research, switching batteries, switching chargers, switching adapters, literally banging the damn thing on the floor to see if it would snap back working, watching any video available pertaining to this issue, taking every1 i watched advice, & still failing..... Come to find out all i had to do was something as simple as this to get my Dell able to accept charges again 😂 i dont know whether i should be mad at Dell for making a model like this or mad at myself for bein a dofus not figuring it out sooner, but ill tell ya what? i love you forever for this man. So glad you uploaded a video like this & ironically how i found you thru the dreaded youtube recommended list. Finally the youtube algorithm recommends something useful for once.

This was the solution to my problem. I thought it was the battery for a long time and tried a lot of related fixes, but this actually worked! What a crappy computer brand. I'll never buy a Dell again and neither should you. They're nothing special and this kind of problem is so easy to cause after a few years of moderate use.

For older Dell (and other laptops too) there was a trick that often worked... Power off. Remove the battery. Power up. Once running, re-insert the battery. This allows the laptop to "See" a new item present (the battery) and away it goes... (obviously this doesn't work for actual hardware issues, only typical software/firmware confusion issues.)

WONDERFUL POST! Knowing how it's supposed to work is key to troubleshooting. I found that my center wire was missing thus no charge. Used small needle to probe receptacle hole to make sure wire was not broken off inside. Must be more careful plugging and unplugging. Now choice is to order a new charger or try to remanufacture old plug with new center wire (probably monel) using marine tex epoxy putty. One will be easy and quick but cost money. The other will be cheap but what a challenge. I am 75 and grew up filing a $2.80 set of points in car (in or out of a rain storm) to save money. Today who can file a 500 dollar computer to make your auto go. Good luck to me!

I don't believe it!! It worked. I plugged in my new charger after replacing the port and received plugged in, not charging message. Then plugged the power cord out from the port. Then reinserted faster and it started charging again. Wtf, it makes no sense, but Thanks!! It works now again.

My newish (3yrs old) laptop was plugged in using an old style dell charger with a dongle adapter. Thought I was good but It still wouldn't charge. I even almost bought a new battery. It never occurred to me that it could be the charger. Thanks to you I figured it out and now its charging again. Thank you.

I also read in PC magazine the battery sensor may need to be reset. To do this, unplug from wall and laptop. Remove battery. Plug in power cord and turn on laptop....this is supposed to reboot battery sensor. Power off and remove power cord. Put battery back onto laptop. The problem should be fixed. The PC Magazine resolution worked for me.

Got the same message on my wife's Dell. Did all the driver tricks suggested as well as the power button procedure suggested by others to no avail. The charger tested good for the nominal 19 volts DC but there is that center pin mentioned in this video. That center pin is where a third wire has connection between the Dell and it's power supply. In our case the center 3rd wire had no connection because it was a broken connection right at the molded power supply plug. I was going to by a new Dell laptop for my own use but not now. I want a laptop that uses a 2 wire, not a 3 wire charger. I've used Dells for years but this makes me question why there is so many failures where you have to use the Dell 3 wire charger.

My battery appears to be charging now. Thank you. I was down to 0% so when I unplugged it the computer crashed and then when I plugged it in it was back to normal, but I pulled it out a little and now it is slowly going up in percent charge. The light on the right side of the laptop is not flickering yellow but is solid white. When I plugged it in, i just pulled it out a little. This is the last Dell, not just because of the design flaw, but because they just wanted to change out the battery.

For me, this video identified DC plug insertion timing (and the flimsy/cheap DC jack design) as the real root cause of this Dell charging issue. This has led me to a work around to charge my Dell. What happened to me is that I tripped over my power cord plugged into my Dell (if you do this a couple times, the flimsy design at the DC jack will eventually weaken - for everybody). The jack then loosens and you can't tighten it with the flimsy screw that strips. The result is that when you insert the DC plug into the Dell, the jack moves and the connection takes to long to meet the time allotted by Dell for insertion -- it won't ever recognize the adapter and won't charge, no matter what you try (i.e., not a BIOS update, new battery, new AC adapter, etc.). The solution is to secure the jack again to the board so it won't move. In the mean time, you can continue to re-insert and hope to meet the short insertion time window, but the trick is, when you do re-insert again you need to wait a few seconds before you re-insert again. I've learned how to do this and it works. Then I leave it plugged-in overnight to re-charge my battery to 100% again. When I have time I'll disassemble and secure the jack to the board. Dell needs to fortify the flimsy/cheap jack design (flimsy/cheap isn't what I'm used to from Dell). Thank you Computer Services for the video.

After trying multitude of things, including breaking down the laptop to get to the power supply connector in this video, I finally got it to work because I did break down the laptop. When I powered back up, the fans ran at full speed and it did not boot. This was somewhat expected because I had previously replaced the keyboard and it took a while for the first boot. But this time, it did not boot. However, now the battery appeared to be charging because I unplugged the adapter and the fans were still running - previously the battery was completely depleted. So, I unplugged the battery and booted again. This time, it booted up. I shut it back down, plugged in the battery and booted again. The battery was charging! The only thing I can figure is unplugging the MB battery and all the cables had something to do with it resetting. I had already done the Dell recommendations - unplug the battery, leave it 3 hours, plug it back in, let it charge for 24 hours, update drivers, update BIOS, etc. etc. Nothing worked. Taking it all apart and putting it back together worked. So can only guess it got reset. Also, previously the BIOS was reporting wrong power supply and it no longer does that either - and that was probably the whole reason it wasn't charging. But not sure what caused it to realize it was the "right" power supply. Very strange.

Hey! Amazing video, it was well explained and worked for me :D But i discovered a slightly different thing: i plugged in but no charging, so, i tried to plug in and rotate the connector (like tunning an old radio or so lol) and voilà! It started charging. I think that in my case what helped is the friction of contacts, cleaned it later with contact cleaner and worked without doing rotating or doing dome friction; and although it seemed clean before, it was kind of dark, now it seems shiny and bright.

Dell has a problem with its software or rather in their testing department. Dell default enables an optimized battery charging setting, change this setting to 'standard'. A reboot might be necessary. That did the trick for me, it's charging fine again. Luckily I was in the last day of my warranty so the tech employee could help me out free of charge.

This is a good video. The Dell built in barrel connector is TOO delicate for everyday use. I have an XPS 15 9570 with this exact problem. Fortunately, the Dell engineers put a USB-C port close to the barrel connector that WILL charge the laptop! You should buy the Dell 130w ($81) charger WITH USC-C plug. Use it and you are good to go. I use it every day. If anybody finds an adaptor that converts female barrel port to male USB-C, that should work also. and Cheaper. I have not yet found that solution.

@@vedantsawant8857 Demand that it gets fixed under warranty, at no cost to you; or get a full refund. is yours a Dell, too? This trick on the video works intermittently. I spoke too soon and am now having charging problems again. I'm beginning to suspect that manufacturers and or Microsoft updates are behind this. It drives people to buy new products, when they shouldn't have to. Remember the Iphone 6 battery issue? Apple didn't say a word about it, until they were sued by the geeks, who could prove that their Iphones were intentionally slowed down after software updates.

Many thanks. Your video solved my problem, but from the opposite side. In my case with a Dell Latitude 5300, it turns out that by VERY SLOWLY inserting the plug into the jack, the battery can now charge. I assume this is just due to the fault in the charging jack yielding in some cases a quick insert will make the connection, and in some cases a slow insert will work. That is unsure, but what is sure is I will not be buying Dell anymore. This problem happened almost exactly after my 1 year warranty expired. I used to buy 1 or 2 Dells for my workplace each year. Had a problem with a desktop Dell PC power supply as well this year. Again, just a bit over 1 year after purchase. Bought a replacement power supply from the OEM in China and it worked out, but... My relationship with Dell is over. Get your power supply problems fixed. This is basic quality control for basic tech and you're not doing it, Dell. Shame.

My 1525 says "0% available (plugged in)". However, it's not charging. The battery light at the front left of the laptop is not lit suggesting something is not working properly. I've tried rotating the connector and inserting slowly and quickly. I'm using a HP PSU (90W): Is this the possible cause of the charging problem? 90W should be more than enough to charge this laptop. The PSU connector has a central wire same as the original. Laptops aren't usually this fussy about PSU's. Tried - turning off the laptop, - disconnecting the power supply, - removing the battery - starting the laptop - inserting the battery This didn't work. N.B. Until the battery was inserted the laptop battery indicator showed 255% charged. Don't want to buy a new PSU only to find it doesn't fix the problem. A lot of aftermarket PSU's say they are replacements for the 1525 PSU do they include the FET that is found in the original adapter? Not able to check if the battery is OK due to the charging problem. Assuming that a battery that is no longer holding much charge wouldn't be causing this problem. Very impressed that such an old laptop works so well with Win10: SSD made the laptop fast enough to be usable. 4 GB of memory also helps... but it was running OK with 2 GB. I'm fixing this up for a friend in Africa and don't want to spend too much on it... but the battery is important for him as power outages are common and power quality is poor. Lots of useful suggestions below. Thanks 🙂

Mmm, I have the same problem, exactly the same. But my fix is to simply unplug and then plug it in again. I tried doing it super slowly, but I couldn't reproduce the error like you did. Still, good video.

Like you his method did not work. But I found this solution and it worked. Turn off power to laptop and unplug from laptop. Remove battery. Plug in power cord and turn on laptop. This should reboot the battery sensor. Turn off power to laptop and unplug. Put battery back on laptop. Power on laptop and plug in power cord. It should start charging....I was very surprised to have it working again after days if struggling. Good luck .

Yo! just wanted to say thanks for your video! I've actually gone through TWO regular chargers, an expensive USB-C charger AND a WD15 Dock (even more expensive) to get around this issue... This trick works for me 100% of the time with the regular charger. So weird!
