2023 Director's Cut with new pics and new footage.
In 2003, The Beatles released a now-out-of-print bonus disc of rehearsals from the Get Back sessions. It featured an excerpt of an abandoned song titled "Paul's Piano Piece". But historians have long regarded this piano piece as a cover version of Samuel Barber's iconic "Adagio For Strings". Tell us what you think.

Being a classical music fan, this makes me love Paul even more. And I really didn't think that was possible. The thing about Paul was that he had the most uncanny ear for music growing up. Listening to and _absorbing_ everything, then taking what he'd soaked up and creating his miraculous oeuvre.

I was brought up on classical music from the age of 8,1960. At 10, i began to self teach guitar. I tried to learn a piece of Bach played by Andre's Segovia " ,Segovia plays Bach". In a interview by Michael Parkingson, he explained how he came up with "Blackbird ". It was the same piece that I'd learned in the early 60s.

He was on to something very beautiful with this piece. It sound s"somewhat" like the Adadio, but that bit of coutnerpoint to me reflects bach or handel more than Barber. Too bad he didn't develop it a bit more.

Paul is a musical genius, and John was a lyrical genius, even though they crossed over at times and inspired each other. During this piano session, Paul also plays Golden Slumbers, and it really demonstrates the great gifts Paul has as a musician and songwriter. George is also brilliant, but he worked hard at it while it just came more naturally to Paul and John. Ringo is often totally underrated as a drummer. They all came together at the perfect time and gave us some of the greatest music of the 20th century; I feel lucky to have been alive at that time.
@rabukan5842
@rabukan5842 Год назад
@@dean4482 I grew up with Lennon and know all his music. I perform his music more than all the others. I didn’t say he didn’t write beautiful music, but he could not sit down at a piano and play like Paul could, and Paul was much more prolific musically, was interested in Bach, etc. John was more creative with words, and even he said his musical ability was limited. But he had a unique way of phrasing his compositions that makes him unique, and Martin enjoyed working on Lennon’s songs most because there was a lot more for him to play with. Paul’s songs we’re almost always already fully conceived and close to finished.
@rabukan5842
@rabukan5842 Год назад
@@dean4482 this is true. Moonlight Sonata. But Beethoven wrote that, and John took Beethoven’s piece and ran with it. I never said John wasn’t brilliant or a great songwriter. John constantly took ideas from others, like Mr. Kite coming from a carnival poster, or Come Together directly from Chuck Berry’s song You Can’t Catch Me. Of course, it was Paul who told John to slow it down and change the bass line so they wouldn’t get sued. None of that detracts from John’s brilliance, or from what I wrote.

You have to be in awe of Sir Paul. I love the Stones about as much as The Beatles but if you take the individual aa around talents of Keith, or Mick, it doesn't come within a country mile of McCartney. It's no knock on them they are great, but it's a fact.
@rabukan5842
@rabukan5842 8 месяцев назад
@@vernpascal1531 Yes, I too think Paul is really a major song writing talent with no real competition. But I also think his greatest work was with The Beatles because of the influences of his band mates and George Martin, who also had their own unique and special gifts that happened to come in full force at the exact right time.

A gem in musical writing is when you can identify the complete song in the very first 3 to 6 notes that were composed in an original and precise sequence My pleasure of playing the piano by ear for the past 55 years made me understand the genius simplicity of Paul music. The following examples is how I can make my point hoping this makes sense to the reader ,,, Ex: Fool on the Hill Day___afterday 1____2 3 4 Ex: Yesterday Yes___ terday 1____ 2 3 What Paul was playing in this video was more of mumbling exercise of notes to eventually come out whit something valuable. But this is just my say…

I think that the relationship between Lennon and McCartney reached an almost magical level of symbiosis, and the commercial demands to which they were tied was what suffocated them... in the Get Back videos, they looked exhausted, wanting to recover that magical relationship, but it was too late, they both created together with Harrison a very great work. It's hard for me to decide who was better than the other. On the one hand Lennon was innovative and quite raw in his lines while McCartney was more melodic and refined. Harrison was not given the time or the space until he was a soloist to prove it, but he managed to give true jewels to the quartet's catalogue. That is my point of view.✌️🌼🌻✨

Thanks for sharing this exploration. There are many examples of McCartney writing passages which he acknowledges are attempts to emulate a classical style or specific composer. Penny Lane"s high trumpet solo and obligato is a well-known one (JS Bach) and the keyboard breaks on several Help! and Rubber Soul tracks also. Having classically trained producer George Martin around to advise was also influential.

He played entirely by ear and composed the same way. George Martin had to transcribe everything the Beatles wrote. I like Paul for his music and the ease with which he composed his songs, quite a talent, but comparing him to Barber, an actual classically trained composer, is insulting to Barber. Richard Carpenter, Keith Emerson, Nick Hopkins, Ray Manzarek etc were also classically trained composers who wrote pop songs. They would be far better able to compose a sonata or etude or something similar to Adagio for Strings.

Similar mood--sure--many piece have a similar melancholy mood; it's common in classical music--one of the reasons I love it. However, the actual notes of the piece bear no resemblance to Adagio for Strings. When I first heard this idea put forward, all I could think was that people don't listen very well. The melodies and harmonies of the two pieces are entirely different.

Nicely done. I don't really hear this McCartney piece as a copy of Barber's "Adagio for Strings." Yes, there is a transition from one chord to another that's the same and is therefore somewhat reminiscent for a measure or so, and as pointed out the mood is similar. But for me that's where the similarity ends. If copying a musical piece is defined as moving from one chord degree to another particular chord degree--and that transition also happens to have been made in some other piece--then all songs are copies of some other song because all those movements have been made before--countless times. Instead, this is an original piece that sounds at times like it could have been written by a number of different classical composers.
