👉 Learn how to solve literal equations. A literal equation is an equation where the unknown values are represented by variables. To solve a literal equation means to make one of the variables the subject of the formula. To do this, we use the simple algebraic process of undoing all the algebraic operations related to the variable we want to solve for.

I think the reason why some people don't get your explanation, is that you needed to tell them at the end that you have to multiply one of the variable with the value we found. For example: 3 (5 - 4/3 y) + 4y =15

I'm in geometry, I tried to watch this to help solve a system of equations to get the angle measurements of 2 supposedly congruent triangles and to prove their congruency. I forgot the basics of how to solve a x+y equation ;u; I dont even know how I passed algebra 1 without remembering that

Hi Brian this is very helpful. I am in an MAT World Language Education program in FL and while I have Aced all of my classes and passed all of the Subject Area Tests (Spanish, French, Italian) the Math General Knowledge Test is kicking my butt. I am going to be a High School Language teacher yet Florida's Math component forces you to know so much Higher Math that they might as well throw in a Math Certificate as well..thanks Brian..BD

How does it help to "solve" for a variable (x) in terms of another variable (y)? Isn't the goal to get the variables to equal some known quantity? At the end of your equations, both variables are still unknown.

if yall want to get the solutions you can always make y=0 to solve for x, and vice versa make x=0 to solve for y. since it is a two- variable equation its solution is two pairs of coordinates where a pair must always have a 0 for y or a 0 for the x in the two points the line touches the y and x axis.

why are you trying to graph that? the video is on solving for y. You can graph it but would not be very accurate with graph paper and better to use graphing technology

Hello, professor Brian and everyone Can I ask a question? If 2x + 2y = 10 wouldn't x = 2 and y = 3? because 2(2) + 2(3) would equal to 10 right? since 2x = 2(x) and 2y = 2(y) if x = 2 and y = 3 it would equal to 2(2) + 2(3) = 10?

my daughter is given a lot of computer work with no explanations behind wrong or right. would you use this same formula if we’re solving for x and y when we are told y is double x? i gathered 80=2(4y) + 4x bc it’s 4 of each shape that equals to 80
