@@MursAlison commercial hosts basically operate their own rental car company with their own contracts, insurance llc- hosts with an LLC are just normal hosts that have an LLC that their revenue goes through, cars can still be under the LLC bur they aren’t operating under the commercial program
Thanks Aubrey for the great report. I noticed in the New Jersey Market that 900 cars were added in one day I've been wondering how that would be possible and now I see it surely was a commercial host which flooded the market and brought prices way down. Happy to see them off the platform now to give us peer-to-peer folks a fair Shake!
I've been reviewing the number of cars in my area after turo removed commercial hosts from the app. I have seen zero decrease in the number of cars since March 15th. Does that mean every single commercial host agreed to join turo and pay a higher Revenue share? If so the average price of a rental shouldn't be $51 which is what they're charging since they have almost no Revenue share contribution. It should be more up to $75 something just doesn't compute here 🤦

you only need full coverage on cars with a loan. You can carry liability if there is no loan; The car is only on your insurance when its in your possession.
Thank you! I don't talk about insurance a lot on the channel as I feel it tows the lines of legal advice which is a realm I don't feel comfortable getting into-- but, what Matthew Thomason said is right! You need at least the minimum that is required in your state in TX that is just liability.
One thing that bothers me as a host is that they can cancel a reservation up to 24 hrs before rent and when they do that it leaves my vehicle not rented What do you do to help with that? Can Turo rent trailers ?
As someone who's been renting from Hertz and Avis for YEARS I can't wait to experience my first Turo rental on our upcoming trip to Kauai. Renting from those other places has ranged everywhere from super easy to absolute nightmare. Dynamic pricing is great when your company is paying the bill, but it's absolutely TERRIBLE when traveling myself. We were almost ready to give up renting in Kauai ($150 a day and up for a shit car) when I decided to try Turo. We landed a great car for less than 1/2 the above rate and it's getting delivered to the resort! Epic!
@@AubreyJanik For those that might be curious... We got a 2020 Honda Fit with unlimited miles for just under $600 for 6 days! That might sound average to some, but to get a car delivered to the resort and dropped off at the airport IN KAUAI is AMAZING! Plus, the renter has HUNDREDS of positively reviewed trips!
@@AubreyJanik Just got back from Kauai and are TOTALLY SOLD on using Turo! New customers should just do their due diligence and choose an owner with plenty of good reviews and I'm sure the experience will be similar. We had the car delivered right to the resort the morning AFTER we arrived on a "redeye" from the Midwest. No schlepping all our kit to the rental car line at 230am after traveling for 15+ hours? Valuable! Having the owner retrieve the car the night before we fly home so we don't have to fuss with returning a car at 5:15 am BEFORE a 19+ hour travel day? PRICELESS! We will ALWAYS be checking Turo for our FIRST option when renting a vehicle.
Not sure if this was noted in the video or not, but another change is a pretty big deal if you don't plan ahead. Turo hosts can no longer conduct business on airport grounds. Seriously. This literally went into effect DURING our first rental but our host stepped in like a boss and offered to come to get the car from wherever we were staying at no additional charge. To be honest... This actually worked out to our benefit. It was SO NICE to not fuss with returning a rental at 5am before a 19-hour travel day. We simply Ubered from our lodging and were dropped of right at the front door with nothing to do but board our plane. This has the stink of some cab drivers union all over it, but it won't effect us at all because we learned the "trial by fire" way! If we're ever staying far away from our hosts' drop-off point we will simply choose a location before the trip begins, meet the Host there to pick up \ drop off the car, and Uber on from \ to the airport. I can't possibly understate how amazing it is to NOT deal with the rental counter at the airport! AMAZE-BALLS!
Turo's customer service left me stranded five hundred miles from my house. I called them to get a jumpstart that never showed up. They kept losing my request in their computer. Anyway, after four hours, I called an Uber and went to the AutoZone and bought a battery to install in the truck so I could finish my business trip. Horrible service, they've given me five "how did we do" surveys, and they haven't even acknowledged it. Pathetic. It was the worst rental experience of my life!
Wow, I am sorry to hear that! Contact their customer service line directly and make sure to NOT contact roadside (roadside is sometimes not Turo but is a 3rd party service provider) --- or alternatively contact them via their chat feature on their site - Turo typically takes these things very seriously and you should for sure let them know if your poor experience. You should be reimbursed for your bad trip as well as the battery.

If the commercial hosting is eliminated, it would probably mean changes to the 90% insurance plan. As I'm under the impression that that's the one they use as standard affair. Optional on the peer to peer side.
the commercial was a bit more than 90% - it wasn't the standard 90% that they used. I think there is still value to the 90% plan because they force hosts with too many claims to get on that plan.
I am curious to understand how to make an LLC and remain peer to peer? I am trying to do this to help with reducing my taxes but I still want to be able to drive my cars as my personal vehicles to work and for pleasure.

The Turo app is janky ah. It rarely works seamlessly for me when I use it. It hangs, it crashes, it fails to update. I am a renter, but I am also an entrepreneur, so I am curious. I hope they fix the app and tighten up a few things with the way the claims are handled.
That's a good question! We will see how many cars get delisted on Turo once this change goes into effect - I would imagine there are probably more than we think
I can understand why TURO choose to end the commercial host program. Because of places like New York, who don't want to keep up with the time and keep away any competition that threatens their pockets. I did not want to start up a commercial rental car company with all the unnecessary fees and have to pay high commercial, fleet insurance. Just to price myself out of business. It wouldn't have made sense.
I’m happy the commercial platform is going away. They flooded the Maui market and we’re forcing personal hosts to compete. It was incredibly frustrating.
Aubrey, I still don't fully understand what a commercial host is. If a host has commercial insurance but still uses a 90 plan would that be a commercial host?
No, it is different - My advise is if you don't know what a commercial host is than you're not a commercial host as it is a different process than signing up for a normal account. If you are still unsure about your exact plan, I would contact Turo to be sure

Side note, vehicle #6 is a used Ford Focus - mainly because of your videos. I've always bought new but finally trying a used vehicle. 2nd side note - race plans this year (70.3 or 140.6 in the cards)?

So the main difference is you use Turo for their marketing but that’s it- so you can’t use them at all for insurance, customer support, you can also do your own fee structure. So it’s basically a booking tool and nothing else. Not this year! I will probably do a 140.6 next year and am currently training for a 100 mile ultra!

I thought I read they were changing the algorithm for matching guests with cars; something about possibly connecting newer cars with guests first. Am I mistaken on having read something to that nature?
I’ve heard from other hosts they “feel” like newer and more expensive cars are favored by the algorithm. Turo gets a larger cut for renting more expensive cars so it aligns with their own interests. Of course this gets overridden as soon as you start applying custom filters, price limits, or sorting; but never underestimate the influence of defaults.
Never watched the video but I wouldn't use Turo. No backing from anyone but the host. If that fails you are on your own. I was burned just a few weeks ago in Florida. Pass.
@@namlevine7568 rented the car. Had the app. Doors wouldn’t unlock. Sat there for an hour. Contacted the renter who tried to no avail. Contacted turo directly and no luck either. Then I was told to contact roadside assistance. Uh no. After two hours I went back into the airport and got stuck with leftovers.
I can smell a trouble guest who wants free service, I have drop and pick up fee but asking me drop off close to airport and not charge a fee, if he still books and pay the fee then he will write a awefull comment.
This is all about sales tax and they're being stupid about it commercial hosts should charge sales and rental car tax people renting personal cars shouldn't. If however you are a commercial customer with rental cars you don't have to pay sales tax when you buy a car and you can depreciate it.
@@AubreyJanik Yeah maybe keep in mind Turo is a tax time bomb they are telling the revenue departments they are representing individuals sharing their personal cars and are thus exempt from sales tax. A rental car company must remit sales and rental car tax. Turo hosts are calling themselves rental car companies and I absolutely guarantee you a state revenue department will send turo wan probably hosts a massive bill with penalties and interest for operating a rental car company unlicensed without remitting tax
I’d check with an accountant on that. You can still title a car under your LLC, list as a peer on Turo, and take advantage of the tax benefits. The commercial host program was focused on the insurance aspect, not taxes.
