I honestly can't think of anything more in character than Bear trolling you for 9 months straight while she got a vacation and lived her best, fat mare life. Her new husband is so handsome!!! They've got a ton of color possibilities - basically all the same ones she had with Ron - it just depends on their specific genes; chestnut, bay, black, smoky black, buckskin, palomino are all possible! Fingers crossed and excited to see what you get! Though it is Bear and I won't be surprised if she withholds her cream gene, lol! I would also love - just out of pure curiosity - to know what the money looks like in breeding, and the difference of doing live cover vs. AI since you did both.
Possible colours (percentages are worked out with unknown exact genetics but give a good guide!!) Buckskin - 35.16% Bay - 35.16% Black - 11.72% Smokey Black - 11.72% Red (chestnut/sorrel) - 3.13% Palomino - 3.13% So a pretty large chance of a buckskin!! 🤞 for you Meg, all the best ☺️
to add on to this, these stats are assuming heterozygous extension and agouti for both mare and stallion (Ee/Aa). percentages would defo change if either horse is homozygous extension (EE) and if bear is homozygous for agouti (AA). which would change their ability to produce red-based (ee) or black-based foals (E-/aa) respectively. either way, there's a definite guarantee that a bay-base (E-/A-) will be a possibility for the foal.
I think you should definitely do the cost breakdown. I'm curious how it compares to prices in the US. Breeders often don't get the credit they deserve. The financial and emotional expense is insurmountable. Hopefully, the future owners of your future foals appreciate your dedication.
Meg, at the stud farm I once worked at, we also recommended a third scan at 45 days to see the foal. Because at that time the foal would be there with the umbilical cord visible. Just a thought. Love from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada. 💖 💖 🇨🇦 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
💯 we always do a 42day - we do a 14day to check for twins, have done 30day (but its not really as crucial as the 42) and then we have done a 60day - that was with my first ever breed with a very special mare and we saw the little "batling" very clear in there (looks like a bat in a hammock 😅) - we were also just down the road from the Vet Hospital so it was as safe as possible for us to do that "late season" scan - I also used the footage and information gathered in my Uni dissertation so my mare and fur baby has been immortalized 💖
My mare was covered last August...was scanned in September...vet said she was empty... As it was late in the year I didn't bother again... She was send to stud again in May this year...didn't come into season... The short story is...we got up Saturday morning 9th... And Sally had given birth during the night to the most beautiful filly foal... We are still in shock...
problem with that comes when no one shares your foresight for bloodlines and you cant buy anything you want - and what you do breed ends up being just the horse you want 😇🦄
It may help to "burrow" a miniature pony stud, to stable Bear next too, for a few months. It may help to increase her cycles, hormones and receptiveness during estrus. A bonus would be that increasing hormones, speeding up or lengthening hear cycles, would also help her burn of weight by increasing her internal metabolism, which would help eliminate any fat building up around her ovaries and uterus. Just a thought, sometimes going back to a slightly more natural state helps.
Isn’t Don Dante a handsome fellow 😍 Fingers crossed she takes this time Meg! That would be a lovely little event prospect right there. The preservatives in mayo analogy absolutely cracked me up 😂
Don Dante is stunning i have seen him online on and off and admired him. Bear looks "comfy" bless her, fingers crossed ..... also your wee little Goblin is growing so fast :) how cute is she
well I am not, there are thousands of horses that go to slaughter every year that would make adorable pets and riding horses. why not adopt instead of wasting resources going through all this trouble breeding especially since meg is not a professional breeder. its exhausting to watch and seems like such a waste.
@@bonniemclean6969 agreed when ppl backyard breed, I'd agree a little with breeding Millie, however Bear has her own competition record made it to badminton has a cracking jump etc just a bit small and fire-y, but breeding to a more mellow and chill stallion with an even better competition record is far more sustainable as you're breeding for a horse unlikely to be found in the slaughter pipeline or a rescue shelter. Also, in Millie and Ettie's defence, she is showing fab potential and even if Meg didn't keep her then she could go on to have a successful competition career herself with the potential we've seen thus far. Just think about the reasoning to the breeding as well as the ethics and it makes a lot more sense, but like I say I do agree backyard breeding is very unethical so don't think this is an attack on you at all ☺️
There Will always be a need for good riding horses. Adopting isnt for everyone. You dont know What you end up with in most cases (age, health, training) and most have alot of bad bagage that you have to deal with. Not to mention breeding your own riding horse that You’ll have for the next 25+ years is such an awsome experience.
Please don’t get discouraged, I grew up with my parents breeding Arabians, we had a similar mare, absolute hot head to ride, if she didn’t come in wet through you’d think she was sick because she jogged everywhere, even to stand while on her back she did the best piaffe you have ever seen, she had a habit of “absorbing” the foals early on, she missed her first take, absorbed her second take, absorbed twins, and then had a colt, a very beautiful colt at that, we had every test and check you could possibly give a brood mare, we knew she could carry because we had her 6 year old daughter, she was very attached to her daughter and suffered with separation anxiety, so to put her in foal we had to put her daughter in foal too because if we took her daughter out for a ride she would piaffe and scream at the stable door until her daughter came home, so to give her every chance they were put in foal on the same day and both gave birth within 24 hours of each other, so don’t give up, you’ll get there x
I feel really sorry for all your worry and stress, trying to put a Bear in foal. When I had my mare, years ago. she got pregnant by accident when someone let a young stallion in her field without realising, and without any prenatal care or scans, as it wasn’t planned. She gave birth to a healthy filly, plus three other mares too. Good look with Bear and I hope she is in foal now. Ettie is just adorable xx
Don’t be discouraged. It took us two years of trying to get a foal from Crystal and lots of inseminations. As far as cost goes… I don’t even want to know how much i’ve spent 😭
definitely do a breakdown video of costs, and compare how it can be when the horse plays ball, like with Millie. not a lot of people know the cost it take to get a foal on the ground, and then why adult horses should cost a good amount (for a good healthy horse)
Hi Meg, skim milk is used as an extender for a stallions seman it has a natural sugar in it that helps with the seman when traveling to the mare. I have no idea what was added to Ron’s seman in the UK, but I think quite a few breeders in the U.S. do it that way. Bless little Bears heart I truly do hope that she settles for you when you take her to the new stallion. Lovely video Meg, I always enjoy them, very much. Jane from America 😎👍🐎🐴🧑🏻🦰
Don Dante is so handsome so I am keeping everything crossed that Bear will be preggers! Thank you for sharing the highs and the lows. You keep it real for people xxx
Awesome stallion! I hope it works this time, and Bear can shed a few pounds for her health in the meantime. And well done saying "semon" so many times, I feel like 2021 Meg would have been blushing , hah
Gotta say you’ve got a lot more comfortable talking about this and I would definitely watch the foal price video! It sounds so interesting although you (or your bank account ) probably don’t find it as fun!
Don Dante is gorgeous. Maybe consider another cross with him with Milly in a year or two -- you might get another black beauty like Milly :) Never a dull moment with the Teddy Bear.
Lovely stallion really hope Bear is in foal. The old method of using a stallion that runs out with his mares used to be the answer for difficult maiden mare.
That sounds like a great plan, and Dante is lovely. Do you want a buckskin? Since Millie had the best baby, do you have any plans to breed her again? Thanks sooo much for keeping us in the loop!
Lovely choice. Based on a lifetime in horses, I agree you have a much higher chance of success for an older maiden mare using fresh. If this does not work, going all natural in pasture or live cover with a Section D, possibly dilute, top performance potential pony, and getting a purebred would not be a bad way to jump start the fertility either. If this one works, however, adding these Grand Prix dressage lines will likely give you amazing movement and temperament - which is much appreciated in eventing also. With this lovely stallion choice you may very well end up with one of the best moving and level headed event ponies out there. Your experience is quite common with older maidens and is one reason you are so smart first breeding mares such as Jam when younger if you have any chance to do so. It puts you years ahead of the game allowing you to start another generation as you produce (in both senses) and develop their dams. It also ensures that top mare lines live on. Many delay breeding so much that great mare lines are forever lost. Embryo transfer is often used if all else fails. BTW, Millie produced such wonderful movement, structure, early jumping potential and temperament in Ettie, have you considered putting her to Ron?
I know the feelings, tried 8 times with my mare, 2 different stallions and 2 years later we found out she wasn’t ovulating when in season so fingers crossed we’ve cracked it this time
My Welsh D mare also didn’t get in foal this year or last with AI (and so many thousands of dollars)I’ve been following along and feeling your struggles with Bear. I’m going to try a different stallion live cover next year. Best of luck to you for a gorgeous 2023 foal, I think the local husband will be key 😁❤️
Meg, I wish you the best of luck with breeding Bear the next two years. I will follow you through with all the highs and lows we shall face and I am excited to see what happens. Don Dante is such a handsome guy!
It’s amazing that if you have a mare and someone else has a stallion of any sort and if you don’t plan for a foal, sod”s law will happen and you could get a mule/hinny or if your lucky a baby horse!!
I knew a mare with similar problems, just an absolutely impressive athlete and she does have a few descendants out there but having babies just wasn't her strong suites and having another mare carrying the baby is frowned upon it seems. At the very least you have Ettie who acts like her dad was Secretariat. Never give up on breeding your dream horse, it'll just take time
I loved seeing Bear and her new husband I am glad you are not giving up and we are all a 100% behind you I have my fingers and toes crossed and we will get a Bear baby he is handsome boy she is a lucky girl
Followed your journey last year with Bear and I was going through the process of breading my mare as well. Took us 7 collections- 2 were lost in transit- so 5 AI attempts. My mare had previously had a foal, but it was live cover...finally, she did take and we got a beautiful healthy filly this year, but you are NOT kidding when you say its EXPENSIVE! And not for the faint of heart. Thinking of you and Hobbit as you ride this rollercoaster! Sending positive (+) vibes.
If you r comfortable with doing a whole video of prices that would be amazing and I would definitely spread it around as we r looking to do it- maybe have a slightly more serious tone? Xx good luck with your journey!
I had my second home bred this year after an horrible scare this winter and I thought I’ve lost him. This will be my last; as my 1st was a rollercoaster as well. Im surprised of how much different it is where I am as the scans goes. I had scan at 14 days; 1 month; 2 months (optional but the repro vet asked me to do the sexing for practice for his students); then 9 months and a month prior to make sure the foal was positioned good. You’re absolutely right, having a foal isn’t cheap. And the cost of emotional distress when it’s not going well is to be considered too.
I've missed my mares 2 month scan and I'm wondering should we do one now at three months or to just leave her. We've to trailer an hour both out and back from the practice so I don't think we'll be doing one at nine months.
Don Dante looks amazing! I am so glad that you have found a way through this with bear, and I can't wait to see how it turns out! I'd also be really interested in the cost breakdowns, as I have never really seen any thing breeding related before!
Good luck meg!! I hope you get an amazing foal, fingers crossed a buckskin, but anything at this point would be nice lol. thank you for allowing us too follow your crazy journey with Bear. Also that is the most beautiful stallion, pure black stallion, omg every 10 yr old horse girl is screaming rn.
@@Avesrides i'm sorry do i know you? that scared me. 😭 EDIT: 7 HOURS LATER I REALISED THAT YOU MIGHT BE SUBBED TOO ME I FORGOT I HAD A CHANNEL. IM SORRY HIIIII!!
So lovely to see Bear on your channel! I’ve missed seeing her & can just imagine how much you’ve been missing her! Don Dante is beautiful & seems like such a sweetheart too. Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes to plan this time! I cannot believe how much Ettie has grown! And is it my imagination or is she growing a proper mane now?
I have had dressage horses for 25 yrs and the most “reliable” ones have all had Deniro lines. Salinero will bring you a bit of “blood” and marry well with the chunkier Donnerhall line.
That's great news Meg. Great video. When I bred my mare, she wouldn't take if she was on the heavy side, I used to have to thin her down a bit for her to take. If Bear doesn't take this time, might consider some exercise and diet to slim her down a bit first. Just a thought.
It’s such a hard game breeding and when it goes well it’s amazing !! Good luck to bear with the lovely don Dante, and keeping everything crossed 🤞🏻 for you guys x
Well, I was thinking another stallion would be better for Bear which is none of my business, but it would be a change maybe for the better. I only commented to bring more money to you. I adore your baby foal and your sweet mum. Best of luck and congrats again on Badminton and the palomino filly!!!!!!!!!!.
Isn’t Dante just a lovely boy! I’ve been following his journey for years and you should get a lovely foal! However I did hear in your video that you mentioned he’s only competed up to Inter1 when he actually has competed very successfully at Grand Prix! I wish you the best of luck with your foaling journey!
I have to say, you were born to do endorsements- you are seriously a natural at it and I actually even enjoy hearing you talk about the product, you do it in such a fun friendly way, it's not the usual awkward plug, you are super fun to watch in any situation, haha! Even when you have to say the word "semen" over and over again, haha! Fingers crossed for Bear, and I need that water stuff, I NEVER drink enough! I love Hint water, but it's expensive, I gotta check this stuff out!
