I just wanted everyone to know that I had to edit out number 21 which was King Crimson because they blocked the video. I used nine seconds of 21st Century Schizoid Man and their management company did a manual takedown of the entire video for those 9 seconds.

Another vote for 1978! Dire Straits debut in the midst of the punk era proved that the clean strat sound was alive and well! Every track on that album was fantastic.

I graduated from high school in 1978. In addition to the Police, Cars, Dire Straits, Devo (!) and Van Halen releasing their first albums that year, these were as well: the Stones, Some Girls; The Who, Who Are You; Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen; Stranger In Town, Bob Seger; Double Vision, Foreigner; Pieces of Eight, Styx; Excitable Boy, Warren Zevon; But Seriously Folks, Joe Walsh; Parallel Lines, Blondie; This Year's Model, Elvis Costello; Hemispheres, Rush; 52nd Street, Billy Joel; and Jesus of Cool, Nick Lowe. I remember my favorite radio station playing the Stones "Some Girls", the entire album, uninterrupted, on the day it was released. It was an amazing year for music, unmatched by any other since.

Not only was it incredibly good, it ushered in a whole new era of rock. It really changed everything. All of the shiny, over produced, pop nu metal became irrelevant when this album came out. The 2000's were the way they were because of The Strokes the same way Nevermind shaped the 90's. This list not having it, especially after his preface on how he chose this list, is bizarre.
@MikeBaglivi
@MikeBaglivi 11 месяцев назад
@@Alex-kd5jt I wouldn’t QUITE equate it with the impact Nevermind had, but The Strokes debut undeniably ushered in a new and very exciting time for rock and roll-unquestionably the last “landmark” moment for the genre. And while the moment of quality and inspired creativity in New York City and Williamsburg was short-lived, The Strokes were clearly the last band standing(just check out “The New Abnormal” for proof)-in my opinion, even towering over the likes of Jack White.

Yes, surprised Black Sabbath's first album wasn't listed - although, based on Rick's criteria, I can understand. Their first ablum was more blues rock, wasn't until their second album that they became true rock legends. Absolutely amazing tracks on the first album, but much blusier. I wouldn't list Bad Company here - great albums, great bands, but really didn't have the legs of most of the other bands listed (with the exception of Temple of the Dog which only had the 1 album). I also don't see Bad Co as defining, as they were very much the Deep Purplesque band. I can also understand Deep Purple not listed here as their first album was quite filled with a ton of hits, with the exception of Hush. And yes, the Southern Rock bands were completely left out - Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynrd, etc. All missing (not sure if its because they are "hardcore" blockers.

Glad of your placement of Led Zeppelin's first album. January of 1969, my brother, Jim, two friends, and I were honored to see Zeppelin play at the legendary Grande Ballroom in Detroit, MI (100 miles south from our home town, the village of Deckerville, MI) At the end of their set and many encores, as they were leaving the stage, Jimmy Page stopped at the edge of the stage to shake hands with members of the audience. We were sitting on the floor-- no chairs on the ballroom floor, just feet and butts -- right in front, first "row", between Page and Plant. I am only 5'2" in height so Jimmy and I could not complete a proper handshake, but our hands did meet. Zeppelin was new, and wonderful.

Hell yes! I first heard it 20 years after it was released (1990). Opening with the title song... those bells and THAT riff... hooked on metal for life from that moment, forever trying to find something else as dark and majestic as that. There's no way that album should be excluded. Rick could have easily done the same thing as he did for Led Zep where he played the songs on his guitar to get around the 'blocking' issue.

The Strokes debut "Is This It" influenced almost every rock band that emerged in the 2000s and is one of the tightest most perfect albums out there. Yes, but do they stand amongst the pantheon that is the 60s and 70s rock God's? In my opinion, no, because they borrowed so much from the bands that are in the top 10. Which is dangerous rhetoric, because "well Zeppelin ripped off black music" so on and so forth. What I'm saying is, if the strokes deserve to be in it, then so does almost every band from the 60s and 70s, eventually pushing the strokes out. So.... I agree that it's a great record, even though at the time of its release I would have called it watered down radio rock. I didn't take to bands like the strokes until much later when actual radio rock became absolute garbage. Queens of the stone age come to mind for similar reasons.

Moody Blues - Days of Future Past was ground breaking in that it included a full live orchestra Seal - may not pass as "rock" but with the variety of genres that get into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" (and those quotes were intended), I think his debut album could be considered Ambrosia (1975) featured "Holdin' on to Yesterday" and "Nice, Nice" but arguable introduced one of the most underrated bands into the popular mix -- A++ on writing and performance Foghat (1972) - featured "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" - a nice old blues remake, but in a driving style that was ahead of its time. Toto - (1978) - Included "Hold the Line" which was a huge tune, but showcased the "new wrecking crew" for all they could do - and it only got better

Rick I know you may likely never see this and it’s 2 years since you uploaded this video but man this content was GREAT!! You should seriously consider doing a series with your old guitar students. Derek in 1989 asked to learn Blue by Nirvana. Derek had incredible taste!! Bring Derek on and share stories. Where is Derek now? In person or video chat would be AWESOME!!

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses. Flawless from start to finish. It was the blue print for UK music in the 90s. Jimmy Page called John Squire the most intuitive guitarist he’d ever seen. The Who wanted Reni to replace Kieth Moon.

Rick’s slight hesitation before his statement about Hybrid Theory prior to the clip really hits hard. I’m reminded of Adam Sandler’s tribute to Chris Farley, where even people who didn’t experience Chester and Chris in their heydays can appreciate just how much they meant to others.
