Seeing you break composure about Dr. Crippen's bathroom bit bought so much light into an otherwise dark story. I enjoyed that so much I had to rewind and rewatch!
13:59 I can’t believe this guy just seamlessly fused all three of my favorite subjects into the first 14 minutes of this video- true crime, history, and poetry- ARE U KIDDING ME?! This channel is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. Bravo sir 🫡👏🏻
Your dignity for all involved in these cases is admirable. I've seen far too many true crime channels and presenters who either overly exaggerate the events or disrespect the wishes of families of the victims or perpetrators. Sending support from West Virginia in the US!
Compilations are much appreciated .. especially a compilation of shorter tales that aren't long enough for a single video. Appreciate all you do, Paul.. fascinating cases! 👍
Of all the many tellings of Crippen's case, yours will always be my favourite. Watching you try to control your bafflement and little skit about a man not escorting a male guest to the loo is always a delight.
I love it when you leave the bloopers in exactly when they happen. It tells us that we're allowed to laugh at obvious absurdity. Thank you for being human, and such a great story teller! I've actually watched this particular episode at least 3 times, and it gets me every single time!
My daughter woke me up this morning at 5:30 and as I was going to lay back down I saw the notification for your show. I was SO glad! I love listening to your voice and love the old world vibe you bring. Good job, please don't ever stop.
You cracked me up with Dr. Crippens bathroom argument with his wife. My goodness! IF I was to argue with my husband about him accompanying another man to the bathroom, he'd have me committed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for these! My beloved, late husband was an Austrian cop; I learned so much from him, and all of it was fascinating. You present the cases clearly and with such gentle elegance that they don't seem crude or sensationalistic in the telling. Bravo!
I really like the changes in location without skipping a beat in the narrative. Very effective. Also your voice is wonderful and calming. Even the most heinous crime sounds better when described in such a calming manner. I would like to see compilations of shorter stories. There are many stories to tell that don't have a lot of information available for a longer documentary.
True Crime for history enthusiasts. I'm appreciative of all of the details you've included which give the stories much needed depth and context. While most true crime channels tend to rely on sensationalism which can strip the stories of their real world implications and the victims of humanity.
I love your show, especially the longer ones that explore a common theme. And you're always so nattily dressed. Love your newsboy cap! Keep up the good work.
I feel so sorry for Yvonne. I find it truly sad that someone who knce claimed to love you would then be so disgusted by your mere presence. It's clear he never actually loved her and only realised this after many years. She deserved better than him. Truly a tragedy the turn her life took.
These are the most professional, well researched and well scripted true crime productions on RU-vid. Took a long time for the algorithm to lead me here, but better late than never.
Fun channel! Cora Crippen was pretty clearly the body in Dr. Crippen’s cellar: her head and torso were wrapped in Crippen’s pajamas. Poor Ruth: the transcripts of her trial, show her to be a very clear eyed, no nonsense and straightforward woman. Very likable, except for the whole “murder” thing. But she was obviously suffering from severe PTSD, and should never have been executed. Really enjoy your work! Looking forward to more! Well played you.
...Pierre got what was coming to him. His treatment of Yvonne in that day was brutal; when statue mattered, her embarrassment of his pompous flippant cruelty of his wife drove her to sheer madness. I don’t agree with what she did, but in that day, divorce just wasn’t an option!
Did he deserve to die? Maybe not, but it is very hard to pity him with how immensely abusive he was. Very easy to pity his wife, who seemingly attempted everything to reclaim her dignity.
Yeah, I'm only a few minutes into the 'Pierre' story & I already hate the guy. Your partner deciding to be with someone else _always_ sucks, but at least in today's world, the wife would've had the option to divorce in an equitable manner. But back then... Divorce (which only _he_ could ask for at that time) would've completely destroyed her reputation, likely gotten her shunned by society/kicked out if she attended a church, rendered her financially destitute & completely un-date-able, & worst of all: she may have lost ANY rights to their children, even visitation would've been completely up to him (& you _know_ he'd never have allowed it, & would've had them calling the mistress 'Mother'). No, I don't agree with her killing him, & there should've been _some sort_ of punishment for it, but it's so hard to blame her for the desperation/frustration finally reaching a flashpoint =( I wish we taught young people, even my age (late 30's) more about what life was like for women during that era. So much of it is over-romanticized.
I absolutely loved the part in which you broke composure, I’m looking forward to more of that in the upcoming videos! Your compilation videos are so well done and interesting, a big yes from me for that.
I'm obviously not alone in loving the fact that you let us peek behind the veil of your usual rock solid composure and laugh at the bollocking Crippen got for not carrying out his toilet duties. I didn't think there was much more to learn about the Crippen case but I will forever think of 'Toilet-Gate' from now on. Thank you!
Thank you for all that you do. I'm so glad to have found your channel. Your voice is so pleasant to listen to and its always cool when you can actually go to certain locations. Looking forward to more videos and compilations
Well Done! Buenissimo! Mr. Pierrepoint said it best. Deterrence of crime cannot be served at the gallows..It must be taught before a crime; that is a problem unsolved since the beginning of man...
Thank you so much for presenting these excellent reviews with such accuracy and interest. You have a remarkable talent for putting yourself, as the narrator, right at the centre of that particular period. I was an 8 year old schoolboy at the time of Ruth Ellis's execution, and I can say for certain that Capital Punishment "brutalises" society. I never quite got over the trauma of being so aware of the efforts which went towards getting Ruth a reprieve and yet, the British State, still killed her. Congratulations to you; for all your excellent efforts to bring these stories to our attention.
Thank you for leaving the blooper in! On a serious note, I liked it that you opened the subject, saying "As many people believe" I have doubts, too. What if Belle killed one of her lovers.? I'm serious. She'd have a lot more time to dismember the body for starters. Then she made one last gesture of contempt for her husband and disappeared. No notice, no letter. She did take a few of her things, mostly ones that wouldn't be missed. It wasn't unusual for women back then to just have a few dresses so she left behind the 'showy' ones. "Gone Girl" could happen then too, perhaps more easily. When her friends started getting suspicious and hounded him, he made up a story that was probably close to the truth. So he trapped himself.
This is why I’m against the death penalty - we don’t get it right every time and feeling bloodthirsty doesn’t help. (Also - it’s shown to not help victims loved ones, costs more than life in prison and is not a deterrent).
I just discovered your channel 2 nights ago. I can’t wait to be off of work for a few days and binge watch. Absolutely excellent content and wonderful narration.
I'm. So glad I found your channel. I just love what you do and how you do.. And for once I wish the stories were longer. I just really enjoy your work. Thank you.
I really love your presentation of these kinds of things, you're awesome! I could listen to you talk for hours. Keep it up - I only found your channel last week and it's been so good to watch the videos
I haven't even started the video yet!, but I already am already given it a thumbs up. I am quite a recent watcher, but I really like your presentation and research. Something informative, educational and entertaining. Thank you. Back to the video. Greetings from Dimboola in Victoria, Australia. 🙂
You're a great host! Interesting, informative, to the point and gracious! I only looked you up because 'Well, I never' was a regular utterance of my much loved Grandmother. Keep up the fine content. It's very good Pal!
I just recently found your videos, I haven’t stopped watching since I did. It’s great to hear cases that aren’t normally talked about! Thank you for your originality!
The more videos of yours I watch, the more I appreciate them. Your style, the quality of your research, and now also your sense of humour being shown... I know RU-vid is one of many media that can easily be used to portray a certain image, but if only half of the person you show us is who you genuinely are as a person, I really like you.
Would very much enjoy compilations of shorts along with these sorts of compilations! Sometimes really good stories are in bite-sized pieces, and listening to an anthology of them is very enjoyable.
Seeing you laugh was the highlight of this video. You always are so composed, so seeing a bit of your light-hearted side shine through was wonderful. 😊
oh i can't wait for the new crime ones- especially the historical ones are so perfect for this style of presentation. (love the "well i never" closing as well- like im sad at the videos that dont end that way)-- thank you so much for putting these out! ---- if my history classes had been done like this i would have aced every class.
Mr. Brodie, while I am always intrigued by your stories, I am total bound by your way of telling these stories. I am soon to starting a RU-vid channel concerning music and I shall be giving you shoutouts for your channel! Please continue your stories as I find listening a delight!
And I also enjoy the crisp smart English I would hear my teachers trying to teach us . Next time I go to India or Pakistan I am going to meet them touch their feet, because in our culture no one is superior to ones teachers, not parents not even god Thankyou Sir for your stimulation mentally Your posts are so interesting and your speaking way beautiful
Poor Yvonne. She was exactly what you said - a good woman who had been treated appallingly. I have little doubt that she intended to kill herself with those weapons, and only took them up in desperation. And poor Ruth. She had such a hard go at life - if she'd only had a better opportunity, I doubt she'd have gone to such lengths. When all someone knows is abuse and violence, they know no other way to react.
I don’t agree with killing but while hearing the story of how he treated her made me so mad. I can understand when the wives on the court cheered on her. Also for the mistress is the most disgusting person
Being the former wife of a husband like Yvonne's, I say, "Bravo, Yvonne, bravo!". And for all the housewives to cheer says a lot about how common it is what men put us through.
Very interesting stories. I couldn’t help but chuckle when you completely lost it while trying to tell us about the Dr Crippen bathroom scene!! It, I must commend you sir, as you recovered quite well to carry on your story! Thank you for sharing! ❤️✝️
I thoroughly enjoy your channel, somehow despite the gruesomeness of the stories you manage to make them very interesting without being the stuff of nightmares. Thank you.
I really appreciate these compilations so I can set them and focus on a task while I listen and not have to worry about the algorithm playing something I don't want. Thanks Paul!
Would love to see a colab with Mr Ballen, Adrian from Coffeehouse Crime, and Mike Oh from That Chapter, and Paul Brodie from Well, I never. Find the most epic story for them to take turns telling us, but make it like a Netflix Documentary. I'd pay money to see that.
I would most definitely in interested in a group of stories, grouped together, i find each and every one of your blogs, well and thoroughly studied and researched, without, bias and 'fluff' that other people use to build such stories out; leaving you, wondering, just what, if anything is factual. Ì much prefer your renditions, most enjoyable and educational. Many thanks, I look forward to each and every one. From Christchurch, New Zealand
You're such a fantastic story teller! Those, such as yourself, are so rare and so very needed in today's world. Thank you for sharing your gift with us! Have you ever thought of perhaps giving a Edgar Allen Poe Death Mystery or even a reading for Halloween? That would be wonderful
Being a great story is truly among the best of the oldest pastimes. As a young boy I would love to listen to my grandpa tell of how things were when he was younger. To be able to tell a story is an art that few people can pull off. You are among those who can do this! I would bet that if you have children or grandchildren you would be so loved.
I love your narration of these stories. You definitely make them much more interesting and compelling. Your laughter at his being belittled for not showing the guy to the bathroom was hilarious. Because it was absolutely hilarious! Can you imagine such an ole bitty hen of a wife? Almost makes you feel sorry for him. Thanks and keep it up!
I really enjoy your channel your voice is so calming and the way you tell the stories show you really do your research you remind me of a professor I love stuff about history and facts thank you so much for your stories I look forward to hear what your next ones gonna be about
The longer stories are great to go to sleep to. If I can only get the volume just right it would be awesome. The commercials are louder than you speak so it jumps way up and startles me lol. You do a great job and the wide variety of topics that you cover is always interesting. So again thank you from the USA my friend!
Thanks for watching Fay-Amie! We're currently working on something like that. We'll be doing a compilation of crimes that may have escaped people's attention soon 😃 Also, we've 'Well, I Never - Stars' if you fancy something a little different :) ru-vid.com/show-UCtfmnqfNF9pBqoS5Gk-Mscg
Absolutely love your channel!! Although my coworkers think there's a limit to how many murder mystery's you can listen to....(lies!!) Is there any chance we can get a blooper reel please???
Wow!! I 've just discovered your channel and am absolutely delighted to have done so. Well researched, beautifully told, giving little known cases their chance to be told. As a huge true crime fan I am delighted to find such a wonderful channel. Thank you for your hard work.
