Searching for Madera Canyon Tarantulas (Aphonopelma madera) and other animals in the Santa Rita Mountains of Southern Arizona.

@@GeneralApathy you seemed comfortable with them, and came away looking vindicated for that. But someone posted a pic on reddit a while ago, holding a dead one, and everyone flipped out lol Maybe few people have any experience holding them? I've only ever carried one out of a parking lot using some napkins-it seemed chill.

I actually love finding tarantulas and scorpions under rocks and scrapes. It’s so much easier when you don’t have to dig them out!

I first visited Madera Canyon in the early 80's. Within about 10 minutes I collected several species of grasshoppers.

They do this quite frequently, though I am still not sure why. It does not seem to be correlated with defensive behavior from what I can tell.

Have you ever been to Big Bend? Perhaps more interesting botanically- the Chisos oak especially, which uniquely resembles species from Miocene-Pliocene California- but I'm sure you could find some interesting herps/inverts
