Searching for California Warrior Beetles (Pasimachus californicus) and other animals near the border of Mexico in Southern Arizona.
Corrections / additional comments:
00:39 - They are not found Texas. Error made by referring to outdated taxonomy
07:11 - Shininess is correlated with burrowing propensity in scorpions
08:02 - This one is Moneilema appressum, not M. gigas, however, most of the information presented remains true
Chapters:
00:00 - Northern Black-Tailed Rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus molossus)
01:10 - Intro
01:30 - California Warrior Beetle #1 (Pasimachus californicus)
02:43 - Western Short-Horn Stick Insect (Parabacillus hesperus)
04:22 - Mountain Skink (Plestiodon callicephalus)
05:26 - California Warrior Beetle #2 (Pasimachus californicus)
06:27 - Arizona Smoothclaw Scorpion (Diplocentrus spitzeri)

i always appreciate that your videos don't have any of the obnoxious dramatic editing or voiceover a lot of other critter youtube channels have, just good info and your commentary! :)

The longhorn beetle was pretty cool. I feel it's a bit surprising that it's evolved to be such a bold black color living on that bright green cactus. Sure it's obvious that the cactus makes it difficult for predators to nom on them but it still seems strange to me. Honestly it's almost "aposematic" if we're considering the environment it lives in.

Well, as said in the video it may be mimicing another beetle that sprays noxious chemicals. Better to look dangerous than be well hidden apparently.
@GeneralApathy
@GeneralApathy 9 месяцев назад
Diurnal and black is an unlikely combination for longhorns, but if Moneilema spp. are indeed mimicking Eleodes spp., then that coloration might be more advantageous than crypsis.

When I was a kid, I used to absolutely LOVE visiting family friends in Tucson so that I could go out into the washes at dusk and catch critters!!!

I grew up visiting family and friends in Arizona, in both the Phoenix and Tucson areas. Our friends owned a biker bar in Tucson called the Bashful Bandit, along with over 20 Harley Davidson's, but the coolest thing to me about visiting them was all the critters we could find at night with flashlights when we explored the washes!!

Honestly I’m surprised the channel doesn’t have more subs. It’s the most unique of its kind on RU-vid. Informative with a palpable respect for the creatures, with fantastic audio and footage. This channel is a gem.

I've come to find a lot of comfort in this channel. The exact perfect amount of inflection to keep me engaged and calm. It helps with information retention too. I consume a lot of youtube edutainment and not a lot of it sticks, but, for a small example, I see house centipedes much differently now and with a lot of appreciation thanks to this channel.

Awesome! I recently collected one of these down in the Pajarito mts., along with a Fiery Searcher Beetle. Unfortunately, the Pasimachus ate the Calosoma! I certainly wasn't expecting that, but I guess that just goes to show those massive jaws can be put to some serious use. I also recently found Pasimachus viridans in the Santa Ritas while I was filming a video, the smaller but much prettier cousin of this species, and quite possibly my favorite carabid. Also, nice Camponotus ocreatus in the outro, one of my favorite native Camponotus species. Glad to see a tiny bit of ant content here, even if it's just 5 seconds in the outro :D

These are very interesting creatures, thank you for sharing. Why, do the Arizona Smoothclaw Scorpions have the Subacular Tubercle? (Congratulations on the 200,000 subscribers)
@GeneralApathy
@GeneralApathy 9 месяцев назад
Thank you. It has been suggested that the subaculear tubercle has evolved so that scorpions do not sting each other fatally during mating rituals. This trait is found in other scorpion taxa as well.

I find it fascinating that there are places where you can find such big beetles and scorpions just by turning around some stones. I'm from northern europe and the insects here are usually very small and inconspicuous. When I look under stones there are usually some Isopods, worms and slugs.

I don't know what skinks are native to west Alabama but growing up there were a bunch of em that looked a lot like this mountain skink around our house, i guess they were a bit darker and the stripes ran down their back but definitely that bright blue tail...there was one that lived under our front porch (concrete slab) i am not exaggerating when i tell you it was at least a foot long its body looked about as thick as a cucumber My parents thought it was just my childish imagination for the longest time until one day it just came out and basked a bit in front of everyone One of the earliest i was right moments in my life and it's all thanks to skinkzilla
@michaeldahms7006
@michaeldahms7006 9 месяцев назад
It would have been a 5 lined Skink. Females and young have the stripes and blue tails and males become more brownish with an orange head.

@@michaeldahms7006 thanks for the info, i don't remember seeing near as many males then unless they get relatively large before the pattern change maybe they were just harder to spot
