That’s so sad. I wish there was a way you could have helped them. I had welcomed my backyard canal to a family of burrowing owls since high school when one followed me home after some tears flooded his burrow post football game with soda. I wasn’t a wildlife specialist but the owl decided to make a home in my backyard so I let it

Always strange to notice how many birds don't build their own nests. Even tree hollows are rare in nature. (Well, rare in my limited experience 😅)

Do you live anywhere near oaks? Oak trees generally have knots that eventually become hollowed areas where birds can nest, including even Great Horned Owls. They’re apex predators, so they’re not shy about being seen, and they’re active during the day. They may also be active during the night, but I’m generally not out birding in the dark, so I can’t speak to that.

FUN FACT: Owls’ eyes are fixed in place, so to compensate for this, they can turn their heads 270 degrees. (Excuse me, Danielle, if you’ve covered this in an earlier post-I’m relatively new to your channel.)
