Some thoughts about lightsabers in real life

There, I finally talked about lightsabers / laser swords / plasma blades etc. Are you happy now? :)
So these are just some meanderings about how an actual lightsaber would handle if it could be made (and didn't produce lethal heat or radiation), and what some potential safety risks might be.
Any "it's just a movie" comments will be shot down because they are utterly pointless. Of course science-fiction is just for entertainment, and so is this video. Nothing to get agitated about. ;)

A lightsaber in real life would be more widely used than any blaster for one simple reason: it would be the tool of choice for metal workers, carpenters, builders, and construction workers. The ultimate cutting tool on the go.

@Vyrisus and in starwars lore the lightsaber could just cut the bullets unless the bullets are made from lightsaber resistant material. And in real science (because they go into space in star wars) physical bullets would be worthless because zero gravity would mess with the guns mechanism, so in space you would be forced to use energy or plasma weapons which are hypothetical in this case

@@alphayun7401 No because a modern gunshot is a lot faster than a Blaster bolt or a Slug of a Tusken Breech loader.. In Episode 1, Qui Gon stabs his lightsaber into a solid steel blast door on the Trade Federation ship. The steel super heats and becomes a sort of magma, and this is with prolonged, sustained contact. He has to slowly force it through, too. No vaporizing, especially not with a bullet traveling a such a high speed and making very brief contact. It would just get hot and pass through the blade.

Yeah, because the Trade Federation ships blast doors are made of regular steel, instead of something way more resistant to damage, especially against energy type weapons that are so common on the setting.

6:01 In the old canon (I.E. before the Disney purchase) traditional guns did exist. Most people don't use them, because Blasters provide so many benefits (a modern assault rifle normally holds 30 bullets, while even a blaster pistol could fire 500 times before you needed too "reload"), but they do give advantages against Lightsaber users. Unlike a blaster bolt, the "slugthrower" bullets melt and pass through the lightsaber. So, instead of having a regular bullet flying at your face, now you have MOLTEN LEAD flying at your face instead at the same velocity.
@TheSorakiba
@TheSorakiba 9 лет назад
notbobby125 Personally, I think that the blade of a lightsaber is hot enough to vaporize a metal as soft as lead... I mean, it is strong enough to slice through several feet thick super hardened space metal blaster-doors like a hot knife through butter... I think that a traditional "bullet", would just be instantly vaporized (maybe with a slight "pop" sound) if hit by lightsaber's blade.
@notbobby125
@notbobby125 9 лет назад
Sorakiba Xkcd (in XKCD's "What if" website) thought about the closest we could get too a bullet passing through a lightsaber, a bullet passing through a Lighting Strike, and found the bullet didn't stay in the lighting long enough to be melted. Look up XKCD "Bullet Lighting" and you should be able to find what I am talking about.

notbobby125 How big around would you say that a typical lightsaber blade is? (I'd say somewhere between one and a half to two inches, would you concur with that?)

Lightning itself is only a few centimetres, the flash makes it look much larger
@TheSorakiba
@TheSorakiba 9 лет назад
mistercococat peace Exactly the point the I was going to make if he had replied to me... Lightning, like you said, is at best a few centimeters wide, while the "blade" of a lightsaber looks to me to be about and inch and a half, to two inches... MUCH wider than a bolt of lightning... In addition, we do not know how hot the plasma of the blade actually is... but we can surmise that it is MUCH hotter than a simple bolt of lightning... A bolt of lightning is about 50,000º, that's it... On the other hand, we have machines here capable of generating plasma at 2,000,000,000º... When I was 22, the roof of my car was struck by lightning... it did not melt through the roof, it just shorted out the electrical system of the car, and blow out the tires, leaving a scorch pattern on the roof... I do not think that a bullet passing through a simple bolt of lightning would melt the bullet,... but a lightsaber is not a bolt of lightning... I believe that it is thousands of times hotter, otherwise it would act more like a "welder", and take time to cut through simple steel, much less cutting through several feet of hardened blaster space metal like a "hot knife through butter".

They can be activated with the force, like obi wan does in epi. 1, I used to think it was with finger or handprints when actually in the hand though, that way not just anyone can pick it up. @bjrnwesth7772
@bjrnwesth7772 9 лет назад
***** With them training since childhood I don't think they need to "feel" it. They know it simply by muscle memory and stuff. But yes, the weightlessness is a point as to the weapon only being used by force sensitives. The typical fighting styles of the jedi involve fast flurries with barely any contact time - as there would be little point. If your opponent parries your strike, pushing through with a weightless blade would be less effective than making another from a different angle. The Old Republic "Return" cinematic trailer I feel gives a great shot at how you'd be fighting with a weightless blade and access to precognition.

They do, but it's correct term is Beskar, or Mandalorian Iron. However, it has limits, just like Cortosis does. It may be able to stop a few strikes from a Lightsaber, but if the fight becomes a knock-down, drag-out brawl (or if you're using a Lightsaber fighting style like Djem-So or Juyo) it will not be able to take continued punishment. There's actually a specific attack in the Djem-So fighting style that could EASILY defeat these metals. It's called the "Falling Avalanche", and it involves raining a series of heavy, overhand blows down on your opponent.

The reason only jedi/sith (force users) use the lightsaber is because they have the impossibly good reflexes that come with being strong with the force. Most people use blasters because for a normal person, bringing a sword to a gun fight is suicide, but because force users have a sort of "spidey sense" that allows them to react faster and deflect blasts, the lightsaber is preferred. If someone is highly trained in swordplay, but doesn't have these force powers they use something called a "vibrosword" that energizes a more traditional blade in a way that allows the wielder to deflect lightsabers and energy weapons without the risk of a massless blade.

@incogneat0901 9 лет назад
I think a shotgun would be the most effective way to shoot a Jedi. They can deflect bolts from blasters (apparently both the bolts and the lightsaber 'blades' have some kind of mass), but that lightsaber blade can only be at one place at a time. Also, considering how many get their arms and hands cut off, it's amazing they don't have some kind of guard.
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 9 лет назад
A guard primarily protects your fingers from steel swords sliding down the blade, lightsabers have never shown to act in such a way. Arms and hands you loose through aimed attacks, and well Jedi don't wear any armor in general because they are primarily advisor's and not a military force, they can fight but they aren't first deployment troopers... or any deployment for that matter.
@Sumguyinavan_
@Sumguyinavan_ 9 лет назад
actually, yes, the shotgun approach is the most effective method. Even a master of Soresu like Obi Wan could only deflect so many shots at once, hence his choice to wear plasteel armor through much of the Clone Wars the way MANY Jedi did during the era of the previous Sith Empire over 1000 years prior to the movies. Reflexes and short range premonition only get you so far when you have 30 bolts coming at you at once, and even less help when you have dozens of extremely small steel pellets fying at you faster than any human can react even with the aid of the Force. Bullets are better to kill a force sensitive than blaster bolts
@dribrom
@dribrom 9 лет назад
Justin Hurst No he can block the pellets with the force.... Well it depends of the training and how strong he is with the force. Think of the force as chi in kung-fu but on a more fantasy level. So in theory a jedi can do anything with the force. It's only up to the writers imagination that sets the limit, the lore does not. With the exception that not all jedi can do everything and some are more powerful in the force then others.
@punmastergeneral5548
@punmastergeneral5548 9 лет назад
I would actually think a flamethrower type device (such as those used by many renowned Jedi-hunting Mandalorians) would be more effective. A skilled Jedi could disintigrate, push away, or dodge a shotgun blast. A gout of flame would be harder to deal with (except possibly by using a force push, but then that could arguably stop any projectile as well).

I'm impressed you correctly pointed out that the blade of the lightsaber most likely won't have any noticeable weight to it. I find that a lot of swordfighting channels fail to realize this and take it into account in their commentary, but it is in fact an important point in the lore. It is the reason why it's almost impossible for the lightsaber to be used by non-Force users; Force-users are able to still mentally track the blade by sensing it through the Force since the crystal being used as an energy source is partly charged by the Force during the construction process.
@Carabas72

Although canonically the blades actually do have weight.
@Cyfiero
@Cyfiero 5 лет назад
@@Carabas72 No, canonically, the blades have such negligible weight that they can be considered weightless. This is explained in several sources including _The New Essential Guide to Weapons & Technology_ and _The Essential Guide to Warfare_ probably _Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force_ as well. Of course, technically, they have a little bit of mass. Then again, if we're being really technical, I suppose none of those authoritative text has any bearing on the lore in the new Disney Canon, so I suppose Disney could have changed it, but I myself only follow the old continuity.
@Carabas72
@Carabas72 5 лет назад
@@Cyfiero George Lucas always wanted them to be really heavy, originally. Nothing in the EU was ever close to canonical as far as Lucas was concerened. And these technical manuals clearly contradict what we see in the original trilogy, where lightsabers are clearly heavy, and where actors were actually told to act as if the things are heavy. Okay, they do seem to be completely weightles in the Prequels, but come on... It's the damn Prequels. Nothing in those things looks like it takes place in the same universe as the originals.

@@Carabas72 You can't just refute canon by pushing forth your personal desire to regard only the OT as an authoritative source. I've heard of people treating only G-canon (George Lucas canon) as the one and only authoritative source prior to the Disney take-over, but if you're even discounting the prequels, then you are even discounting Lucas's own canon. The reality is that George Lucas himself changed his mind, as authors of great works usually do, about elements of the lore over the years. Now, pushing aside George Lucas himself, these texts were considered by his company, Lucasfilms as their definitive guides to the SW canon, commissioned to reconcile any contradictions in lore between various SW media. Hence, SW canon was a tier-based system. The most puritanical, such as yourself, could choose to follow only George Lucas's vision and nothing but, that was the highest tier. The vast majority of fans followed the second tier, the vision of Lucasfilms, not just Lucas himself. But it doesn't make sense to abide by the film canon (which I'm assuming you do) yet arbitrarily exclude the prequels at any point you don't like.

***** does it need one? It seems that lightsabers are 'sticky' vs other lightsabers, sliding along another blade takes some effort. And obviously since they're conceptually based on the katana, and katanas don't have much of a guard either, it doesn't seem to be a big issue.
@MrZaranthan
@MrZaranthan 10 лет назад
entropy11 Katanas DO have a guard. It's small compared to the hilts on similarly-sized European swords, but it's enough to catch a light blade and force a clinch. Lightsabers, on the other hand, have NO guard whatsoever. Detail images of the handles indicate that the "blade" is flush with the rim of the emitter, and the design seems to prohibit putting any sort of reinforcement there. Good point on the stickyness, perhaps with The Force, it's trivial to make the blades catch and force your opponent to withdraw in order to move his weapon at all. Or, as so many fan videos have shown us, Perhaps the technique was more to gain a brief clinch and then just punch your opponent with the good old Mark I Fist. It worked in the Iron Age, it hasn't gone out of style since.

***** heres one thing.. now.. if the lightsaber blades dont have mass.. how would you block an attack? the blades would just pass through eachother.. Malkuth's Gaming i believe the theory is the photons in the 'blade' repel the opposing blade however if enough force is put forward they would pass thru each other, (dork moment) which is why vibroblades in their universe would work (in theory) because they are made effectively repel the photons of the lightsaber, allowing you to block with a metal blade. THAT said if they have guns and metal blades you would think the invention of metal shooting guns would have come first, so surely SOMEONE in the universe would think to carry one for jedi shooting. Lightsabers - "The weapon of a Jedi, not as clumsy as a blaster, an elegant weapon from a more civilized age" In this one line we can surmise that as a matter of general knowledge, the creation and use of lightsabers it was not. The very nature behind the it's use is reliant on ones ability to connect with or use the force, prior to Disney the lore behind them stems with ancient Jedi first using actual swords that they imbued/enchanted using the force, as well as "proto-sabers" which had a belt holster battery pack. Not to mention the crystals used are completely force atuned, so literally the weapon of a cult of space wizards and no one else lol Love what you do, keep doing it!

George Lucas has said that light-sabers do have mass in their blade, which is also why in the original trilogy they are often wielded with two hands, in the prequels they are a bit more mobile because those were trained jedi, unlike Luke in the first movie.

@sidewaysfcs0718
@sidewaysfcs0718 8 лет назад
+TheShreester all of that is speculation based on non-canon content, George Lucas said these things are heavy, i don't expect George Lucas to be an expert in physics, but i'm sure he meant they have mass, and if you look at the movies, the blades always seem to have mass. this is actually because they really had blades in their hands when shooting the film and then added the effects later, but since the movies are canon and you have to judge everything based on what you see, regardless of how it works, the lightsaber blade itself DOES have mass, otherwise the fighting in star wars would look completely different. Now, if we had to find a way to actually explain where the extra mass comes from, yeah good luck with that, there's no mechanism in the universe that can explain how an object can get spontaneously heavier in a vacuum. The only way you possibly could attempt to explain the extra mass would be to say that the air in the room gets ionized into plasma, but then the sabers couldn't work in a vacuum.
@GonzoTehGreat
@GonzoTehGreat 8 лет назад
sidewaysfcs0718 Yes, of course it's fan fiction! The truth is Lucas never gave it as much thought as fans do... He originally intended them to be called "Laser Swords" (which they're clearly not) then decided on "Light Sabers" instead because it sounded better (but is also clearly wrong...)! As you say, he's a film director not a scientist and these weapons are pure SciFi anyway, so there is no "proper" explanation. The props they actually used were irrelevant. It was George's direction that determined their "weight". They used similar props in both the OT and the PT but in the PT he directed the actors to wield them more energetically to portray their greater skill with the Force. Apparently Mark Hamill even wanted to use his saber one handed in RotJ to incorporate more variety into his movements but Lucas was adamant that Luke needed to keep both his hands on the weapon at all times. My point was that there are alternative (in universe) explanations for the blades being "heavy" other than actually having mass, which Lucas never stated.

This is excellent. All these issues are noted in the Star Wars books as well, one of the major aspects of learning to use a lightsaber is that it is a nigh-weightless weapon, relying almost entirely upon the strength of the user rather than any weight or mass provided by the weapon itself. They also have, as expressed in the video, a safety catch. This is attributed to why a lightsaber immediately deactivates if it gets dropped. The saber is only active while the safety catch is depressed, the moment it gets released the blade turns back off. Oh, and yes, a lead projectile firearm (called a 'slug thrower' in Star Wars) is considered to be far more threatening to a Jedi than a blaster. There's a novel where Master Yoda himself is forced into retreat because assassin droids armed with flechete round slug throwers are sent after him instead of standard blaster weaponry. Yoda over comes this later on by, ya know, being a telekinetic space wizard who can go all Neo The One on the droids and force the flechete to stop in midair. But yeah, all the issues you address are completely accurate to the issues discussed in the lore of the series as well. Very cool to see discussed by someone with actual proficiency in weaponry!

It's actually a thing in the expanded universe, that non-Jedi who attempt to use a lightsaber usually end up rather messily dead, or at least missing a limb or two. The weapons are almost completely impossible to use without the Force, but _with_ the Force, they become very useful as they have the capability to deflect incoming blaster bolts and can be "thrown" (really telekinetically guided) with the Force to turn them into a spinning, enemy-seeking doom blade. People who aren't Force-sensitive tend to use actual swords (usually vibro-weapons), sometimes made with a material that allowed them to safely parry a lightsaber. Though some Old Republic-era and earlier Sith favored actual swords due to the whole "feel of slicing through flesh with a metal blade" thing. They were kind of jerks. And that was my incredibly geeky post for the day. In tabletop games and some fiction I've written, I've had a jedi who didn't even carry a lightsaber. That doesn't make him any less of a Jedi. Is it an ultimate weapon? No. Far from it. Well the lightsaber could still be a saber, as it's essentially one edge, just in 360 degrees. Also, when it comes to metal swords in the Star Wars universe, it brings to mind the vibroblade or vibrosword, which are swords wrapped in a weave which allows the metal to vibrate at a frequency that matches the frequency of a lightsaber in most, if not all, cases. Of course, using a vibrosword over a lightsaber still has more drawbacks than promotions. And when it comes to lead, they would use the Force the same way Neo just stops the bullets in The Matrix.

Star Wars works on an odd idea of specialization. The idea being that as solid weapons (ballistic or melee) were advanced, armor that negated those types of attacks advanced as well. To counter this then, energy based weaponry advanced. And again the proper defenses to that type of weaponry advanced. The thing was that in alot of ways the two types of defenses were mutually exclusive (shielding generators were common and tuned to specific attack types). So you would have points in history where energy weapons were the only type of weapon people really used and so everyone just had energy specific defenses. So a guy who used a solid ballistic weapon would have had a huge advantage in that time period until people adapted. Regarding Jedi, yes a shotgun would be an unusual and effective weapon vs them much of the time. It's the same idea as to why Jango/Boba Fett used a Flamethrower so effectively vs Jedi. However a big part of why it would be so effective is that Jedi didn't really wear much armor. If they knew in advance that solid ballistic weapons were likely to be used they could wear armor to help defense against it (as they did during the Clone Wars for example). Jedi are capable of unleashing a "wave" of force which could negate a spread of shotgun pellets, it would just be a fairly impractical defense over a long term. They could also sweep their blade to negate a "swath" of the shotgun shot which might at the very least minimize the damage done to them (perhaps protecting their head/torso). In the end though, yes a shotgun would be a much more effective weapon than a blaster overall vs most Jedi.

When you mentioned shotguns, that is a very good point. I never thought about that. Even with the force, and even with the ability to deflect projectiles, the lightsaber would not be wide enough to defend against an entire spray of buckshot coming at you all at the same time. Ulfbert I actually heard someone mention offhand that shotguns were in Star Wars, but I wasn't sure if that was true or not since I'd never seen them before. So I guess they're in the expanded universe material then. I haven't seen much of Star Wars aside from the movies and a couple of the novels. Still, Skall raised a good point, and it makes you wonder why the stormtroopers in the third movie didn't try using shotguns instead of blasters when they executed Order 66. It's probably a pretty well-known fact in-universe that Jedi can deflect blaster shots.
@Drownedinblood
@Drownedinblood 10 лет назад
NailStrafer They were also still fighting a war so normal standard issue blaster rifles would be what they would have to work with. If shotguns started appearing en masse even though the open landscape environment along with fighting a droid enemy that is clad in armor and regularly uses shields clearly goes against their use, it would probably send signals to any competent Jedi that something was fishy. Also as you saw in the movie, Jedi can only deflect so many blaster shots before they get overwhelmed. Again, Jedi and Sith aren't invincible.
@UnknownSquid
@UnknownSquid 10 лет назад
NailStrafer Yeah, they exist, but mainly I always got the impression that they are deliberately overlooked and handwaved away. In a setting where these famous shot blocking baddasses exist, any and everyone that ever expected they might fight a jedi/sith would own the things. Alternative jedi killer weapons would include flame throwers, mini rocket/explosive shell guns, or even silly blaster pistols with three barrels built into a triangle pattern. Those battle droids being one example of an army built full well knowing they'd have to fight jedi, are weird in the same way as a real world army would be going to war fighting tanks without issuing a single troop a rocket launcher. Not that I mean to be too serious about this or anything. It's a fun setting specifically because it never tried to be sci-fi-entific.

NailStrafer I always figured that's why many Bounty Hunter figures carry more than a single blaster in combat (often with some concealed, moreover), in order to aim at different points of a single target, essentially rendering blocking the hit geometrically impossible in many scenarios, especially in close quarter combat. Pretty useful against Force users. Which reminds me that Jungo Fett seemed pretty confident in his ability to fight Mace Windu until his jetpack failed. These somehow severely unreliable machines seem to always be the downfall of this technology-relying family, hum...

That would be a very strange explanation. Never mind that I'm pretty sure there ARE some solid projectile weapons like rail guns, but I'm pretty sure that every single sith, lord or othwerwise, would have some kind of shotgun pistol up his sleeve if that was true. Moreover considering the common techlevel and that Anakin constructed a high-end podracer out of junk, im pretty sure every dedicated technically gifted youngster above the age of 12 could construct a makeshift gun in the next workshop by repurposing some spare parts. Nah, I'm pretty sure that soldiers are just too lazy to carry the weight of solid ammo. And jedi/sith would propably just use telekinesis to swipe them aside like annoying flies. Except Corran Horn maybe. Who would do.... other things.

One might say he's not properly "using" it and that he's already inherently "strong" with the Force, but Luke manages to activate and swing one around seconds after first encountering it in Episode IV. But at that point he had no actual training, with the specific weapon or the Force in general. I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments below, but apart from the obvious hazard, a lightsaber blade is supposed to have a "strong gyroscopic effect", so it's far from feeling like waving a flashlight. I'm sure Lucas just bet on The Rule of Cool and hadn't actually considered these issues, which makes us the lowest form of geeks there is for discussing it :D.
@SoraMatt
@SoraMatt 9 лет назад
***** the gyroscopic effect basically gives illusion to an opposite weight, but to most it just comes off as swinging a violently shaking vibrator with a flashlight that can kill you coming out of it. Those who are Force-sensitive translate this and move with the gyroscopic effect almost instinctively, giving that illusion of weight. But to a non-Force user, that has to be practiced.

In canon things here: -Lightsabers are in fact made of plasma and are enveloped in electromagnetic force fields that keep the heat relatively close to the blade. This prevents the wielder from being burned just by turning it on. -All Lightsabers have strong gyroscopic effects making a swing of one difficult to stop once it starts. This can be compensated for using The Force but most Lightsaber wielding combatants are not skilled enough in The Force to remove it substantially. The longer the Lightsaber blade is, the stronger it's gyroscopic effect. -Firearms that launch actual bullets are in fact banned in the Star Wars universe. This law has been in effect for a very long time and the manufacturing and existence if these weapons is very rare.

You're absolutely right about the traditional projectile firearms thing. That actually came up in a couple of games and books I know of. Noob jedi were torn apart by what they called "primitive projectile rifles" and while a master or more experienced jedi could escape or survive, their lightsabers were useless against them and could only rely on the Force. On the other hand, the elite troopers of the Republic wore heavy armor that repelled the shells and didn't need any unusual training to deal with that. So you just took a quick look at everyone's favourite geek weapon and saw right to its weakness. That would actually work even better than you might expect because no one in their galaxy would expect that unless they had experienced it already.

Well, I think a power weapon would work better than a lightsaber, just because you have a "real" weapon made of solid material underneath the power field, so its basicly a really sharp weapon that cuts through almost everything (and fullfills almost every kritique he mentioned regarding the lightsaber). But I was interested in the chainsword because it could be build and used today if wanted, all the tecnology that it requires already exists ;) About range weapons; the bolter is just a cal .45 assault rifle that shoots explosive shells, so yeah...talking about the other stuff like melta and plasma guns or laser rifle is kinda effectless since we know nothing about how they work.
@MyrdinAnnoth
@MyrdinAnnoth 10 лет назад
To be honest, i can imagine what the review would look like. He would have to factor in the fact that Space Marines are super humans, to be even able to wield such a thing (but what baffles me is the fact, that it is said that only SM are strong enough for these, yet look at Eldar Striking Scorpion or IG Commisars who use them as well.... maybe its some lighter version, since these guys have regular human strength). But yeh would be nice to hear about that, Considering the weapon defies everything a blade stands for (no slash and cut single motion, since it shreds like a chainsaw, you have to literally push it against the target and hold it there for long enough for it to do the job). Upping your comment, and hopefully Skall might do it eventually.

Sanguinius Hmm that makes me wonder how some of my favorite fictional weapons, the Zaku Heat Hawk and the Gouf Heat Saber would work, obviously scaled down to human size, they're more or less just heavy hacking weapons that heat up to very high temperature along the edge to cut metal armor, and as shown in 8th MS team, are effective when turned off as simple cutting weapons.
@WulfricUlfang001
@WulfricUlfang001 10 лет назад
MyrdinAnnoth Well it isn't just Striking Scorpions that make use of the weapon. Autarch do too. psychic augmentation, technology that completely outstrips Space Marines, vastly improved alloys and plastics that are lighter and stronger, also centuries upon centuries of training in their aspect of war. I can't speak much about Commissars, but in the case of Striking Scorpions and Eldar, Striking Scorpion suits are more accurately described in the lore as being similar to Terminator armor and act as an exo-skeleton increasing the user's strength, just with out the added hindrance of bulk and weight while also providing the same or better protection. For obvious balance reasons it isn't represented well in in-game rules to keep the models from becoming to expensive to field squads, otherwise an Exarch alone would be a starting price of their aspects Phoenix lords and no reason to include Phoenix lord models in the game.

What you talked about with lead projectiles actually happened recently in a Star Wars Comic. Anakin and Obi-Wan were on a planet that wasn't super advanced yet and they were using projectile based weapons. Obi-Wan blocked it and got molten metal on himself. I think the advantage of a light saber in the SW universe where almost everyone is using laser weapons is that it can block those bolts. If they are true lasers then that means they'd have to travel at the speed of light so the ability to block those has to either be pure luck or through force based precognition. So since so much of it comes down to a fantastical element I don't think practicality for a real person really enters into it. But hey that's just my two cents.

I seriously have no idea how a blaster can be better the a regular gun. Blaster: Can be deflected, a super shiny tracer begging your opponent to find and kill you, burn damage only (not sure about this one) Regular gun: Cannot be deflected, tracer rounds is optional, bullet expansion inside the body causing massive damage + optional incendiary rounds.
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 9 лет назад
Well it isn't discussed what specifically standard trooper armour does only that is has high kinetic weapon resistance, so then kinetic weapons do nothing in way of penetration. To be lethal in that case you would need projectiles with a large enough force to move the entire person... tank shells essentially. And that is where a plasma torch/gun comes in because that will still cut through every material at a high enough temperature. The only real issue in the movies was that those shots moved as if thrown by hand, about as accurate also.

red244 Blasters aren't supposed to be lasers, closer to a plasma weapon then anything else. Some theorize they are energy jacketed plasma rounds so as to not lose cohesion and why they look like lasers but don't behave like them. Also blaster bolts are supposed to move far closer then they appear. What you see, the glowy bits, are theorized to be either an after image of the blast being fired or a space age version of a tracer. A tracer is a round fired from guns to allow the shooter to see the trajectory of the fired shot. A tracer round fired out of a modern assault weapon looks far slower then it actually is but has the same speed as a standard round, which one cannot see in flight. Out of universe of course blasters look slow to give something for the audience to ohh and aww over. It'd be kinda boring for Jedi to block invisible lasers, there'd be no flashy bits.
@red244
@red244 9 лет назад
JounLord1 That is sort of the point, we are talking about individuals who have to achieve something practically impossible. There is only a single individual in the world today who is capable of reacting and predicting the trajectory of a speeding bullet. While this fits into the theme of a 'jedi' where only a few people in the universe can achieve what they do. The is a massive difference between a bullet and something moving close to the speed of light. In a controlled environment sure, you might be able to block/deflect something like that but in a combat situation your talking about 2-4 people shooting at you while your also trying to make sure you don't do something stupid. But that's just star wars and it's a franchise I grew up with. So I really don't care that much if the sci-fi and science do not co-exist very well.
@lolroflundxd

MsSomeonenew Good answer. Generally armor is the way future scenarios are explained in which guns are not as effective. While in starwars this allows slow moving projectiel weapons to shine (which is honestly cooler to watch, because our heroes can dodge them instead of just never getting hit (even though we also have that :D)), it is mostly used to explain melee in an age were shooting weapons are a possibility. Which is also cooler then seeing real world guns. Now my problems with Starwars weapons/armor right now is why Lightsabers do not have crossguards (fixed in the newest one :D), and why force/lightsaber users do not wear armor/shields (ok shields are in a way uncool so I understand that) made of Lightsaber resistent material. I am thinking about arm/leg protectors. It doesn't have to be heavy handed with full armors/helmets/shields which would slow down fights. Slight/light arm/leg protection would allow them to keep with the rule of cool, and incorporate more fast paced fightingstyles that use kicks and the arms (which they already do, but without protection).

I´d like to come back to the issue of the light saber not having weight: Even if it doesn´t, the heated blade will probably encounter some form of air resistance when swung, hence the infamous sound effects in Star Wars. That being said, as you pointed out correctly, the lightsabers as displayed in Star Wars must require a ludicrous amount of energy to operate. This means for one, the power source/light generator will likely get really hot, so putting that in the handle seams not very wise. Even more dangerously, pumping that much energy into "light" would mean that the saber would not be one of the trademarked color pallet for light sabers (or uniformly red for the dark side), but blindingly bright, and even more UV radiation than visible light. Basically what I am saying is, you would be toasting yourself just by switching it on, and microwaving your eyeballs instantly. (On a side note, if we are to believe the colors of the light blades, the siths should be uniformly handicapped since red light is the least energetic part of the visible spectrum. May just be they keep loosing because of some bad corporate design decisions.)

1: Heat is caused by inefficient use, that is why in most cases, heat is treated as waste energy; However Lightsabers use Diatium, an extreamly powerful energy source, meaning that you don't have to use it to the point of overheating to use a Lightsaber. Not only that but pretty much all energy emitted by the power cell is converted (in a probably pseudo-science fashion) into Plasma. 2: The colour of the "Light" is due to the crystals used to focus the energy into a beam, It is also what makes it powerful. The reason Sith are commonly seen with Red Lightsabers is due to the fact that the crystals they use are synthetically made thus causing them to be a blood red colour.

The lightsaber isn't a laser, and the power source is just assumed to be ludicrously beyond what modern technology is capable of.

Ha1v3rs0n So the lore goes. However, until at least theoretically proven possible to have an efficiency that high, I call this description a variant of a Perpetuum Mobile, and dismiss the very notion of it. Same goes with the crystals. Just because the lore says something, doesn't make it any more valid. As I mentioned earlier, you would not be able to have a particular color, but even so, red light still is less energetic than green light, and blue light is the most energetic - in the visible spectrum. That all being said, I still like the idea of light sabers as a fantasy weapon - they are stylish, cool and generally awesome. I just cannot see the physics work out though, sorry.

Hey dude, thanks for doing a vid on this topic. I thought I should just mention something with regards to the weight of a light saber's "blade'. It's a common misconception that it is in fact weightless, but it has been discussed in a couple of the comics but more notably on the recent TV animated series Star Wars - Rebels. The kyber crystal inside the mechanism that powers the whole thing is highly in tune with the force, which is why jedis are so responsive to it and vice-versa. Being the case - what it does instead of bearing weight, is create an amount of resistance against movement. Striking, swinging, blocking, everything is affected by that. The best example I can give is to imagine how astronauts exercise in space to maintain muscle mass and fitness when there is a lack of gravity. That's kinda how the light saber works and does indeed give the user a sense of "weight". It's only when they master the sense of flow between their own control of the force and the kyber crystal's resonance that they exhibit a more floating kind of movement to their attack and defence. They have to be in sync and focused. It's the same reason when you see two opponents locking lightsabers that the "blade" hums brighter and louder when they are pushing back harder. It's not muscles. It's the force the jedi/sith is channeling through the blade to redirect its resistance onto the opponent. Like any weapon, it's the years of training that makes the wielding of it look effortless. Though mass is not technically the correct term to apply, there is definitely a sense of heft and physical presence to the weapon from pommel to tip that is more than purely visual. Bearing in mind we're discussing something purely fictional (for now). I hope that sheds some light on the matter : ) P.S. I also know this video was posted prior to the sources I mentioned, but thought the updated info might be useful for some followers.

Light saber battles are cool, but you really need to not over think them otherwise they really start to not make any kind of logic. There is just so much non sense. - I don't know much about sword fighting, but considering light sabers do not appear to need momentum to cut, striking a light saber is useless. I'm pretty sure it would be pretty easy to just block your light saber against the light saber's opponent and then let your light saber slip toward the hands of you opponent and cut his fingers/wrist/forearms (especially since light sabers don't have hand guards). - Assuming light sabers are weightless, why don't they make longer ones ? They could even choose the size during the battle and use this as an advantage. - Jedis can shoke people. Well, at least sith lords or whatever. What's the point of fighting with a light saber when you can choke ? If you can choke, you can manipulate body parts. If you can manipulate body parts, why do they not block their opponent arms ? - Same remark with hand lighting bolt. Who needs a light saber if you can just point your hands out and electocute them. - Same remark with freaking telekinesis. Why not use like a dozen lightsabers at the same time ? Why not turn off your opponent light saber pushing the button with the force ? Why not pulling off the power source ?

Although there are some problems in star wars that definitely can't be explained most of your points are explained (just not in the movies). Remember there are tons of books and comics that are considered cannon that builds upon the movies and are canon. Not going to access all your points but here's a few exemple : -They do make sabers with different sizes. Vader's saber actually has two different lengths that he can switch between, as to surprise or confuse his foes. -Choking/force push and other force tricks sure can be useful against people who aren't force sensitive or even against those that are as long as they are not trained/used to face people who use the force, but it is way less effective against seasoned force users that actually knows how to resist those attacks. This isn't all that well represented in the movies but in the books or comics you can see quite a few instance where a jedi literally shrugged force lightning performed by a young darksider that couldn't overpower their force shield as if it was nothing at all or even force users that tried to force push their opponent just to get destabilized from the recoil of their inefficient attack.
@TekedixXx
@TekedixXx 10 лет назад
Imnospy You also have to consider that; and this is Canon, Jedi and Sith can see and sense into the future using the force. Not far, but they still can, and thats why no one has just slid down and cut someone's arm, because the defender would know that was coming and compensate. Also, Jedi and Sith are masters of the force and are surrounded by it. Just like how you can't persuade those of strong minds, you cannot manipulate a Jedi or a Sith, kinda like how Master Yoda stopped the force lighting in Episode 3.

There is a safety mechanism. There are pressure sensors on the hilt, so that if the lightsaber is dropped or flies out of a grip, the lightsaber turns off. It also doesn't turn on if pressure is not applied. Sometimes the force is used to apply pressure to the lightsaber so it can be thown.

I think there are several advantages to a lightsaber over a conventional sword: 1) Compact storage. You can't keep a full-length sword in your pocket. 2) Ability to deflect projectiles. If the blades have some mass (which from the way they swing them in the movies, they must), this would even work against lead bullets. Although, a shotgun blast would be pretty impossible to block completely. 3) Assuming the blades have mass, you wouldn't have the problem of a weightless blade.

***** Well, collapsable batons can't cut through things, and they can break much easier. And they can't block projectiles at all really. And most collapsable batons don't have a 3 foot blade, as lightsabers do. Those are some major differences, although I must agree that the concept is largely the same. I like lightsabers the way they are. They're simple, elegant, and highly effective in the hands of a Jedi. Lightsabers also aren't lasers. That should be obvious since they can clash with each other, as lasers cannot. As for a shield, the Force covers that. Moving like a prehensile limb? The Force. Blinding pilots? Why not mind control them...with the Force? Cut a building in half? Star Killer could bring down an entire Star Destroyer with the Force. I'm sure he could do the same to a building. Basically, the Force covers everything you could want. The lightsaber does the simple stuff. There's no need to make the lightsaber which is already a very effective weapon more complicated than it needs to be. And within the Star Wars universe, those things aren't possible due to the properties of the crystals used to power them. Except for whips. That did happen.
@Hauptseite
@Hauptseite 8 лет назад
+Decay Basically what ShadeSlayer said was what I was going to say; everything you're asking of a lightsaber to be upgraded to can already be accomplished somehow via the force. Shields, blinding, telekinesis, lightning, mind tricks, etc, etc. It's funny you mentioned moving things around with the mind because there's a character named Darth Traya that used three lightsabers all controlled telekinetically. The force is truly limitless. The lightsaber seems more like a simple tool or extension of the force user. Really, if someone said I could have a lightsaber or the force and only one, I would pick the force every single time. More options, more subtle, more destructive, and far safer than a "laser sword" that I could accidentally hack off my own limbs with. Now imagine a force user that wields firearms. Kyle Katarn anybody? I love the Jedi Knight series.

In the old Expanded Universe it was said that there were gyroscope-like mechanisms inside the hilt to simulate the blade having weight/mass when the lightsaber was activated. I don't know if that's still a thing in the canon, but considering all of the lightsaber duels that you see in the films look as though the blade has some weight im going to believe that this is still a feature of the lightsaber.

I might be mistaken, but, I'm sure I read somewhere that any Jedi with at least a modicum of training in the Force can block or deflect standard projectiles with just their power alone.. The reason this doesn't work with blaster bolts is something to do with it just being a mass of energised particles as opposed to a solid object, meaning the Jedi cannot "catch" it with the Force.. There was a technique that could be used to deflect blasters (I forget the name of it), but I think only really high level masters can pull it off, hence the need for lightsabers. Don't quote me on any of this though.

For a safety, there could be a pin attached to the belt that holds it so it can only be activated when taken off the belt. Or if it is attached magnetically, there could be something where it can only turn on in the absence of a strong magnetic field.

For those saying that Jedi could dodge real bullets, that actually isn't the case. Plasma weapon ammo moves slower than real bullets, and in the Star Wars extended universe there are numerous bounty hunters that specialize in Jedi hunting that use "slug throwers" (the Star Wars universe's way of saying normal guns) in their hunts. Its not just that most jedi are to slow to dodge bullets, the other advantage real bullets provide is that they cannot be deflected/reflected like blaster shots can, and even though a lightsaber will melt a bullet, the molten metal is still going to be moving in the same direction at the same velocity it was while solid.
@chillbro1010

the main point, why normal bullets aren´t used that much against jedi is because they have a mass, that means, that it is farly easy to manipulate their flight direction and speed with the help of the force

There is some lore about a substance that could resist even against light sabers. But it was rare as hell, so it's not exactly a good material to use. On light sabre blade weight. The in-game lore of the Jedi Knight 2 game implies that the length, density and weight of the blade can be adjusted, depending on the situation's need, or the user's style (longer heavy 2 hand style with big swings, versus a shorter 1 hand style with quick swings for e.g.). So they do seem to have weight in the blade, as far as that 'lore' goes. And on that point, photons do have mass.

In the Star Wars expanded universe, conventional firearms (known in universe as "slowthrowers") are used on several occasions to kill light saber wielders such as Jedi (makes you wonder why the Jedi don't use firearms against the Sith.) They're also portrayed as being far more reliable in harsh environments than blasters. Apparently, the only reason firearms aren't more widely used is because of the skill required to compensate for their ballistic trajectory compared to blasters whose bolts are not affected by gravity. Some of the expanded universe material covers a lot of these points, such as: - Safeties. Many Jedi had two switch safeties on their lightsabers, or grip based safeties that would shut the lightsaber off automatically if no one was holding it. Others put the on switches inside the lightsaber housing so that only someone with telekinesis could actually flip it. - Of course lightsabers can block and deflect blaster bolts, which is the most common projectile they'd have to worry about. You don't have to worry about dudes with guns so much when you can send their shots right back at them. - Slugthrowers, the Star Wars word for normal gunpowder guns, are an extremely effective Jedi-killing weapon since they can't be deflected by lightsabers. People who expect to fight Jedi will often pack slugthrowers for exactly that reason.
@revdraco

Lightsabers do have some sort of deadman switch on them. . . note how, whenever a Jedi (or Sith) is disarmed, the lightsaber turns itself off. It could be something as simple as a sensor which detects the electrical charge of the wielder's skin. This would also protect against accidental activation.

Greivous may not have had access to the force, but he didn't really use the sabers like a jedi would anyway. As for the OP; Dean is on the right track, A lightsaber has to be held in the 'activated' state by the user and when it's released it deactivates. In the case of saber throws the Jedi/Sith uses the force to keep the saber active and guide it through the air and back to their grip.

What I like about a lightsaber, taking everything you say here into account, is that you indeed have to be a jedi or sith: a super highly trained and force attuned person, to make use of this weapon effectively. I hope the new films put a new emphasis on that, because the Force is an essential aspect of making the weapon work, and I really like that. It deepens the link between the warrior and the weapon. As dumb as the thing would be in ANY other world in ANY other person';s hand, it makes complete sense in a Forcewielder's. Not many fictional stories have warriors/weapons like that in them.

Finally someone understands its a niche weapon for a very particular fighting style! Honestly, lightsabers are more glorified sticks that forcewielders poke at eachother until one of them loses concentration and presents an opening. With the added benifit of being a "sword wall" to block blaster fire. Again all the people like "just us the force to kill people" what if someone with the force stops it? they could walk up and punch you cause you're defenseless!

Connor Hill "Honestly, lightsabers are more glorified sticks that forcewielders poke at eachother until one of them loses concentration and presents an opening. With the added benifit of being a "sword wall" to block blaster fire." Exactly this, it seems to me very few people realise, that is in my pov anyway, that lightsabers are weapons not just made by jedi, they're meant FOR jedi - forcewielders. It's primarily an extension of the defensive capability of the force, not it's offence, which is why imo it fits that force lighting is of a Sith's design: it's using the Force offensively. You can do that with a saber, but actually using the force is offensively much more effective and so far mostly Sith use it, and most battle moves of the force are primarily Sith moves, which is fitting. When Obi-Wan in EpII says 'this weapon is your life' I always took that as symbolism that it meant the Force is your life. Your life is to be a forcewielder, a jedi, and it's exemplified, it's embodied, focussed and kindled in that weapon. In all its aspects. In how breaches everything, yet is only truly what it is supposed to be when guided by the Force. So no, if you're a normal guy and not a spiritual forcewielder, a lightsaber isn't for you, and just a hassle or even hazard. I never liked how many people disregard the spiritual/telepathic element in these films, because ultimately, the setting might be westerny, but the story is largely about the Force and it's wielders. Star Wars are spiritual films shaped into a sci-fi world. It is a world in which everything and one can have a place, but when it concerns forcewielding, that's a metaphysically tied affair, even the material saber duelling of it is in essence a metaphysical battle, and I think on that plane the battle is decided. Is the advantageous that we get to see long awesome battles? Hell yes. I also feel like Bioware's games got this point across very well. I wish more star wars fans knew it.

Silrian777 It's almost like they took inspiration from buddhist/japanese culture and western influence on said culture. Too bad most people only see a movie as eye candy and not a visual work of literature full of allusions and nuances. "huehuehue, yoda flipin all cray cray after doddling around like an old man all the movie!" You could probably write several books on the "reveal" of yoda kickin ass during the sidious fight compared to literature. A light-saber, may be a possible weapon as Kyle Hill demonstrates on the channel "The Nerdist" in his show "Because science" Where he actually shows the probability and theory and current known world technology's. Rather instead of it being a photonic blade, it would actually be a plasma charged fine thin rod that extends from the hilt. So picture an old phone where it had an antennae which extended from the phone. If you were to make a rod like this, only as thin as the filament of a lightbulb, one could possibly charge it enough that it would resemble a lightsaber.
@bubbles8871
@bubbles8871 5 лет назад
I was thinking about the weight problem too on my own. You also see in the movies when two sabers collide they bounce off each other and the user uses that momentum for their next swing. take a look at fencing instead, where the sword is balanced on the handle as well as the blade and they always keep it out in front of them instead of swinging them around
@opmdevil
@opmdevil 10 лет назад
The safety fedature when extending could be constructed with modern technology. All you had to do was motion tracking and chip that could figure what direction the extending bit would be pointing. If the handle would have sensors to detect the carriers body (the jedi cloak), you could program the thing to disengage when it's pointing to such an angle that it would hit the carrier. Some of that would be doable with wii-controller.

Ember Hacking is only an issue if it has some kind of network property unless you mean a physical device that would ruin the safety feature but then again, you could make it explode at the moment of activation. Unlimited power source equals probably a good explosion. What comes to electric safeties, they were yesterday's news a couple of years ago. If some one wants to argue that they might be unreliable, tell me example of a sci-fi movie that had a malfunction in these futuristic devices...

As I understand it, from an energy perspective the blade is continually recycled energy so long as it's active and not interacting with anything solid, like an object. It just loops the same energy over and over again, basically allowing a lightsaber to remain active effectively indefinitely. Once the blade bites into something else, however, it begins expending energy to renew the power of the blade. The resistance the lightaber has against cutting through the other object also provides a sense of weight to the lightsaber, which is why, in Phantom Menace for example, Qui-Gon has to push pretty obviously against the hilt of the blade to get it to continue cutting through the Trade Federation blast door. For some of the other points you raised: yes, you run the risk of the blade itself cutting into you (like it showed in TFA in the Kylo Ren/Finn fight), but you also have the ability to do that to your opponent. And really, and significant force applied against your blade pushing it back towards your body while wearing robes like a Jedi's could cut and wound you- a lightsaber just does that much more effectively. Also, one of the cooler things that the Expanded Universe (sorry... Legends) material gave us was some really cool uses of the Force. One of the cinematic's for Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO, showed Satale Shan (Grand Master of the Jedi Order about 3500 years before the OT) using the Force to block a lightsaber blade WITH HER BARE HANDS, saving herself from being impaled on her enemies lightsaber. With the ability to do that, half-swording would be fairly easy to utilise, I think. Additionally, lightsabers aren't the only way a Jedi can block or dodge something. Thinking like that severely limits a Jedi's choices in combat. For example, they could simply dodge out of the way of a lead bullet, especially since there is quite a notable aesthetic difference between practical firearms (or slugthrowers, as they're called in Star Wars- yes, they do have them) and blasters, enough to recognise what they're facing if it's brought to bare, even if they are rather rare weapons. Finally, I'm just going to point something out. Jedi call them lightsabers. Uneducated people like Anakin, who were born in the Outer Rim and thus aren't fully informed about everything, call it a laser sword, yet Qui-Gon doesn't correct him on the actual term. I'm pretty sure 'lightsaber' isn't meant to be taken literally- just like it isn't a saber (more akin in form, design and the OT fighting style to a katana and samurai fighting techniques, really), it isn't made of light. I don't really see how this conclusion is difficult for people to come to, but oh well. Good video overall.

Hey Skallagrim! Just wanted to quickly bring something up here. Both you an Metatron mentioned how lightsaber blades are massless; however, there's a scene in Revenge of the Sith when General Grievous ignites his lightsabers and his arms clearly drop, indicating the blades do seem to have some sort of mass. If I'm not mistaken (which I very well may be) in the Star Wars canon they also resist movement, and feel a bit like moving a stick through fluid.
@JayMannStuff
@JayMannStuff 10 лет назад
It should also be noted that the "laser blasts" in Star Wars are slow enough that you can see their travel path and dodge them. That's not the case with lead bullets, though. So even if a Jedi's reflexes allow him to dodge or deflect "laser blasts", that may not be enough to help against dodging or deflecting bullets. Plus the whole molten lead thing you said. (And yes, the whole "Jedi's intuition" and being able to "feel" the immediate future.)

Psycho Well, if Star Wars respected our Physics, yes, their laser blasts would travel at the speed of light. But in the movies you can see their "laser blasts" (hence the quotation marks) traveling at about the same speed an arrow fired from a modern composite bow would. Thus, Star Wars "laser blasts" travel so slowly you can see the light they emit as they travel through the air. Thus, the "laser blasts" can't be light if they travel so slow you can see their movement, and if they emit light (and thus are not made entirely from light traveling in a single direction, as the definition of laser implies).
@JayMannStuff
@JayMannStuff 10 лет назад
johannes nordeng No. It just means that Jedi's in the Star Wars universe have an "extra sense" about what is likely to happen in the next few seconds. If you watch Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope, you'll have a good sense for what I mean, when Luke Skywalker is training under Obi-wan Kenobi with the automated robot, while wearing a helmet with the blast shield down, and trying to defend against it using the lightsaber his father (Anakin) used to own. You can also see some of this in Episode I - The Phantom Menace, explaining how/why Anakin at such a young age could pilot a Pod Racer even though a normal human's reaction time wouldn't be enough, yet somehow he could tell what was going to happen in just a little bit.
@JayMannStuff
@JayMannStuff 10 лет назад
Psycho It's alright, dude. I understand. It's just weird how movie Physics work when compared to our own, and how that sometimes makes discussions (especially online ones) much trickier. It'd probably be better to describe Star Wars' "laser blasts" as "luminous projectiles" instead, since they do seem to behave more like shiny projectiles with a lot of heat rather than a beam of light.
