Honestly I felt the Matrix's return was pretty well explained. What I had more of a problem with was the writing and casting. NPH and Groff should've had each other's roles. And Smith should've actually been a CGI 1999 Hugo Weaving coming to the end.

The Matrix "games" that Thomas Anderson "made" are just footage from the movies, correct. But the opening footage, with new Trinity and new Morpheus/Smith is from a Modal, a program used to evolve AI. Anderson creates it to unconsciously create a new Morpheus to "find Neo" so he can be freed from this constant treadmill of a world he's trapped in. "So Deja Vu, and yet everything's wrong." "Why use old code to mirror something new?" That's why Morpheus/Smith is already suspicious of this world he's living in (cause the Modal is designed to evolve AI), and that's why they look different (cause they're new programs made from old Matrix code), and that's how Bugs and Seq are able to spot it (cause they were 'phishing', and it was familiar enough code to investigate).

I'm with both Kermode and Maso... It either needed more time via a series to fully flesh out its ideas, or it needed to be a super-honed and to the point short film. Without any action. But I cant see it being greenlit without any action, and the perfunctory action seems to be part of the point, which sadly guts a lot of the fun. As Kermode said tho, the well is empty, I hope there arent any further sequels.

@shaid1111
@shaid1111 2 года назад
I'll say this you clearly got the point of the movie unlike a lot of reviews I've seen. However I can't agree with you on the action, it's not the first one obviously but I thought there were some real fun action, especially compared to a lot of movies these days where every action scene is "Hero runs away, until they figure out what to do then beats the villain in one move". I also think the lack of gun action was kinda cool as a response to the movie bros who quoted "Guns, lots of guns" for years. Like especially how Neo and Trinity don't touch a single gun the entire movie. All their attacks are kung fu and the power of love. The chases I thought were all really good, but I agree probably the weakest action in the series. But that is not saying much considering how incredible the action in the other movies were, and that this was shot at the height of covid. Like compare the action or honestly any of the cinematography here to No Way Home which also was shot during covid. It's freaking night and day difference. Matrix looks SO much better.
@MarkHWillson
@MarkHWillson 2 года назад
The problem is, there were lots of guns. In fact, there were way too many unnecessary shots and sequences of mindless gun action. So the message was muddled. I applaud the film for what it tried to do, but it didn't stick the landing imo.

What is this alternative reality where Poirot has a gun?? He is extremely non physical. In Death on the Nile though the murderer has to do their murder at that time and they believe they can fool Poirot. There is this whole theme of doom and inevitability in the book. I like the original book it has a very strong character conflict, a love triangle, in the heart of it and I wonder if the movie is going to acknowlege or use the commentary on class and racism which many adaptations ignore (they are interesting and I feel like an adaptation could do much more with how the plot plays with prejudice)

I love the thought of Matrix Res 2 tackling the media and politicians of the world whereby those characters mirror our reality, while the free world begins to respond to the uncertainty within the Matrix and bringin dual challenges to Neo and Trinity meaning instead of laoding kung fu, they load up leadership programmes, spiritual programmes and the like. If its less action and more clear and eye opening communication tying it all to our day to day... would somehow elevate it all. But am self amused dork with this stuff

The problem with the Matrix and a big part of why the message people are taking away from this is so polarized is that it uses allegory, a rhetorical device that isn't very well suited to film and just comes off as "bad satire". I really enjoyed the movie and got a lot out of it specifically because I don't know squat about cinematography but have 2 English degrees, so I watch movies from a dialog focused perspective. In allegory, you're trying to make everything a stand in for a concept or an idea and the expectation is that the "reader" is going to draw on personal experience and context to morph your characters into the things they represent. It's a lot to ask even with the written word forcing you to create mental pictures, but a baffling choice for visual media. It's complex and hard to explain without going into a lot of foundational stuff, but I'll try. As one example, Trinity often acts as a stand in for woman who have traditionally masculine interests. While this works as just her character (we learn that she like working on motorbikes) you're expected to view her actions and statement in the greater context. The line "that's for using kids" has absolutely nothing to do with the new Smith using Trinity's actual kids to try and stop her, but is commentary on how the idea that you're worthless if you don't have children is used to force women to suppress their masculinity. That whole conversation is completely different, nuanced, and extremely well written when apply that type of allegorical thinking to everything being said by all 3 of them ... but that's almost easier to do if you just close your eyes and ignore all the visual elements reminding you that these are real people you've built a connection with over 4 movies. If we were reading the dialog as a short story in a 3rd year English class, I think the almost universal opinion would be that it is absolutely brilliant. But we're not ... we are listening to that dialog as part of a movie franchise that built it's reputation on incredible visuals and action. I tend to side with the idea that you should never judge something based on how it didn't live up to your expectations, but this a really extreme case. It's asking more of it's audience then I think it has any right to, and in that way it's hard to see it as anything other then a failed experiment, even given the fact that I personally really enjoyed it.

I have to admit I was disappointed. Not so much with the general storyline but with the execution. The fight scenes were generally lacking. Lots of shaky cam. There were lots of times that the good guys should have been shot by guards/police/agents. It's fine in Rambo or Commando, but having the 'bad guys' fire machine guns down a corridor just shouldn't be survivable. This didn't happen in the first 3 movies. None of the crew felt like they were in danger of dying, even when completely surrounded. The death of Mouse in the first film was an important plot point that was important to the feeling of the film. The meta-ness of the warner bros. sequel talk got cringey. What was the big opportunity that The Analyst gave them? It seemed like the only thing was to rescue Trinity which Niobe was against. I kept waiting for another reason to go in other than her rescue and there wasn't anything. She was against saving anyone from the Matrix because she didn't want to reestart the war but then she okayed a mission to rescue the number one VIP. I'll be interested to know if I missed anything there. It had so much potential which in some ways makes it worse...

My theory is Lana didn't want to make a sequel because there is nothing to say about the matrix at this point other that the meta joke we all tell ourselves that we are in the matrix, so I think she made a movie that doesn't really hurt Neo or Trinity in any way because that would be disrespectful to her older movies, but the studio is telling her they'll make it if she doesn't, so she makes a mediocre uneven movie so everyone hates it therefore it can't be sequelize, she's in control of these characters just as much as they are in control of the matrix at the end so she says how the movie will go and it's a movie about trinity and consent, the most "woke" thing a movie can do now is make the main character a girl, so why not Trinity. And it would make sense that Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss would be on broad for that type of movie to put the matrix to bed. I think the movie is uneven for sure, but on purpose and on our side, it's a better movie when it's meta

This. Its stated in the film too. The sequel is being made whether the creator likes it or not, so why not just go for it and make comments on how reductionist the concept of insisting on more is, how much its missing the point to just go on about the action :)

Then maybe none of the Wachowskis should’ve touched them again and a new fresh faced director could’ve gotten their chance to make a good movie instead of purposefully making a bad movie. What a ridiculous thing to happen if that’s true.

@@Jack_Ss it's their movie, they have every right to say what goes, and if they don't want more sequels being made on something they worked on by someone else and still have a say then I see nothing wrong. They only wanted the first one but were asked to make more and everyone hated those because it wasn't the first one. But because Warner Brothers owns rights they felt the need to step in and end it there while making the suits happy that a sequel was made, it's all in the movie

I was quite excited for the Matrix: the new Matrix but I was left very disappointed, the story was fine and I liked that it was more human centric, more emotional than the original trilogy and I really enjoyed how meta it went but WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE ACTION SCENES? Didn't they have enough time to train the actors to do kung fu, why was all fights filmed waaaayy to close, why was there sooo much shaky cam and why did it fee like they were cutting around the actors and why oh why oh why was Neo just pushing air? All in all, it's okay.

@@toomuchtv6741 Okay mr. smarty pants, where did I say it's about the action? Criticizing the worst part of a film, in this instance the action, does not make my point "it's just about the action", like I said I enjoyed the emotional core of the film which I felt was missing from the original trilogy, story had many interesting parts that were unfortunately mostly glossed over and the plot just rushed past them, which was disappointing. So you're literally like the people hooked up in the matrix except your matrix is just breathing your own farts and suffering from perpetual lack of oxygen in your brain and methane poisoning.

@@toomuchtv6741 And talking about the action, I don't think you understand how big of an impact the original Matrix had on western action films, how revolutionary it was, this film having badly shot and edited and choreographed action is a damn shame, why even have Neo say "I still know kung fu" when you're mostly just having him push air with his hands, I get that this was filmed during the pandemic and they most likely didn't have enough time to train the actors to actually do all the cool shit they were doing in the original trilogy, but Lana could've at least tried to make the action a little bit more clear, so that the viewers could understand what the fuck is going on (YES I'M TALKING TO YOU MEROVINGIAN FIGHT SCENE) if you were pleased with the action in this film, then that's fine, you like badly shot and edited action and that's most audiences nowadays but to me, it's such a shame to see such an influental action director deliver such disappointing fight scenes.
@tappajavittu

@@toomuchtv6741 And one more point, yes, in western film canon the Matrix IS all about the action, I don't think you were old enough to witness the hype and admiration for THE ACTION in the Matrix when it came out, the admiration and appreciation for THE ACTION in the Matrix that has continued to this very god damn day. All the action scenes in the Matrix are in service of the story, not just something that happens cause it has to happen like in this film it seemed to be, no weight in the fights, no deeper reason for them to happen, no nothing, just mindless, badly directed action for the sake of action. Personally I would've be happy if this film had no action at all, just long meta commentary conversations about how the Matrix impacted our world and the world of the Matrix, but what we got was bad action and an okay film with pretty on the nose themes and meta commentary.
