Kenny, Good candidate for "Just rolled in". Love your podcast!

Ken, I used to work on just the lowest of the low income people's cars and it was common to weld in the ball joints on Chevys. Also, it looks like that truck has seen some runs over a plowed field more than once by the looks of the suspension parts moving all over the place. But: My little brother had an AMC Gremlin that had loose eccentric adjusters on both sides. They were on the lower control arms inboard, and they were so loose that you could turn them with your fingers. He was in college at the time, so I got Dad to spring for tires brakes shocks and exhaust to get it somewhat back to safe. My little brother drove his AMC Gremlin everywhere and never knew there was a problem. What's that saying about "Bliss?" ben/ michigan

I had the exact same thing once. The customer didn't want to spend the money & repair it. Ok. Didn't see it for about 6 - 9 months. It came back. with funny noise & oil leak. Turns out the guy drove it until the pulley went through the timing cover. Then he replaced it himself. he put a pringles can lid in the hold left by the pulley with silicone & drove it. That was the oil leak. The piece cut out by the pulley had fallen down inside the cover & stayed there until enough of it had worn away & it got caught by the chain & wiped out the tensionor & all the chain guides under the cover. What a job THAT turned out to be.

I have a 81 Dodge Diplomat that the chain rubbed thru at the bottom of the cover. I just cleaned it with brake clean and put RTV Silicone and cardboard over the hole. That was in 2001. It's still that way.

5.34 valve in the V10 are not garbage. But people do not understand that anytime the oil starts to congeal up and plug up the engine it destroys those engines the way you keep from that happening is about a week before you're ready to do an oil change you put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil into the engine and run it for a week. Anywhere from three to seven days worth of driving. Doesn't matter you can actually put a half a quart or quarter in it and run it that way all the time if you'd want. It keeps those oil passages that are needed to operate especially that cam phaser clean. It keeps the lifters clean, keeps everything in that engine that must stay clean know things like the Rings from seizing up. Greatest things ever made for maintaining an automobile. You can do the same thing with a quart of transmission fluid. You can run a quart of transmission fluid and the engine along with your regular motor oil whenever you change oil and it'll keep the inside of the engine spotless.

Good video, those from trucks really get beat-up. Nothing wrong with adding 2 tack welds on the ball joint.Ive done it on drive shafts along time ago to help hold the caps on a drive shaft and it lasted 10 years before the grease ran out and need a new shaft.

I spent many years in Maui, in Hawaii operating a two way radio shop. Some of my customers were HC&S, the biggest, Wailuku Sugar, shut down and they built houses in the property and Lahaina Sugar, they had their own tech and I just got the jobs he didn't want to tackle. These trucks, mostly Fords ran almost their whole life in the Maui, much and mud, coated everywhere with dirt. I give the mechanics credit that had to work on them. The mechanics and purchasing agent were the ones that dealt with me. A lot of them had the old Motorola remote mount radios. Basically big boat anchor type transceivers that had to mount behind or sometimes under the seat. When a removal and reinstall came up, pulling the radios out of the filth was tough, but because they were usually going back into a brand new truck, the install was easier, but I had to do some heavy duty cleaning of each radio, cables and control head. I did the cleanup and maintenance check and tune up. But the radio had to look almost new or the person driving the new truck would have a fit, which I don't blame them. First of all the radios were like thirty years old and new ones were the ideal situation, but the purchasing agents wanted to save money and reuse the radio for another few years. This truck brings back those memories.

MANY of the old Chryslers had Screw-in Ball-joints. I had a '75 Charger that did. Except for needing a 4' long pipe on the wrench, I had no problem replacing it! Ahhhh - Memories of my teens!

A hose with a bubble breach in it's lining can cause mushy pedal that's not trapped air. Of course inspect every part in the system and both axles if you guarantee brake work. Speed sensors on the vans used to cause the ABS to act hyper. They would be balled up with a wad of shavings from differential wear on our local work vans.

Good advice on pulling a wheel. A dealer once told a GF her car needed brakes. I bought parts before I pulled a wheel, to find pads around 80%. Never trusted that dealer again.

Free Legal Advice: If he sells the truck to someone and they drive it on the road and a repair that would be inappropriate for a car used on the road causes an accident, that repair may come back to haunt you and your insurance company. If he drives it to the gas station, he's putting you at risk of having to answer for a non-road worthy repair. I'd always fix things to road safety standards. (I'm not criticizing your repair. I'm just describing the realities of civil litigation)

Kenny I love ya my friend but I think Chevy screwed up when they made the 5.3 with the DOD FMS in them. We have 2 suburbans and 2 Ford 7.3 Powerstrokes . Both Suburbans are 2010’s one of the powerstrokes is a 1996 F250 4x4 and the other one is a 2000 Excursion 4x4 with 350,000 miles on it. Guess which one stays broken down 70% of the time? Both suburbans either alternators batteries or the DOD constantly.

I remember doing quite a few of those screw in ball joints there’s 2 different size sockets that snap on sells I needed to get both of them just to do the job I had to put a weld bead on the top ball joint because the control arm wasn’t available anymore

I was working on my neighbors 95 Kia sportage, the upper ball joint on the passenger side was no longer together, the weight of the vehicle was the only thing holding it in place, one good bump and it probably would have lifted off, you could lift the upper control arm right off it,

I did a lot of state inspections for the sticker program, and it would upset me to get a vehicle in that another shop did the inspection on only a year ago, and to find a ball joint or tie rod about to walk out of it's socket. there's no way that within 1 yr all of that wear could have taken place, so I know that the last inspector didn't check them or let them slide out the door like that. physics don't lie..
