RIP Abdul "Duke" Fakir who sadly passed away yesterday - 22 July 2024. Gone to join the others for a sing along. Thanks for some absolutely amazing music
The Four Tops were. Levi Stubbs' voice has more pathos than anyone short of some operatic great. Their arrangements, their hooks, drive, perfection. The Temptations went right past me, but these guys, good grief: Seven Rooms of Gloom, Wake Me, Shake Me. A celestial gift. Loved the English groups, the Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, but the Four Tops should never've been overshadowed. When i first heard this song in college, i couldn't believe its drive, played constantly in my head for weeks. Bless the Four Tops forever.
The Four Tops kicked butt. They are one of the greatest male groups who never got their props how great they were. Levi Stubbs such a gentleman who soar above other male vocalists.
Trust me, they got their props. A highly respected Vocal group that was also known for their longevity.. and keeping the original members together for 43 years. Just wanted to share a different perspective with you.. Peace!
We use to fish Lake Murray in SC in the seventies. We’d be playing music like this and catching Crappies 2 - 4 pounds all night. I think it was the vibrations from this music on the bottom of the boat attracting them…. Lol😊
Berry asked levi to sing in a key higher than his natural voice as a Baritone. It lends a pleading to his voice which was the 'fairy dust' sprinkled on the 'Four Tops sound. Comes across loud and clear on 'Bernadette'. Singing down by the River on the Nightshift with all the Golden voices, Wilson, Luther, Michael, Marin, Tammi, Sam... The list goes on. looking forward to meeting them all Stay safe and well everybody and bless you all x
My fave 4 Tops song. Which is saying something because they had so many great tunes. You can't go wrong with Holland-Dozier-Holland writing for you. Great guitar riff and a killer Jr. Walker-ish sax solo. And the gods reached into Levi Stubbs' throat and gave him a VOICE!!! I'm an actor and got the chance to do the Tom Cruise-Risky Business dance in your underwear bit onstage to "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch". I worked out some killer moves and boy, was that fun!
On this day in 1966 {January 30th} the Four Tops appeared on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... They performed a medley of their hits; "It's the Same Old Song" {#5 in 1965}, "Something About You" {#19 in 1965}, and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" {#1 for 2 weeks in 1965}... Lead singer Levi Stubbs, aka Levi Stubbles, passed away on October 17th, 2008 at the age of 72... R.I.P. Mr. Stubbs and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...
yes yes yes Something About You Baby That Makes Keep Lovin You !!! Now That How You Get Down & Get Funky !! This All Time Great !! Still Dig It ~ Take Us Back To Those Good Times We Love❤
And yet there are those out there who wonder why I keep saying that the late, great Robin Seymour's Swingin' Time was the greatest ever TV show of its kind of all time. Here is one of thousands of reasons why. Absolute, utter perfection.
The only Motown group that never broke up,and was only separated by death. 44 years of great music, loyalty, and friendship. Rest peacefully,Four Tops. Lawrence Payton,Sr (March 2nd,1938- June 20th,1997) (Second Tenor & Vocal Arranger) (Group years: 1953-1997) Renaldo “Obie” Benson (June 14th,1936- July 1st,2005) (Bass) (Group years: 1953-2005) Lead Singer Levi Stubbs (June 6th,1936- October 17th,2008) (Baritone) (Group years: 1953-2000; 2004) Abdul “Duke” Fakir (December 26th,1935- July 22nd,2024) (First Tenor) (Group years: 1953-2024)
Abdul "Duke" Fakir was also in a Documentary called "I'm In A Boy Band" a UK Documentary a couple of years ago. It's Sister Show "I'm In A Girl Group" featured Mary Wilson of The Supremes Nedra Talley The Ronettes (RIP) and Delores Lala Brooks The Crystals. The One Directions could learn from them about how not to get too egotistical about their Fame.
The Tops could really give it some, but this is lip synced to the record with the Andantes filling out the backing. This was very common back in the 60s.
@@jackanthony976 Because they don't really sing high harmony and the harmony is low, so The Andantes added sweetening to round out the background vocals.
@@NathanAHogan I read in one of those Motown biographies that David Ruffin actually locked the Andantes out of the recording studio when he heard they were going to be standing behind the Temptations filling out background vocals. As in David 's words.."We got five Temptations on vocals... we don't need no Andantes singing behind us."
@@jackanthony976 The Andantes sweetened the sound of most of the Motown acts. They also did the background vocals on Higher and Higher by Jackie Wilson. They were instrumental in many songs we've loved.
Looks like something they did sometimes, show them singing the song but the original recording of the song is being broadcast over TV signal . I don't think Ed Sullivan would do this, this seems like a small ,local, TV studio
