In todays how-to video I go over the basic step of figuring out what's causing the grinding when you try and start the car. Is it a starter, Flex plate or flywheel?

I had this problem on my 06 350z and it didn't give me any warning. I started the car with my keyfob that morning and like an idiot i accidentally turned the key over for maybe a second and thats when im guessing my teeth broke or my flex plate broke (i couldn't hear it cause my car is kinda loud). I got to college and started it up after class and funny enough i was going to drop the car off at the schools auto tech center for them to replace my rear main and while driving out of the parking lot i hear rattling under my car. I was finally able to get my flexplate turned enough to start the car and i just drove it back to the auto tech area and left it. Its been about a month since i dropped it off and they still haven't be able to work on it but im glad i found your video to five me confirmation on my diagnosis.

So the car was already running and you manually cranked it causing the motor to crash into the teeth. It happens, Might as-well swap it out when they remo9ve it for the rear main seal.

What makes the starter stay engaged after the vehicle is already started? What would cause the bendix to not fully disengage on a 99' Ranger? Same issue with two different starters, so it's not the starter. Ignition Switch? Wiring or maybe Relay contacts burnt/welded? Idk?

@HITekRC
@HITekRC Год назад
If your flex plate had spots that had damage and you replaced both you might have an alignment issue with the starter itself. I Know some GM vehicles with the 5L engine had shims to shim down the starter

My car makes similar sound . 2 years ago I got my starter replaced n the guy who did it forgot to shim it n it’s been starting like this since .n now it’s bad sometimes it won’t even start . Is it the starter or flywheel ??
@HITekRC

If not grinds like I show in the video good chance you wore the teeth down on the ring gear. If it has a shim to start it needed one .

you can replace just the ring gear but you still need to remove the flexplate

Around how much it cost me to replace the flex plate & starter for a 2005 Larriat ford f-150 5.4 4x4? I have a Mecanic that do for 1,200. Do you think that a fair price?

being a 4x4 that doesn't seem unreasonable. but to be honest its always advised to get a few quotes first.

hello, I am having the same problem but I see no damage to the flex plate and the starter is spinning fine except for the grinding noise. to remedy this I have to take the staerter down and rebolt it then the truck will start with no problem. what is going on ?
@HITekRC
@HITekRC Год назад
Starter could possibly be out of alignment. Some GM engines use small shims and if they get damaged or lost this could happen. A starter that was not right can also move around and enlarge the holes can also become out of alignment. If you manually spin the flex plate and the teeth are fine start looking at the starter alignment
@maceobane2804
@maceobane2804 Год назад
@@HITekRC hello again, I am suspecting the starter is moving side to side. how do I remedy that? I have tightened the bolts and used shims but. do I fill the holes and if so with what how do I keep the starter from "wiggling" from side to side?
@HITekRC
@HITekRC Год назад
@@maceobane2804 if you suspect play in the starter than the best remedy is to replace the starter
@samueleadle8078
@samueleadle8078 Год назад
Could also be a wrong starter. Some people don't check the teeth count for their stuff
@maceobane2804
@maceobane2804 Год назад
@@HITekRC ok, I had a new flex plate installed and it still makes the same grinding noise. I figured it out.......!!!! the bolt holes in the block has wallered out causing the starter to wiggle. I am going to solve that problem with a DANCHUCK PLATE. this plate allows the starter to be bolted towards the bellhousing and not UP into the block. I hope this works.

I had the same problem and found out that the bolt holes had "wallered out" and is a very common problem on chevrolet 5.7 engines dating back to the 1950's. to solve the problem you may as well add a Danchuck 10100 plate. you can get one at SUMMIT RACING with starter for under $350.00. yes you are going to have to remove the tranny or at least slide it back 6 inches to get to the torque converter off and if you are going to do that you may as well add the danchuck plate and never have to deal with the problem again
