“In the spring, the winter snow begins to melt and the water fills the valley full of life and colours.”
Glacial fed from high up in the Pyrenees, the Río Ara is Spain’s last free-flowing river. And it’s drying up.
Mikel Sarasola and Jan Larrue have reunited each spring in the Pyrenees, brought together by a common passion and shared dreams to explore the rivers of their homeland. In 2022, they rushed to attempt a top-to-bottom descent of the Río Ara, starting with the rarely-run Upper Ara and ending with the uber-classic Lower Ara before the water dropped out from under them. With the season growing increasingly shorter, they worry that the community will disappear, too.
“I would like to think that ours won’t be the last generation to enjoy these rivers that give us so much… But I’m not very optimistic now.”

Beautiful edit and message Gracias.❤ Something is changing yet we just keep on spending and consuming until one day, there will be nothing left to consume. Give thanks that we have had what we did for the next generation will have none.

Water for the river is last on the list, hydro power and irrigation take all they can and rivers run dry. Tasmania in Australia will be dry this summer. Great to see your still paddling Mikel. Tim & Susie

Good to read from you Tim!! Hope you both are doing great. Sad to read they are drying your river in Tasman, but something is going really bad for our sport… I still remember that run in Wingercarrabee (i dont know how to write it…), very good memories with you guys. Cheers Tim!! 😘

Wonderful movie, I feel the passion and joy of you two friends. I also feel the tragedy of all this natural beauty disappearing forever.

I’d be interested to know if/how much the average annual precipitation has decreased (as opposed to just reductions in S.W.E)? I’m also certain there is someone at a European university modelling anticipated changes to Pyrenees precipitation patterns under different climate warming possibilities. Those studies even if written for academia are often very interesting from a kayaking point of view. For example where I live (Coastal BC) it appears likely we will see an increase in precipitation overall, but it doesn’t mean the kayaking will improve as it will all come in fewer more intense storms during the winter rainy season. We have already witnessed this with intermittent floods and droughts seeming to be the new standard. I also like to keep in mind that while it’s our passion that motivates us to take notice, kayaking is of a minor importance when compared with the changes to ecosystems new streamflow patterns will cause, as well as incredible water management issues globally. Really appreciate the video, nice lines and beautiful cinematography 🙏

I did this river in the spring 2022 too. It is really amazing river, so sad about situation with a water...But all the june 2023 was paddble in Frenche Pyrenees and we got some kayaking in august/september, so one year you dont have water, other one is very sucsesfull for the kayaking

I live in Oregon and and by the end of Summer the glaciers on Mt Hood were as tiny as I have ever seen them. I hope the Pyrenees get a better snow pack at least in the occasional year, but the trend is the same.

We're experiencing the same thing in the southeast US. We're not glacier -fed obviously but each year we get less rain and our regular rivers are getting lower and lower. The only kayaking I've been able to do in the last 8 months or so are dam controlled flows and other artificial features

That looks like such a fun run! What a pity that it's drying up. I was lucky to run part of the Ara around the turn of the century, when there were several weeks of water due to a combination of rain and snow melt. My children, who have started kayaking only a few years ago, will probably never get to paddle so many of the really fun rivers...
