Isabel Urrutia Michael Kjær for fuck sake “yyour type of people think your soo woke”. Nike was founded in 1964. Not onto recently have people been more conscious about the brands they buy and the companies ethics. The growing social demand for responsible brands like Nike to be more “human” in its operations has meant companies with age like Nike have had to adapt and they have been. I say all this to say fuck you people with your cancel culture! It’s very toxic and influencers like yourself @kofuzi shouldn’t dabble into the politics of the sport without a backbone. This video to me looked like your trying to claim the moral high ground and please your “running club hipster friends” for popularity and financial gain. I know you’ll claim otherwise but that’s just imo.

Bro, I thought I was the only one that feels this way! The pregnancy clause admission (or “correction”) from Nike is HORRIBLE enough but the doping and Alberto’s ban (when there’s smoke there’s fire) just pushed me over the edge. I too feel like not rockin/supporting any Nike year. I know that I’m merely a speck on the dust within the NIKE’s large dessert sand of monster space, I’m doing it for me. This is very-VERY BAD for the running communities Nike gear appreciation! Many discussions I’m not looking forward to with my running community in the weeks/months to come! Thank you for your take 💯

Thanks for making a stand! Our voices as consumers matter. I also don’t like the fact that Nike, in its response even tried to discredit Mary by saying that as late as April, she wanted to go back to the program. That was missing the point.

It’s a extremely hard situation for a Nike running fan. I love Nike running gear and some of the shoes. Having a 9 month old girl, I run with her from time to time, I dress her in Nike gear. Seeing pictures of her in Nike gear the past couple of days gives me an uneasy feeling. I raced the Indianapolis marathon this past weekend in all Nike gear. I’m running the fall classic this weekend, not sure what to run in now. I’m just happy I don’t have to explain this to my daughter.

I swear that Nike plays the victim in most of these cases. They act like that don't have any clue as to what is going on in their camp. Head in the sand type of syndrome. They are well aware of everything that happens under their umbrella because they are acutely brand aware; hence the barrage of PR campaigns as soon as something hits the fan. You're absolutely right in questioning why these issues are not tackled proactively and are only rectified after the case. It's simply because they are of the mindset that if it's not public... it doesn't matter. But OH LORD, when something does become public then you can be assured that within 2 weeks that Risk Management and their PR firms have come up with a solution to appease their consumers. I applaud you on you taking the time-out to assess your feelings about the brand. And more importantly, making it your business.

Just ordered my first pair of Hoka's. First pair of non Nike trainers in 22yrs. My issue isn't that Nike is too big or that its just a small sub section (Nike NOP) that is at fault - the issue for me is that Nike management have it seems taken the sides of their head coach and are throwing female athletes under a bus who have legitimate concerns, especially with health and well being. Nike has lost some of its shine

Honestly, not to defend Nike, but I believe it's more managerial ignorance than willful support of this behavior. It is negligent and irresponsible to not have a subject matter expert in an executive capacity. Someone with the knowledge of how to manage performance development PROPERLY with the right resources and checks and balances. They've let the inmates run the asylum so to speak because the results have made them mounds of cash. They are too reactive and not proactive. If the board is smart, they will be less liberal with their trust and ensure there is a system in place to prevent abuses of power.
@Dogwood2556
@Dogwood2556 5 лет назад
@@EverythingIsPhotogenic According to the USADA report on Salazar, Nike's CEO was emailing back and forth checking on the status of the doping experiments... (Salazar was applying testosterone gel to his pre-pubescent boys, for heavens sake! Sick man) If the CEO is involved, it is willful support of the behavior. And Nike's behavior toward pregnant athletes is also willful. The evidence implicating Nike leadership's active involvement is pretty strong. Kofuzi, I'm glad you stepped up to comment on it. All of us need to lead by insisting on clean sport and gender equity.
@EverythingIsPhotogenic
@EverythingIsPhotogenic 5 лет назад
@@Dogwood2556 I appreciate what you're saying and the CEO is a scumbag. That said, he is one man who has the lion's share of power. This was not some big collective decision by hundreds or even thousands of morally bankrupt criminals, I still truly believe that the vast majority of their operations teams were just plain ignorant. I'm sure there are others involved in some unscrupulous activities but I believe on the whole that there are good people working at Nike at the upper echelons of leadership that are either completely ignorant of what is going on because it's not their role or are told to keep their f""king mouths shut. To keep their livelihoods they may just not get involved. Removing the CEO removes the primary source of cancer. If his replacement cares about sport he will demonstrate that the culture is not accepted and people can either support a new direction or kick rocks.

I will continue to wear Nike because I like their products. I believe what happened was wrong. I'm pretty sure we could also pinpoint positive things that Nike has done throughout their existence. Nike is a multi billion dollar corporation with an entire department and team dedicated to PR and how to respond to these issues. Just because they respond well when they get negative PR doesn’t mean they are serious about making real changes to their culture. I say this as someone who loves Nike’s products and has very much bought into the Nike hype in the past. They are extremely business savvy and know what they need to do to make a problem go away. With that said I do genuinely hope they can make some positive changes because I think they have some of the best running gear in the industry. Kudos to you Mike. It’s not an easy subject to discuss, but you have thousands of subscribers, so you are inadvertently an influence! As you pointed out, Nike provide a lot of support at the grass roots of sport. They supported yourself through the Chicago Marathon and in Berlin I experienced first hand the help they provide through their Nike Run Club activities. Ultimately though, it’s all about building brand loyalty.. in monetary terms, a small outlay to them can provide a big helping hand to people like you & I. We then feel a sense of loyalty & that’s where we feel conflict now. Your sport is your job if you’re a pro athlete, so just like I have performance reviews, maybe asked to shave more often or keep my company vehicle clean, they too have targets to hit & standards to keep (although at a very different level). Again it comes down to brand image.. the best athletes, winning & wearing XXXXXX shoes/apparel sells. What has gone on within NOP is wrong. We’ll never know if it was solely down to the coaches or directives from Nike execs.. but it has to change! It can’t only be about ‘winning at all costs’ whether that’s abuse of athletes or to overlook doping practices. The problems encompass most sports (especially tennis) & it seems, even brands. I don’t think it’s just Nike, but ‘the bigger the target..’ as they say. Thanks for highlighting the issues, creating more debate.. I believe it can make a difference👍
@scottallison3489
@scottallison3489 5 лет назад
I think you are definitely right, where there is smoke there is fire. It's so easy for a competitive culture to lose it's way when the focus is on "winning at all costs" to the exclusion of everything else. The fact that at this point, it appears like Nike is responding due to bad publicity rather than genuine concern for people over profit, is a bad look for a brand that is admittedly a leader in the field. Leader's lead, they don't follow. That being said, I am sure that Nike is full of good people that are working hard to do and given the opportunity will do what is right and honestly what should be common sense. I hope the mgmt team from top to bottom will look at everything top to bottom. Maybe even bring in an independent company for an analysis. Sometimes it's hard to look inward and see things that are blatantly obvious to everyone else. I'm glad that you are speaking out and making your position known on this. You are an influencer. You can make a difference. I am just one person out of millions and honestly Nike doesn't care about me one iota. You however, collectively with your followers, can at least have a voice that there is a small chance that Nike will hear, listen, and make changes.

Thank you for talking about this issue. We, as runners, are a community. And if someone from this community has a issue then we need to speak out about it. all companies need to be held accountable when they make mistakes and Nike being one of the biggest companies in the world, at least from a image perspective, should set their own standard high. And this mark shows that they need to have more oversight on their projects.

I love it that large companies can be called out when there is an issue. Running a large company is complicated, and companies are made of humans that make mistakes. Nike is a competitive company that wants to win, and does win! This desire to win, leads to some people pushing boundaries. The Eliud breaking 2 project probably would not have happened without Nike sponsorship. The Eliud message has been so positive for so many... With a company as big as Nike there will be good, bad and ugly. I like that through social media today we have a voice, and we can highlight both good and bad which should lead to good change. @kofuzi thanks for doing your part.

I’ve felt uneasy about Nike for awhile so I appreciate you making this video. I personally don’t want to be seen in their gear at this time and I think it will take a long time for that to change. I was even considering sewing decals over their logo on a couple key items I own. They kind of feel like a bully in the sport to me. I want to see them being proactive rather than reacting when they get caught. For me, it will take a long time of seeing changes in their actions to want to support them. Brands like Saucony, Brooks, Oiselle, Tracksmith, etc. have everything I need for running so I’d rather give them my money than Nike for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunaly consciousness is not something one can review on youtube my good kofuzi. I've been following you for a long time. and when I hear you, I hear a hard working father that makes running fun and shares it with everyone. Unfortunaly brands like Nike are companies that have way to much going on inside them to ever consider developing and Ethics or a code of conduct across the board. They are still ran by the laws of money and capital. Somehow these brands became bigger and bigger in ways where they started to design social behaviours and miconducts torwards their athelets. Nikes oregon projects only reflects what already happens at several gymnastics and athelectics professional organizations that represent the countries best. Even the olimpycs are packed with scandals. Sports has become a huge money making machine. And women outnumbered, in a world of men, have taken the fall seriously. Maybe we all should be running with less gear and more triff shops shirts and shorts. Maybe we all should be living without the law of "lesser evil" in our lives. Maybe we all do need to take a stand for something, maybe we can take a stand while running. Anyway I've been thinking about this also. And I do think that its bad and, honestly, mean. Still I do think we need to support the athelets that stand against it even if the hold a pair of Nikes or not.

Great job. I appreciate you taking on a topic that most of your RU-vid peers don’t want to address. The reality is that we all need to consider what our brands stand for, how they behave and how they address problems when they arise. And if we are fortunate, our behaviors will cause our brands to take prompt, irreversible corrective action when problems arise. Thank you!

Thanks for this video, respectful all around. My general advice for folks is this: Be mindful. That mindset will help you navigate life’s labyrinth. Regarding Nike. As a Eugene area native and current Beaverton area resident I am surrounded by Nike. Like you I grew up a fan, watching Carl Lewis at Hayward Field, Michael Johnson and his gold spikes on TV and M-AIR-J go for 6 rings. As an adult who is amid a job lay-off I’ve shifted my attention the last few months to attaining a job at Nike World Headquarters. It been one of those dreams that I never focused on making a reality. Living in this area you always hear stories from campus, and like any company it’s size, to be honest it’s to be expected. Not accepted or appreciated, but expected. (FYI Adidas has significant issues too) The last year or two the big story here has been the exposure of a male higher ups “boys club”. There have been several big departures / retirements / parting of ways as a result. I don’t believe that issue is now “fixed” but again at least a step, albeit it another day late and dollar short. These recent developments don’t bode well for Nike and their policies. I know folks at WHQ that have awesome jobs, with awesome people and exist in a portion of the 12,000 employees that are legitimately good people. So my plan is this: continue to pursue my goal and start a new career path at Nike. My strong points are creative problem solving and project design / overview / management, and have recently interviewed for what I consider my dream job. (Fingers crossed) Having heard, seen and experienced Nike from a variety of angles I have a few missions I will be a proponent of once I’m on the inside. - Improve the hiring process. Communication, opportunity, outreach, inclusion, etc. - Promote women in sport, especially in running as that is my passion. - Improved identification and fostering of talent, both inside and out. Who knows how far I’ll be able to take any of those initiatives, but those are things I’ve been thinking about the most these last months. I know of those 12,000 there will be numerous like minded teammates so I’m hopeful to make an impact no matter how large or small. If anyone has any additional suggestions, advice, etc I’m all ears. Thanks for the time to anyone reading, cheers! And if you’re a hiring manager, holler at me I’m available and ready to make a positive impact. 👍🏻🙏😎

I think you make a good ethical analysis for what is reasonable but also realize the difficulty in making such a stand.... I think you have a good bead on it. Companies are playing the “stupid” card more and more as a stalling tactic and as an excuse. This is displayed in sponsorships, hidden fees, and quid pro quo’s such as adidas with the university of Kansas(absolute BS imo). Accountability is definitely lacking not only in Nike but even more seriously in Boeing. I watched all the videos before you had this vlog and really didn’t expect you to take a stand-I just watched them to know what’s up. It’s great you have created a discussion that is meaningful even on a pretty small scale! I love my Nikes but I am disappointed with them right now.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this issue, for myself I didn’t expect you to share your thoughts about this issue, although it’s nice of you. I respect every individual how they deal with this issue any witch way they go. I like the products that Nike takes out and I have a lots of Nike shoes and apparels but I have started last week boycotting them for all the issues that came to the news lately. I won’t be mad if I see someone with Nike stuff but it’s something that I need to do right now until I see a change in the way they do business. I hope you can understand my point of view because English is not my first language. In the mean time let keep working at our goals and having fun doing it!

Thank you for your thoughts. I can understand how you are conflicted. It’s hard. Personally, I do not want to support Nike. My family is my top priority so their treatment of female athletes deeply bothers me. Honestly, I wonder how many Nike athletes made decisions about having a baby based on their poor maternity policy? I have not purchased any Nike product for quite some time now. On the other hand, the more I have been listening to the Clean Sport Collective podcast the more strongly I feel about those companies that are proactively taking a positive stand. Those companies I want to support.

Thank you for this video, I have recently also decided to leave Nike behind as my fav running shoe brand at the moment, no company is a saint but I cannot ignore such a clearly toxic culture and to support them by purchasing their products. I emphasise with the “it’s not my problem” feeling towards issues, until we realise that something is just a bit too far and we should “make it “ our problem. I hope Nike will make changes in their culture that are meaningful.

Thank you for talking about this. I actually stopped with Nike years ago based on some people they sponsor but all of the new things coming out about how they treat women in their training programs and sponsor contracts, they really need to fix so much. This goes very deep and because Nike Controls much in this arena, they need to dig down and clean up this mess. They won’t go away but why not do the right thing?’

As with other folks on here, I had a hard time “sticking with” your channel of late with your promotion of Nike, and my simultaneous frustration. But, I have an incredible appreciation and respect for your perspective and honesty here. It takes a lot of guts to say outright your thoughts on an issue this divisive, especially in a public forum. Thank you so much for “doing the right thing” (if you want to call it that) and being honest about what you’re thinking through, and for not “going overboard,” but making thoughtful, careful decisions about your actions and their implications. The world could use a lot more of that...

I have only been looking seriously into the running world for the last year and in that time, I have gone from being fascinated and enamored by Nike, to wanting to not buy their products. Not as much because their products are bad or lacking, but because they seem to have too much power in the running community. Running events, elite athletes, social media influencers are all saturated by the swoosh. That level of domination by any one company in any field is not healthy. The issues that you referred to are all indicators of that monopoly, where top athletes are forced to suffer in silence because they have few options. We owe it to the community to strengthen the other smaller brands.

Well said. I don't think I truly understand how big Nike is in the US. In Australia, we don't get brands investing this heavily in sponsorship or promotion. To us Nike is a big company but it doesn't impact our lives like it appears to in the US. Nike have a bit of a history of exploitation so I've always been a little wary of their products. Recent events have just added to it.

I didn’t know any of this until Jami did his video. Definitely messed up what they did but isn’t that what we always hear about running/track/field? That there’s doping involved, tough, sketchy people at best. Idk. I’d be curious to see how Nike responds as well. I do think we need to keep in mind the positives they do have in other areas. I’m not gonna burn my Nike’s. Not gonna stop wearing them. I’ll still go to them because of the experiences I have with NTC, but I’d like to see them do better for sure. I think most your viewers probably feel the same as you do,

It’s a really complicated issue, I not unlike you am a Nike fan boy. My issue is that in the last six or so years is that Nike shoes are the ones that have worked the best for me. I hate what has happened to Mary Cain and presumably others that may have been negatively impacted by Nike. It’s really tough to look at this from the outside and watch all of these really shitty things going on at Nike. But for Me personally I’m going to continue using Nike shoes and other gear, I also use gear manufactured by other or competitors of Nike but I’m not gonna stop using their gear at this point.

It's nice that Nike made corrections when everything came to light. The problem that I have is that if it didn't come to the light, no changes probably wouldn't have been made, and that speaks slot more volume to me as a company. Of course they are gonna make changes when things come to light especially when their is backlash
@kofuzi
@kofuzi 4 года назад
At this point, I will settle for making changes for what has most recently come to light.
@mikowhy9608
@mikowhy9608 5 лет назад
Tough call! I thing the vast majority of growing companies come to "a point of no return" - when they start to enjoy a great success, they know no settling is possible and "a surge forward" is the only way to outscore the others. Then for the sake of further success managers give a green light to all tricks available. NO excuse for Nike or others alike. That attitude just explains why they are not proactive, and only respond to a bad events... I hope this can be overturned, that some culture can be built into the 'growth' structure or plan, not just used as a marketing tool (temporarily). Of course, it is a 'cost' that needs to be taken... ...that is also including us, consumers of these goods. We should change as well, change our shopping habits and shopping culture - tough call (me included). That is why we need (and actually seek) people who can set a good example, who can alert both sides, be vocal on things that will make us uncomfortable, all of us. Thank you Kofuzi.

Thanks for putting up your feelings to us, is not an easy situation as we know. For those who make mistakes and are willing to admit and fix earlier, there´s my respect. Nike indeed is really big in all aspects and the actions they take can affect millions of people. And not just Nike itself, other giants in the industry. Good thoughts regarding many other products we use in our daily lives, putting some consciousness and to reflect about.
