In 1993, seven hikers set out into a southern Siberian mountain range to hike and explore the beautiful wilderness. Unfortunately, somewhere deep in those mountains, something so horrifying and confusing would happen to them that it is still a mystery to this day. This is their story. Mountain Climbing. Hey everyone! You might have heard this one before, but hopefully not. It's one that was too crazy not to cover, and at the very least hopefully some of the theories at the end were ones you hadn't heard discussed before! In any case, have a great week!

Sounds like Sulfur Mustard (Mustard Gas) exposure. A lot of the symptoms described here are exactly what you would experience if exposed. Also high fever would explain the tearing off of clothes. Low protein levels also are a direct symptom of Mustard gas poisoning. It would also explain maybe why she was still alive as she may have not been exposed as quickly as the rest of the group.

I've never heard of this one before. My own two theories (haven't watched all the way thru yet) are: 1: Some sorta natural nerve gas, subterranean build-up, was released by the weight of the snow on top of the ground. (Just watched ahead a bit and saw that nerve agent is one of the theories, but I didn't think of it being from an artificial source.) If it was natural, the gas released might just have been kinda random and inconsistent, or venting from a few specific holes in the ground, explaining why Valya had a lucky escape. 2: Hypothermia, but their capillaries froze just enough to the point where the vein walls were brittle but not broken. Then when they started to do vigorous exercise, the increased blood pressure burst their veins leading to massive haemorrhaging and coughing up blood. Would explain why it happened so shortly after they'd set off, and why the others died after panicking and further increasing their BP. Though, this doesn't account for the one that bashed her head in on a rock. Maybe it was a response to the pain she felt? And I guess Valya just so happened to be sleeping in the warmest part of the tent.

As an experienced mountaineer, I can vouch for a condition whereby if temperatures drop enough, and given the wind faces the correct direction, the air can freeze in your airways, literally crystalisizing your lungs, to the point you feeling like you are suffocating causing you to cough blood whilst also making you feel like you are overheating. This could explain why they had removed clothes and had coughed up blood..its an extremely painful way to die, but very possible this could have been the cause.

I lived in Chelyabinsk, Russia for 6 years, which is in western Siberia. On one particular July 4th, it started snowing. Not a little, but a whole lot of snow fell. It looked like a blizzard every time I looked out the window at work. Walking home suddenly became a challenge, because the snow was up to my knees and it was cold. You can train all you want, but weird weather can strike at the strangest times, resulting in disaster.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) --------

The way they died reminded me of how people die when exposed to gasses leaking from the ground. Sulphur can kill just like this if there's high enough concentrations. It would also explain how Valya survived, because if I remember correctly, she never crouched down. Sulphur doesn't disperse like most gases, instead pooling in areas low to the ground and surrounded on all sides. Basins, especially if theres geological activity, might as well be a coin toss between mostly safe and immediately deadly

It’s a horrific thought, but what if whatever happened to them wasn’t actually fatal? What if the reason the autopsy suggests that they died from hypothermia and were starving was because they weren’t actually dead when Valya left them? Maybe they were paralysed or comatose or knocked out? The cold would’ve made them pretty stiff pretty quickly and it’s well known that the colder a person is the harder it is to check their pulse. And if they had just been knocked out it might explain why it looked liked they’d taken their clothes off, they might’ve woken up after Valya left and been disoriented or confused and taken their clothes off before finally succumbing to the cold.

Someone with more medical knowledge can explain this phenomenon.

@@CALFOFOwhen someone freezing, the vessels vasoconstrict, yet smaller, to keep blood at your main organs raising risk for frostbite in extremities. The body will try to compensate for this by vasodiallating which expands the vessels to warm up but this cools the core body temperature down as it emits heat and they also feel hot and strip and temperature drops and they die. Definitely fits.

Yeah sounds similar to H2S gas poisoning. In low concentrations its super smelly methane "swamp gas" and you can smell it but once it gets a little more concrentrated you wont be able to smell it anymore. So if your sleeping in a bit of a hollow in the ground (as you do camping at altitude for wind cover) then as you sleep it can settle into the low patches in and around your camp and anyone who stands or tries to run through these areas will then begin to suffocate, have severe damage to the ears eyes noise throat (can even cause bleeding from these places) and you will also begin convulsing violently in most cases as you foam from the convulsion and the poisonous gas melts you you start frothing blood.

i'd say there are two likely possibilities: if what Valya saw is what actually happened, it was some kind of toxic gas that got stirred up by the heavy rain/snow/wind, and she was either fit enough to fight it off or just barely missed where the gas cloud was. if what she saw was a hallucination, she watched her friends die of hypothermia and almost succumbed to it herself. the starvation thing is a weird detail, but there's probably SOME way you could look like you were starting to starve after days of strenuous exercise and not enough food. i'd say the hypothermia one is more likely, but not by much. i'd also love to know if any testing has been done recently on the soil/water in that region to see if any traces of nerve agent are still hanging around.

I’ve never thought of the possibility it was a hallucination, whether due to exhaustion or going through it herself. It makes sense with people ripping off clothes, after all. And I’ve heard plenty of stories about climbers who suffer hypothermia and begin seeing things before they die. And for the girl who had a heart attack: if you aren’t healthy enough but keep pushing yourself, anyone can have a heart attack like the one girl. But I did originally think it was nerve agents being tested. The only fact is that we’ll likely never know, due to what she saw and how the autopsies differed.

One thing that fits the symptoms as well as the autopsy results is mushroom poisoning. Toxic mushrooms can affect clotting and lead to hemorrhaging; they affect the heart & blood pressure; lungs & respiration; CNS is obviously affected. But poisonous mushrooms can also cause rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of muscle) where there is protein in the blood. Rhabdo is a medical emergency & can be fatal. A possible explanation could be that they foraged and ate some poisonous plants or mushrooms from the woods. This could explain why Valya could have survived with zero similar symptoms (if she didn't eat any of it), why they would have gotten sick and died at around the same time (ingested during a common mealtime), and poisoning could cause symptoms like vomiting blood, as well as possibly the biological effects like apparent starvation...

If they all died of hypothermia I hypothesize that getting soaked by the rain in such an environment really took a toll on their bodies. I can imagine their appetites would be non-existent while being in that state and their decision making skills would be heavily impaired. Since they were freezing AND starving it doesnt shock me that they dropped dead while potentially traveling in circles or the wrong direction. Their instructor should have immediately figured a way to minimize the effects of the rain like wrapping themselves in their tarps.

Mushroom poisoning is plausible although it would not be Psilocybin mushrooms which are generally non-toxic even in high doses. Assuming no cover-up stuff: The material evidence from the autopsy (paradoxical undressing / hypothermia / starvation) trumps the verbal account of a traumatised only-just-survivor. They all obviously collapsed from exhaustion and maybe one was coughing and/or had a nose bleed (which the survivor's brain seized upon and exagerated). Then they died slowly over the next couple of days, long after the survivor had wandered off, traumatised and assuming they were dead. They ran for the trees, and began to take stock, as their tent was now nearly useless. They followed basic survival guidelines. They built a fire, but the wood was wet and burned poorly. One of them climbed a tree to see if they could spot the tent, however he was so frostbitten by then he left shreds of skin on the branches. Three of them tried for the tent, and died all in a line, none of them having made it. Two laying by the fire were burned on their extremities by the brief heat before the fire died. They were wearing the least clothes, and froze to death quickly. The survivors exchanged clothes, taking some from their dead friends. Some started to dig a pit, to shelter them from the snow. Of these, a small group were unfortunate enough to dig down into the ice ceiling of river that ran underneath them. My personal theory is that they were in a situation of being soaking wet and cold, disorientated from the sudden catastrophic turn in the weather, and were pushing to get into the shelter of the treeline. At this point, the instructor suffers a massive heart attack and is pretty much dead as she falls--and suddenly in addition to being soaking wet, blast-chilled by the wind, disorientated, the expert that seemed to know what to do had keeled over dead... and they snapped. Panic set in and with the loss of mental function came an inability to recognize the single most well-known element of serious hypothermia so the panicking group were also convinced they were burning up and started ripping off clothes. The one survivor was fortunate enough that she was cognizant of her own panic and instead of succumbing to paradoxical undressing, she kept moving and stumbled into a tight space that would shield her from the weather and be slightly warmed by her remaining body heat. After sheltering long enough to regain her senses, she went through all the survival motions she described: raiding the bodies for supplies, getting into the shelter of the forest, following the electrical poles, and then finding a good spot to wait for rescue. Her story is the result of extreme trauma and panic twisting her recollection so severely that she simply cannot remember actual reality. It is true that everyone was well-trained, but that is why I postulate panic: only with the rational mind taking a back seat would they simply have no idea how to handle what was happening.

Some people are just more tolerant of altitude and cold. This does not, however, exempt them from hallucinations or delusions. Plus, memory is not static - your brain starts modifying visual intake almost immediately. I think she survived while "watching" everyone else die, including her leader. She must have been terrified. I think it's testament to her will power that she behaved fairly lucidly over the next hellish days. She was just a young girl.

I think they might all have accidentally eaten poisonous mushrooms, one of them foraged. They started to get sick and vomit (maybe even vomit blood) while the weather returned bad. Then, the combination of confusion caused by poisoning and panic caused Ludmila to have a heart attack and collapse. After that, panic and hyperthermia set in, and as you said, Valya remained cognizant enough to find shelter, likely because she received only a mild dose for whatever reason (didn't eat as much. Didn't like mushrooms, natural resistance, etc.) A combination of truma and being poisoned caused Valya's recollection to be wrapped into her horrific account.

Its a great vid and a horrible tragedy. There are some things you missed from other research that maybe you can include in an update someday :) Ludmilla's daughter was in another hiking group on another route, she was ordered by the government not to dicuss her mother's autopsy, it would make sense that valia was given a similar order and wont talk about it. There is also a berry used in rituals that grows in that area, Ludmilla was known to be into that stuff and often foraged things from nature, encouraging her students to do the same. A tea is made out of it but in large amounts or improperly made the berry does horrible things to the body...this includes supposedly hallucinations. If they were all jacked up on poison hallucination tea then um....bad things could happen. Both of these came from another youtube vid where Ludmillas daughter said she was gagged by the government about it. Interesting stuff and sad...my bet is on the tea.

Assuming that Valya’s story is correct, it could be that the storm brought some kind of toxic compound into contact with the group. Weather can be unbelievably localized, so it is fully possible that the toxins/poisons could have been in the rain that fell on this group, and not the rain that fell on other hiking groups. As to why it didn’t effect Valya, it would depend on how the toxin/poison got into the body. If the group inhaled something in the air, perhaps Valya had a scarf wrapped around her nose and mouth, and the others did not. Or perhaps it is a combination of theories- the storm brought the toxin to the area, where fell with the rain and snow. Then, like some others in the comments have said, maybe the others inhaled it when kneeling by the ground. But, didn’t Valya crouch down when retrieving supplies from the deceased? Maybe in the time she was away in the forest, the storm washed away the toxins?

It was said that the government toxin theory didn’t make sense because they wouldn’t be testing in that area. But they didn’t need to be. Storms can pick things up and carry them for many miles, before dropping them down again.

I can't blame her for not wanting to talk about it. trauma's awful enough as is, but when you've got everyone who hears your story doubting it, you start to doubt it yourself, and then don't know if you're telling the truth or a version the others convinced you of anymore. Can you imagine being her and having a memory appear one day of just waking up to find her friends already dead of hypothermia, to suddenly feel like the violent version of things was just a dream, but you can't tell if it's actually the real memory surfacing or it's the others having slowly convinced you that's the truth? Would you want to tell anyone it? Would you risk people accusing you of having made it up for attention the whole time? Causing a whole new level of conspiracy theories to pop up as people theorize the government finally decided to pay you off? personally I'd assume we're looking at a disease of some kind - I initially assumed rabies at the description but that would be common enough to have been found in an autopsy. if it was some kind of military thing, they didn't really have reason to go ahead and shut up some hysterical kid who had been lost in the woods for a couple weeks - doing so would have just raised more suspicions, whereas as is, even people sympathetic to her think she was just delusional. the story covers itself up, if it is the case.

I've been thinking about Valya for some time now and what she went through is absolutely insane. But I think things get even darker. The autopsy revealed that the group were starving when they died, which doesn't fit at all with the chronology we know of. They wouldn't have been starving by the time they died from whatever agent or substance or gas leak caused their condition. So it's possible that the agent, whether man-made or natural, actually knocked them out instead of killing them. The teacher died from a heart attack either because of the shock of seeing her "son" in this condition, because she was older, or because she had a preexisting condition, or all of these. So, when the paralysing agent wore out and the kids woke up disoriented, and suffering from hypothermia, they still had some precious time in front of them. But no food. Because Valya actually came back to what she thought were their bodies to take the food. That's why they were suffering from starvation. They actually weren't dead, and chance is, when Valya heard the results of the autopsy, she realized she had been wrong all along and maybe even thought she could have actually saved them, that things could have been different, if she had left some food or tried to help. She couldn't have, actually -what could she have done? But she must have put 2 and 2 together and understood that they were alive and starving because of her. That's why she has been insisting that she doesn't want to relive the trauma again and doesn't want to blame their mentor: because she blames herself instead.

This has been happening since the 60s, and not a single one of these were explained properly and were covered up by authorities. The range is used for military weapon testing and there's usually a large military presence in that area. Conveniently one of the groups showed symptoms synonymous with exposure to a nerve agent.
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable 10 месяцев назад
I have a proposed solution to the mystery and it is scary, but explainable. The symptoms described fit perfectly with acute respiratory methyl bromide, AKA bromomethane, exposure, followed by skin exposure as the gas soaked into their wet clothing, causing them to have extreme itching and remove their clothing. The high winds were carrying the gas from a source upwind and I will get to that source later. With how high the winds were, the gas was not being carried evenly and was coming across in sudden patches, so this is how she avoided getting hit with it. Running like hell might have also saved her life. The gas causes, with severe exposure, headaches, dizziness, fainting, apathy, weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, confusion, speech impairment, visual effects, numbness, twitching, tremors, paralysis, convulsions, pulmonary inflammation, pulmonary edema, seizure (worse than convulsions), ventricular fibrillation, and death. These effects can be delayed for minutes or even several hours. This means that they could have been exposed as they slept or while they were eating breakfast. It is really hard to know without pinning down the source and the directions of winds that day. The "blood" coming from the eyes and being coughed up was caused by bromide present in the tears and excess fluid from the pulmonary edema. It would look like blood as it would be a reddish brown and there would be a lot being coughed up. The rain would dilute this so there would be nothing left for those that recovered the bodies to see. The bruised lungs found in the autopsy are from the swelling of the lung tissue as they remained in the area that was contaminated with additional gas. The teacher did die of a heart attack as ventricular fibrillation is a form of heart attack that leads to cardiac arrest. The itching and being soaked through with rain while laying on snow while in confusion from the poison, they removed their cloths, then died of hypothermia. Now as to where did all this nasty gas come from? Well, remember the high voltage power lines the survivor followed to the village? Those would have come off of another, higher voltage line for making long runs that supplied other villages. These would have been connected by switching equipment and a set of step-down transformers. Step-down transformers that would have been built with internal fire suppression since they were in the middle of nowhere and with the best option that technology of the 1950's through 1970's could offer, safety not considered as no one would be near them. That fire suppressant would be methyl bromide and there would be a lot there. The switching gear is probably abandoned now and the yard not even maintained as after you remove the connecting gear, the rest can just sit there as spare equipment, if it even works. Disposing of them would be expensive as they are hazardous waste now, so they likely sat there until a leak sprung. The other option for a source would be a downed jet or just jet engine as methyl bromide is used for the same use in those and the Soviet Union wouldn't have bothered to go get it. As for the near starvation, food near the end of the Soviet Union was not in high supply in several areas and it was not uncommon to barely have enough to eat, so protein levels would have been low to begin with. The group had been doing heavy training for months before this. It is very likely they had not been consuming enough calories, especially proteins.

Chemist here: this is nonsense. methyl bromide will not generate bromine which is brown. And methyl bromide isn't a fire retardent, that would be tetrabromomethane which is not poisioness and isn't a gas. So, no this is not the answer.
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable 10 месяцев назад
@@retu3510 Fire suppressant, not fire retardant. That means it is a chemical used in fire extinguishers. It was specifically used from the 1920 through the 1960s as a fire suppressant for transformers since it was non-conductive and the thermal decomposition would not add to the reaction's energy. It was replaced by halide chemicals. This information is in the Wikipedia for uses and I would have expected a trained chemist to at least double check past uses as equipment and spills using industrial chemicals can be over 100 years old at this point, so what you learn about a chemical is school is not always the whole picture. Looking up the bromine more, it looks like you are right on that one, but when I double checked the thermal decomposition products to be sure I was right about fire suppression use, I saw the resulting chemicals were hydrogen bromide, bromine, and carbon oxybromide. It has a flash point of only 194 C, so even after it has put out a fire, if the system keeps going, you are going to get a mix coming off of it. No report of smelling or seeing anything that would fit a cloud of that, but with the wind like that, it might have been hard to see. We also circle back to the theory of secret military stuff. It is possible that there was something buried and forgotten, but it would have had to still had power or something hot enough to decompose enough of the methyl bromide...like one of the old Soviet radioactive thermal generators. One of those could produce the heat and the electrical equipment that it was attached to could have had fire suppression systems that used the methyl bromide. I think you might have given us the final piece of the puzzle. A generator like that was used typically in remote location navigation equipment. They would be placed out there and need to be maintenance free and would have pretty much a zero chance of having human contact since it would have "Danger: Radioactive! Do not approach!" signs in Russian all over it, so using it would be just fine and the best option in the 1960's for such a system as it could go off and prevent the spilling of the radio-isotope because of a fire. It probably was on top of one of the mountains and was a navigation radio for traversing the mountains they were hiking in. It rolled down after a rock slide and was never replaced because planes had been flying higher after the 1960's and 70's as propeller driven aircraft stopped being used for long haul. They didn't see it since it was covered in snow and debris from decades of erosion. It explains the erratic exposure and why she survived. The gases just didn't waft at her as it was leaking.

@@retu3510 Headache is one of the symptoms of acute exposure, as is confusion and visual hallucinations. It effects the central nervous system and the brain, so a heavy does of it at a slightly higher than sea level altitude could have caused her to start doing that. There isn't enough data on the full effects of heavy, acute exposure symptoms as they tend to be deadly and there weren't a lot of incidents. There won't be any studies experimentally as it is not produced anymore as it is horrible for the ozone layer and is so poisonous. There just isn't a large enough sample size. I watched another video about this once that postulated that the hikers had been picking and collecting a popular plant/flower/fruit common to the area as they hiked that somehow, combined with the altitude, affected them negatively…..unfortunately I can’t recall exactly, but it made a lot of sense.

The most logical idea I can think of frankly is that, as suggested by someone else, Valya saw them fall but they were still alive when she fled but later died of exposure. The significant lack of nutrition can be explained by excessive exercise which can raise your metabolism and burn calories which would also explain the lack of protein. Why would everyone collapse? My guess would be exhaustion brought on by extreme cold. Sure, they were all fit but that doesn't matter much if they got no sleep. We know they had some trouble sleeping the previous night so they may have just given up. Panic upon seeing the first of them fall could have led to the rest running out of energy and cause a heart attack in Ludmilla. They had been training together for months so I'd imagine they were very close and thus the mix of strenuous exercise, extreme cold and stress might have caused a myocardial infarction. Why wouldn't everyone have died then? I'd put it down to two factors. 1. Valya could have just happened to get enough sleep to stay awake so it was just plain dumb luck and 2. Adrenaline would have been pounding; especially if she thought sticking around was a death sentence. From then on, pure survival determination drove her though until she was rescued with the horrific, blood filled memory being memory distortion or trauma.

I dont have a theory for what killed them, but i do remember hearing about runners who got exposed to extremely cold air too fast and exursion in this cold air caused lung pocket (?) Ruptures that caused them to cough up blood. I believe the movie "wind river" explains this phenomenon in detail... Either way, my theory for why they were starving was that none of them actually died after collapsing. I think they were immobilized and or unconscious but still alive for a few days until the combo of starvation/ extreme bodily damage finally killed them. Situations like that have happened with gunshot/ stab victims. It ends up taking them days to die of damage/ blood loss, but a friend will leave them thinking they are dead when just unconscious. This would also explain why their clothes were taken off. I believe a freezing person loses their ability to regulate their temperature right before death and they actually start feeling very hot which is why many freeze victims will take other their clothes before they die. (A medical expert should be able to explain this phenomenon much better than me) But just my two cents!

For nearly the entire group to be killed and so rapidly, some toxin is most likely related. Since the group was exhausted, it would make matters much worse. Also, the toxin didn't necessarily have to infect them on the mountain but they could have been infected much earlier and the exhaustion just sped up the process as it weakened their immune system. As for how Kamila survived, she may not have been infected or had an overactive immune system that kept the toxin in check. And keep in mind that the toxin doesn't have to kill them, just weaken them to the point where the elements did all the rest. And the autopsy may not have included a chemical analysis, just a regular exam and when it was learned that the group died of freezing (hypothermia & 1 heart-attack) then no further tests may have been done. It happens a lot more frequent than you think, where proper procedures are skipped, either through laziness, incompetence or not wanting to waste the money. I bet that had they done a thorough investigation with toxicology, the real reason would have been found out. Or maybe someone didn't want the truth to be discovered? But a group like that doesn't die of hypothermia nor take off all their clothes so rapidly, unless there was another factor in play, such as a toxin. And again, the toxin didn't have to enter their bodies on the mountain but could have happened sooner or before they went on the mountain. I'd be interested on their travel before they got to the mountain. Remember, they did eat fish before their trip, and some of the fish may have been infected. Could they have gotten mercury poisoning, which was used in many industries back then, which when used on rivers infected the fish..? I'm NOT saying that is what the cause was, only that I believe they got infected with some toxin which weakened them to the point that they were then more susceptible to the elements. And that it may not have come from the mountain but before then.

mercury it depends on the type and dose, as well as if it is ingested , inhaled, or absorbed. IT would also have left certain marks on the gums have a strawberry tongue and dusky pink skin. Hypothermia produces blue-grey skin.

Don't forget that autopsies are notorious for missing clues or may not have had sophisticated enough tools for deeper investigation. Soviet Russia had no qualms about experimenting with bioweapons and nerve agents at that time despite international bans. They were sleeping on the ground so Valya may have been lucky enough by being in the right location at the time.

The last hypothesis is by far the most likely. She survived because she was better able to take care of herself, and the trauma affected what she remembered. Clear signs of paradoxical undressing, the fact that they were starved, and that they died of hypothermia. Pretty straightforward if you ask me.

The main problem with nerve agents is that they are so incredibly deadly in such miniscule amounts/concentrations that there's is no way that ludmilla could have not been exposed aswell, the whole group hiked, ate and slept together for several days.

Kind of interesting, how, if one youtuber starts telling a new story, it seems like all the other youtubers also produce their videos about the same subject. I heard this story the first time about a year ago and now almost every "mystery" channel on youtube I know has a video on it. Same with the story about "Portlock" in Alaska or the "Yuba County Five". Never heard of these stories before but suddenly the videos about them popped up everywhere.

Well, not everyone is subscribed to all the same channels, so it's worthwhile for each one to do their own video on it. Then there's also the fact that this allows for some channels to do more research, focus on different details, or even have personal insights into each case.

Ya know...I have noticed that so many times! I will say the "expected" response; "Oh, just coincidence." I don't think so, though. Wouldn't that suggest that these "completely" separate RU-vidrs would have to be researching _all_ at the same time, producing and editing their videos _all_ at the same time and then releasing them at approximently _all_ the same time? I only thought of this as I was writing to you, but wouldn't it be funny if, somehow, these RU-vidrs were _all_ in cahoots together. Deciding on a topic, doing separate research (maybe from different parts of the globe), compiling info and pics or video footage and then finishing all in their own youtube style? Conspiracy? Trickory? or intelligent? LOL! Sorry if I _over_ replied, but this has bothered me for a loooong time! I hope you have swell day :)

I did a little research after being informed that lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. I believe this could have been a Limnic eruption of either of two kinds. 1) The Udokan Plateau volcano is a volcanic field located in southeastern Russia 400 km ENE of the Baikal Lake. The field contains cinder cones, lava domes, lava flows and explosion craters (maars). This means that a limnic eruption is possible as long as a meromictic layer of CO2 rich gas was able to accumulate under pressure in lake Baikal. The storm could have disturbed the waters of the lake enough to cause the layers to mix enough to allow a massive amount of CO2 to release from solution due to pressure changes, then you have a massive bubble of CO2 rising from the lake and flowing downstream towards the Hikers. CO2 poisoning can cause convulsions which could explain the bleeding from the mouth(bitten tongue) and smashing their head on a rock. It can also cause sudden unconsciousness followed by a quick death in higher concentrations.. The survivor could have been outrunning the colorless gas which was blown away by the storm before she left the next morning. 2) a different kind of limnic eruption that stems from the russians experimenting with or dumping the nerve gas into lake Baikal. in this scenario, the gas escapes the containers in the deepest parts of the lake, but is trapped under pressure from all of the water on top of it... until the storm disturbs the waters enough to cause a 'limnic eruption' of that nerve gas, it then flows down stream towards the hikers and they're exposed. Again, the survivor outruns the slow moving gas and it gets blown away by the storm before she leaves the next morning. Let me know what you think.
