Ferret litter box training can be a bit tedious, but with a little patience and consistency your ferret should quickly learn how to use a litter box.
I recommend getting a litter box with a high back. There are litter boxes made just for ferrets. I also recommend limiting the ferrets space when litter box training. I only allowed my ferrets in the bottom portion of their ferret nation cage while litter box training. This helped them learn to go to the bathroom in the litter box and not the corners of the cage.
I also made sure they used the bathroom before letting them out to play. Ferrets back up and lift their tails when they use the bathroom. If you have your ferrets out and running around keep an eye on them and look for this behavior. If you see them back up and lift up their tails/butt, pick them up and place them in the litter box.
Over time your ferret will catch on. Ferrets are smart and they figure out what you want pretty quick in my experience.
Also, praise your ferret every time they use the litter box. You can do this with treats or just a simple “good job”. And remember, your ferret may never be perfect at using a litter box. There may be times they have accidents or just don’t use the litter box. If this happens, clean it up and move on. Scolding your ferret will not help, especially after the accident happened.
I use paper pellet litter, there are other options available that are ferret safe, but it’s recommended to stay away from litters that are made with silica or clay, and to avoid corn, wood shavings and rabbit food, as they can be dangerous for your babies.
