It would’ve been nice if “dad” made sure the children were ok instead of finding another woman to spend free time with.

Man, what a story. My single mother was insane. I grew up w her and started taking off at 14 and left for good at 18. I didn’t understand she was nuts. I just knew I needed to get out of there. Human relationships are too hard for me now. I don’t trust anyone bc I know my own boundaries and perceptions are damaged bc of my relationship w her, so I keep it light and polite. Single for life, no kids, and loving it.

Yikes! I am bipolar 1 with a history of psychosis too. Fortunately, no kids and I take my meds.

I’m friends with Bernie Pyne. He currently believes Jeff did commit the crime, but that it wasn’t premeditated. The family doesn’t currently visit Jeff.

Lots of people in the comments throwing shade at people with Bipolar disorder. They suffer greatly and aren't at fault for their illness. It's common for people not to want to take their medication, with many mental illnesses. It's a disease. It's complicated, difficult to deal with by everyone involved, and luckily, most of them don't get murdered by their children. The son might have had a mental illness, as well. Maybe one not as obvious as his mother. A sad end to a sad life, for both mother and son. He'll likely be haunted by this for the rest of his life.

I'm pretty sure Jeffrey's mother made enemies outside of the home. She had a quick and fierce temper when not on her meds. Free Jeffrey !!!

I think he did do it. Just because someone doesn’t have a violent history doesn’t mean they can’t snap one day. His mom probably drove him over the edge. The whole situation is just sad

I have Bipolar disorder and for most of my life my relationships with friends and partners have been infrequent. I overanalyse everything until I'm convinced they hate me and then I push them away. I only have my family now but it's taken over 20 years for them to be able to (mostly) understand and accept it. Our relationship is a hundred times better than it was but it's been a tough ride. Saying that, there are still times where they don't understand. If I were in their position I'd struggle too.

Why do people who are clearly better on meds stop taking them?..it's so hard for a family to deal with..it must just constantly wear you down

His little sister lost so much. Hope she had outside support. That little girl must have seen so much.

Unfortunately, I think the son killed her. I disavow his actions, but I understand the frustration.

There needs to be guidelines for citizens to pursue commitment and guardianship in severe cases of Bipolar d/o and Schizophrenia where the suffering individuals are completely out of control and need to be committed to get medications, perhaps long acting injectibles. Involvement of family in the treatment process despite HIPPA should be considered in such cases and made legal for healthcare professionals to provide support and guidelines.

This case certainly exemplifies the destructive nature of mental disorders. It affects not only the person with the disorder but also families and even generations. It’s a journey in which everyone travels together. I think everyone was a victim in this case, even the perpetrator.

Eesh. I have bipolar disorder and I feel this on a visceral level. I tell my loved ones, I take my medication diligently, and it is a legit struggle to keep things together. It'd break my heart if I had a partner that cheated on me when I was in hospital, but I can absolutely understand the pain this family went through.

I think living with Bipolar is difficult because you never know when you’ll drift into delusions and psychosis. One might stop taking their meds or the meds might stop working. You need an outside perspective to see when things are going awry. Problem is, when they do, the sufferer may not believe those they trust because these people are likely the ones the delusions are about.

Poor family and the pain Ruth suffered. My mom was an alcoholic, my brother ADHD, that combo ruined me forever. I miss my brother so much more than my mother. Love him dearly.

As someone who has had quite a lot of experience with the mentally ill, I always say that it's not the mentally ill person's fault that they are mentally ill, but it is their fault if they refuse treatment after they learn that they are mentally ill.

Again kids are pawns. They are only valued for what they can do for the parents.

How on earth do they know a 2x4 and a box cutter were "missing"? That's very odd.
