Steve compares a pair of Gen-3 Camaros and gets a “rat” of a surprise! And what’s up with the weird “one-needle / two-speedometer” instrument panel? Also learn what lies beneath those slick IROC-Z hood louvers in this side-by-side Camaro comparison video.

I had a 2.8 in a base firebird back in the day. Someone did some small but good modifications to it mainly the rear gears and posi. That thing would do 10 mile an hr rolling burnouts for ever! One night i got carried away showing off and over revved it until it blew up. It didnt go all at once though. Had a hard rod knock to begin with. It was my daily so i babied it with the knock for 6 months and it gave up getting on the highway omw to work one morning. Threw a rod right out of the block! Was one of my first motor failures as a kid and certainly wouldn't be the last!

Was it before or after 87. In 87 they fixed an issue with the crankshaft and I don't think I've seen people getting rodknock on 2.8s after that. Those engines are kinda known to be really reliable ,I wonder what do you mean you over revved it ,it shouldn't grenade on you like that.

My uncle had its base Pontiac cousin, a 1987 Firebird base V6, with the 4 speed auto. I do recall even as a kid it was pretty slow for the 80s, he said it handled pretty good after he upgraded the shocks, brake pads and put better summer tires on it. That car still exists, albeit quasi non-running in his garage. Assume it’s not worth much if he ever wants to unload? That said, would it manage a V8 big block (or heck even a 350) well? It’s pretty well used, but didn’t see much winter in the Midwest so it avoided bad rust…

I wish there were some sort of update on how Mr. Magnante is doing. Until then, as stated last time: Close. The 2.8L V6 VIN code "S" engine was used from 1985-1989 and then in 1990 the 3.1 VIN code "T" RPO code "LH0" took over for base engine duties in the F body line and ran from 1990 to 1992. From 1982 to 1986, you could get a four, six or eight cylinder F body. Staring with 1987, you could only get a V6 or V8. Third generation cars were assembled in Norwood, OH (through August of 1987) or Van Nuys, CA. The Van Nuys plant closed in 1992 with the end of the third generation cars, and F body production was moved to St. Therese, Quebec Canada for the 4th gen cars (1993 to 2002).

For some reason I love the look of the sport coupe. It has aged well.

I took a new one for a test drive and hated them ever since! Not impressed at all. Workmanship was terrible. I drove a terrible car at the time, so it should been awesome.
