Wings for Marie should wait as the journey of growth through the Lateralus and 10,000 Days albums sets it up. Not just the growth of Tool, but of the listener as well. These albums deal with communication and perception a lot and are definitely more "spiritual".

One of the things I love about the songs relating to Maynard's mother is how you can see his emotional growth over what happened to her. Opiate is pretty scathing in it's indictment of organized religion, Judith is pretty scathing in it's indictment of faith, then we get Wings for Marie 1 & 2, almost finding peace finally, then we get Right in Two which I include a bit indirectly. Just... fascinating.

It's powerfully, and almost aggressively, mournful. Anger and pain and sorrow. The slide guitar matches Maynard's voice in soaring emotion and range...and I think that's intentional to mimic a chorus of weeping angels, if you believe in that sort of thing. This might be the best hard rock single released in the last 20ish years. Not trying to piss off fellow Tool fans (because they are my favorite band), but Tool doesn't really do "singles." ;-)

Maynard wasn’t questioning his mother’s faith as much as he was lashing out at the hypocrisy in her church (Southern Baptist). People from her church were talking behind her back saying his mother must have deserved this fate for God to punish her like that. When he says F your God, it wasn’t directed at his mother, or God, it was directed at the fundamentalists & extremists who without compassion or reason do so many hypocritical, bad, or evil things in the world and claim it’s in Gods name ... thus “F your God”. Maynard does a commentary about this song which explains his mindset (which is often misinterpreted) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YU0BrwlWNTk.html If you want to dive a bit deeper into songs about Maynards mother, and his healing period, check out Wings For Marie & 10,000 days. (Both TOOL songs, not APC) 10,000 days is roughly the amount of days his mother spent paralyzed after her aneurysm. Make sure to use the lyric videos as well. It’s an amazing experience that will move you to tears... 🇵🇱

The major issue with Pascals wager is that it assumes the validity of Christianity specifically. It ignores the fact that Islam may be right, or that Judaism might be right, or that any of the other countless faiths that do or have existed may be right. So it's not a 50:50 arguement of belief vs non-belief. It's explicitely believing in ONE of the THOUSANDS of faiths vs non-belief. The fact is that believing in the Christian god does not guarantee being saved, because you might then just end up in another faith's hell as a result. So Pascals wager fails logically. And that ignores the fact that Christians cannot even agree amongst themselves which version is correct and which leads to salvation. Various sects of Christianity believe the other sects are going to hell for example.

I always thought that A Perfect Circle was more the "radio friendly" venture for Maynard. So maybe that is the reason for the familiar feeling. If you want to hear more from them then definitely Orestes, as many have suggested here. But also the song Brenna, simply because it's just a beautiful song. As always great video, thank you for these.

I would suggest waiting to do Salival after you finish the remaining albums. Although it does have a few songs not released elsewhere, the majority of it is live tracks of songs you've heard already just different versions in some cases. The reason I say to wait, is because with you just listening to Aenima, I think it would be much more beneficial in being able to see their growth and progression from Aenima to Lateralus having just listened to it, and from a technical standpoint, Lateralus is just on a whole other level. Just my opinion, but I think that would be the best course of action, and thanks for the continued hard work and amazing content you both (him and her) do weekly!

I believe some of Maynard's vitriol wasn't directed at Christianity in general, but at his mother's congregation in particular. There were those of her parish who questioned her piety or if she had somehow sinned to bring Gods wrath down on her. There is an interesting aspect to these lyrics, "Never taste of the fruit". Some have theorized that to get his point across he has assumed the aspect of Satan himself, posing as the visage of temptation. It's all fascinating and shows some of Maynard's genius. His lyrics are extremely well thought out and these multiple aspects of his argument are never incidental or accidental.

Jump into Lateralus! You've heard almost everything off Salival... that can be revisited later. Interesting how Maynard expresses this long-held bitterness toward the hypocrisy in his mother's church in Judith, and then the first song on Lateralus is The Grudge, which you've heard, in which he talks about how essential it is to let go of grudges in order to maintain our health and well-being. The second song on Lateralus, The Patient, fits into these topics too. You're going to love it :)

Great discussion. I believe Maynard is being hurtfully sarcastic, and pointing out the hypocrisy of the church. I read the line “he did it all for you” as sarcasm, because in Christianity that line is used to explain how Christs gift to us is that he Suffered for our sins, but here Maynard is flipping it around to say Christ’s gift (to his mom) is making her suffer. Tool is the mind, A Perfect Circle is the heart, and Puscifer is the groin. Place react to A Perfect Circle “Orestes” and “the Doomed”. I think you’ll like them.

I see this as rather simple song ... well if you know the background. When he was 11 (Jimmy), his mother had a stroke and was paralyzed (Eleven and she was gone). This was very traumatizing to him. Maynard, at this point seems to hate anything relating to Christianity: "You're such an inspiration for the ways That I'll never ever choose to be". And it's Maynard who is blaming God for his mothers condition: "Your Lord and your Christ / He did this / Took all you had and / Left you this way". But his mother still keeps her faith: "Still you pray, you never stray, never taste of the fruit, you never thought to question why". So this song is Maynard beeing angry for his mother for keeping the faith. Basically. He's sad and angry. Sad for his mother. Angry to God but also angry to his mother for believing in such God. When you get to "Wings for Marie part 1" and "10.000 days (wings part 2)", you'll see the conclusion. I won't talk about it here, we'll see when you get that far. :D

I believe this song is about Maynard struggling to rationalize how God could let bad things happen to good devoted people and those people not lose their faith. His mother was paralyzed in a wheelchair for the last 30 years of her life and her faith never wavered.
@JoeBlythe
@JoeBlythe 4 года назад
"He did it all for you" refers to the act in Christianity of Jesus Christ sacrificing himself on the crucifix, to pay for the sins of humanity so that the rest of us can find salvation. So Maynard is using this lyric to mock God. His mother's religion makes this claim that Jesus died on the cross for her, and he is more-or-less sarcastically saying "well I guess he died so you could become paralyzed, then". Maynard was absolutely slamming the church and his mother's religion in this song.

He explains how his mother's health began to deteriorate, while her faith strengthened her... meanwhile the people from her church began to talk behind her back, and claim it was God punishing her. Maynard then explains that the song goes on to say QUOTE "Fuck your god, but I'm not really saying fuck the ACTUAL God, but fuck YOUR god, you know, a god who would isolate people, punish, Genesis 1:1, in the beginning was the word, and the word was God, and originally in the text, that word was "Yewah" or "Jehovah", which means light and love. We've kinda twisted it to be this guy with a beard, passing judgment, but it's not: in the beginning was the word, and the word was love, and light, infinite, unconditional, and without judgement.Its hard for people to grasp"

I love how you two dig into this song so much. I'm pretty sure it's "literal", and he's lashing out. You'll just have to forgive him for his anger. Please go through the rest of tool and once you get to "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days", I think you'll see his attitude at that particular time, and then you can fully appreciate this song "Judith". That's weird to say because I liked this song before the 10,000 Days album even came out but whatever. I think all of A Perfect Circle's songs are normal length like this one. When coming from Tool, it's a disappointment. But Tool is the one that's different. APC is "normal" lol. Their first two albums are great, after that it's a song by song basis for most. But that's up to each person and you have to discover that on your own I think. Also: if you do get through APC's stuff, or if you want to do it for a 'first listen', there are great quality Live performances. Great quality for sound... the video quality is obviously dated, but the important factor here is.......... you get to SEE Maynard, front and center, with enough light to blind a baby mole rat. I think your husband got a little off track at the end. I feel Maynard is not criticizing the religion itself so much as he is criticizing the "everything happens for a reason" attitude that lots of religious people toss around. His mother's church turned their backs on his mother, claiming she must have done something wrong for God to punish her. Maynard feels his mother was the model Christian and never did anything to deserve her condition and he lashes out at her unwavering faith. The "He did it all for you" line is meant sarcastically as if he's saying "hey you were perfect and you did everything right, but God has a plan for you" and the "plan" was being paralyzed and ostracized from her church for "reasons".

Pascal's wager is meant to hedge your bets, but any deity that cared about such things would see right through it, Also you have to bet on one God, when there's a million different gods, also faith is a terrible thing, faith is the excuse you give when you don't have a evidence, otherwise you would give the evidence

OK, this comment is not about the song, but about "Pascal's Bargain." This is Blaise Pascal's assertion that people are betting their lives and possibly their eternities that God either exists or does not. Christian doctrine has one approach to this, while other faiths will approach the "bet" differently. Christian doctrine places salvation as God's decision and gift (grace), which cannot be earned in any sense that we mortals naturally understand. There is no "works salvation" but salvation by faith, with the words translated as "faith" from Hebrew and Aramaic meaning more "knowledge" than "belief". Thus, you cannot simply say, "OK, I believe God exists," and be done. Islam is somewhat different in that the concept of faith still exists, but the five pillars of Islam, which are viewed as guaranteeing some level of salvation, assert a works-based salvation. "Follow the rules and your fine!" is a (very) loose translation of this attitude. Other religions vary between these polls, or even break completely, such as various forms of Buddhism where there is no God, nor even gods, only a cycle of life, death and rebirth until you manage to escape that cycle. Pascal's framing was Christian-centric, obviously, but did not simply call for a decision to believe, but to learn to question your disbelief ... at which I will leave the topic because this rapidly becomes much like Alice's trip down the rabbit hole.

Judith is more "traditional metal" than Tool's works. A lyric I have a problem with is the one about "a spiteful spear". For Roman crucifixions, what would usually be done to speed death was to break the legs of the person being crucified. This would be both very painful and speed the death by suffocation. But, it was definitely not a "kindness" in any sense. When a spear was thrust into Jesus' side, this was to kill much more quickly and less painfully than breaking the person's legs. It was thus a continuation of the punishment (death), but merciful when compared to the normal alternative. Still, it is an incredible song. There are a lot of theological points that could be raised, but personally, I think the song should be accepted and understood "as is" because it is an expression of anger and pain, as well as resentment for the "Christians" who are failing so completely in understanding of human suffering. It is, at least to me, a pure expression of MJK's emotions, so that "reading deeper" really misses the point.

In Christian literature, God sent his son Jesus to die in the crucifixion, so that the sins of humanity can be forgiven, and we can find salvation in heaven. So he died on the cross "for us". So when Maynard says "He did it all for you", he is actually mocking God. He did it all for you, so that you can become ill, and live a life of suffering. So yes, it is meant to be perceived in irony.

I don't mean this as an insult but this is something that people who are ignorant to Christianity say (including Maynard). Neither God nor Jesus punishes us. God is not vengeful. Although everything we experience on earth is a test. The earth is the domain of the deceiver (Satan). But if you can have faith and stay firm in your convictions you will be given the kingdom of heaven in the afterlife. Neither God nor the Bible ever said that if you believe you will not have hardships on earth. However God can and does intervene at times, if you ask for his guidance and have FAITH. He doesn't use his power as a parlor trick to prove nonbelievers wrong. Just saying...

No insult taken whatsoever. I always appreciate disagreement, so thanks. I'm not too deep in Christianity so I'm aware I might be wrong :) I'm still not feeling i understand what you explained, I think I touched some points you made, the intervene part is still pretty blurry for me though (him)

@@initum1599 I completely get it and it's a common question for Christians as well. If Jesus came here and did all these amazing miracles in front of everyone back then, why don't we see obvious miracles now? My Belief and best explanation is two points. 1) Jesus came to mark the change from the old ways (Old testament) to the new. People could now have a direct personal relationship with God and they did not require the church and it's elders to make contact anymore. Also he granted forgiveness of sins. I think the displays of his power were to give legitimacy to his claims. 2) However because we were blessed with forgiveness, we also were now given the burden of free choice. If we had miracles smacking us in the face daily there wouldn't be much of a test of our faith. You could still choose to reject God but you couldn't hide behind the veil of not knowing. Or it wouldn't be a "test" anyway. Lastly I will say this... if you have faith and ask God for help YOU will know when he does. It will be entirely obvious to YOU. No one else will see it necessarily and it may not be what you had wanted or intended. But it will be what is best. You have to give your problems over in faith and let God work them out. Hope it makes sense. 😇

Jesus Christ died on the cross for us....but allows these tragedies i feel is the message. His mom maintained faith which almost seems an oxymoron.

What is the point of these "reaction" vids? Unless your a music aficionado. When you see these bands live, and have had a real reaction. My opinion, these vids are passe & pretentious. Not to mention malignant and lame. So cutting edge. Blase blah

Thanks for the feedback, it's actually very interesting, what's the point. Although, I'm not fully sure what exactly you're asking, can you help me understand? Is it why are we recording those and what's our point in doing these? Or do you mean why are people watching and commenting on that? Don't want to misinterpret so if rather ask. Cheers. (him)

@@initum1599 I'm amazed that the human race, would rather watch a reaction vid, instead of listen for themselves, or instrument up. And go to work....not to be rude but this whole reaction genre is quite gay. No offense love! You handled my criticism like a pro. God bless
