This is my favorite Kermode sub-genre: Murder under 3 minutes. Compact savagery.

I loved the scenes between Gosling and Fassbender when they were on street drinking, singing and dancing, I haven't seen that much room to play free, for an actor, very often

People, I cried a lot in this movie. Im not sure if I "get it" but somehow it resonated in me. I dont care about de career of malik or justify it for any reason external to the film, it really made me feel but I guess its not for everyone. (Although there really are some extremely cheesy bits)

Supposedly Malicks next film Radegund is going to have a tight script and linear structure. Hope he can make a comeback.

Haven't seen it but from his last two films, I've noticed the main theme of Malick's latest films is crisis, both spiritual and personal. They're basically films about Malick as a subject. Head spaces that float around intoxicatingly on film. Hugely indulgent and absolutely divisive. I think it'd be stronger criticism to just say that but I'm not a pro critic.
@djbrock65
@djbrock65 6 лет назад
You may not be a professional critic - very few of us are - but I appreciate the fact that you’ve reflected on some recurrent themes in Malicks later films and are open to them - even if they’re admittedly tough at times and for sure can be construed as a tad indulgent . Malick is an artist & that is something that MK doesn’t really get - he’s such a plank I can’t believe he’s paid by the guardian! You may have a problem with a director who clearly is divisive but at least show the respect & throw some questions out there in your review - not just vomit out self important hatchet job monologue - about Calvin Klein ad pretentiousness & superficiality . Kermode is really threatened by this type of film - he’s a populist with a visceral dislike for so much of what I feel is interesting & creative in film (e.g he hated “La grande belleza” ) - Cinema , in the fullest sense of what it can be deserves more than this . Grrrr!

@@djbrock65 Malick used to be my favourite filmmaker, but he's lost his way. Post 'Tree of Life' the two i saw were garbage. It's not about someone's status or intent as an artist, it's about the work they produce. He used to produce works of staggering genius. Not anymore though

Malick was my favourite director for years. I still liked 'The Tree of Life', but it wasn't as good as what preceded it. Then I saw 'Voyage of Time' and 'To the Wonder'. They were the two most boring, senseless films I've seen. Haven't bothered since.

Completely agree, just because Malick's done great work in the past does not by any means make his new films automatic masterpieces, I've found everything he's done after Tree of Life to be indulgent and repetitive.

disgraceland uk I kind of don't get why these films are being received so different to Malick films that are so highly rated like The Thin Red Line or Tree of Life. Did critics just get fed up with him?
@NiallOSullivan
@NiallOSullivan 7 лет назад
Mainly because TTRL and ToL were period pieces . There's something a bit more careful and crafted with regard to the design and the performances. Whereas TtW onwards seems to be about Malik following A Listers round contemporary settings with a digital camera and no-one really knows or cares how it's going to turn out.
@Kryotek7
@Kryotek7 7 лет назад
I remember watching The Thin Red Line in the cinema when I was about 15 and it was visually stunning and it had a strong affect on me. Rewatching it now you still see the visual beauty but it's self-indulgent and parallels his more recent work, it's just got a war theme and a few more relatable characters. TTRL also contrasted nicely to Saving Private Ryan which came out the same year but was so different in style and feel.

It's like many films by Terrence Malick. It needs to be watched and listen to and marveled at for Lubezki's camera work. And it should not be judged

*sigh* Kermode even bringing up Nicolas Sparks in the same breath as Malick, really unfortunate he doesn't like Malick's recent stuff, but while it is the weakest between it, To the Wonder and Knight of Cups in that little trilogy (quadrilogy if you include Tree of Life in that stylistic vein, of which I think ToL is weaker) it is still a really solid film I find, need to rewatch it. I think Malick's current naysayers can be mostly too full of themselves and condescending over his recent style, and with Radegund he's supposedly reverting to his more straightforward storytelling and people will probably eat it up all over again and talk about how great he is even though they have no problem ripping his current films to shreds...

The trailer of the film looked absolutely promising (kudos to the people who cut it). I saw it in a small theater and tbh it was so hard to get through. In the last hour people around me and myself started heavy breathing everytime the scene changed again and again to people rolling around in the fields or dancing in the streets. I thought that this must really come close to physical and mental torture. It was like a never-ending repetitive silly soft porn without honest emotions. The scene when the father lies in the bed sick actually really stood out to me as for the first and only time during the film I got the feeling that I'm watching real people.

*spoiler alert* If a dying father, having to deal with the trauma of being molested as a child, substance abuse, suicide - all are first world problems, then sure Mark, it's a movie about first world problems. Mark comes off as a much more insufferable high-brow snob in this than any of the people he's describing who might've liked it.

Vic D'Arcy Well I wanted to walk out after 5 minutes but that seemed a bit drastic. I loved "Tree of Life" which has also a similar style but in this movie it was so vague and non-descript and boring and not going anywhere. Haven't seen "Knight of Cups" though.

First world problems? Well having a constitution is a good start if other countries want to join in on first world problems. You know people in other countries fall in love to. Some live in nice houses, drive nice cars. I get it. Having to worry where your next meal is coming from is rough. I lived off the McDonald's dollar menu back in the day and I understand that's still like first class service to what many get but I wonder if Mark Commode's ever been in love because it lightens a heavy load in people's lives sometimes. But I will not feel guilty because I live in a "First World." Once people start living successfully the story doesn't end there. It's not like some don't get cancer, break up a relationship ect. I didn't know every movie has to be about maybe someone starving, a war breaks out, some one's car gets repossessed because they can't make the payment. Some people want to be entertained. Enjoy the fruits of their labior. If Mr. Commode cares so much donate your house to someone who needs one. My mission for Mr. Commode is, give yup ye riches and goeth' to live among the poor and become their champion from henceforth!!! Mr. Commode. Your heart is 3 sizes to small!!!

This was the worst movie of the year for me. Yes, even with Transformers: The Last Knight and The Book of Henry. I expect more from Malick, but this was only slightly more interesting than staring at a blank screen. It took me three sessions to finish it, and I can usually sit through anything. I am sick of watching beautiful people meander around town, while pretentious voice-over asks faux-philosophical questions... “What are you to me?” “Can love be real?” “When we touch, do you feel it, too?” “What is this love inside of us?” JUST STOP ALREADY!

What a garbage opinion. This guy's highfalutin whining is far more highfalutin than the actual subject matter he's trying to crap on. Song to Song captures so many things that no other film has ever captured. And so much of it is highly relatable. But just because its decadent also, this guy has to whine about it.
