Songwriter Reacts: Colter Wall - Thirteen Silver Dollars 

Colter does a GREAT version of Big Iron, too. I'm pretty sure he can't do wrong.

I love the reference to Blue Yodel #9. The Jimmie Rodgers classic, of course, starts with a line "'Standin on a corner/I didn't mean no harm". I believe Colter's meaning to the cop was, "I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm just sleeping one off here in the snow." Of course, the cop didn't get it and arrested him (apparently) for vagrancy, and then doubled-down and told him, " I bet you don't own a damn thing to your name." Then the chorus kicks in and Colter reminds him that he has his health, his John B Stetson, and a bottle full of Baby's Bluebird Wine. But he left his stash somewhere down in Preston, along (and this is very clever) with 13 Silver Dollars and "my mind". Obviously we can't "leave" our mind anywhere, so making this reference is like saying I'm a little out of my mind right now. Good way to put it in a song, Colter!

How reference to blue yodel number nine , it’s a song about a guy minding his own business and a cop messing with him.

I cannot express why but this is my favorite Colter Wall song. I play it a lot. I love the story telling and the references in it. Now you need to do his song John Byers also known as the Camaro song.

This is my favorite recording of this song. That smile Colter gives the bass player when he walks behind him; like he knows what Hes saying to him in his head. brings back my memories of playing in my punk rock band in HS. Having inside jokes about playing live or just playing music between the group.

Such a great song by Colter ,love the blue yodel reference Burt ,favourite part was when the fiddle player and the guys stepped up .Also the way he hammers those strings at the start ...always makes me smile

This was the first Colter Wall song I ever heard a year or so ago. Got me absolutely hooked on his music.

I NEED y’all to check out a band called The Wilder Blue, and start with a song called Janie Lynn. I’m not sure if it really qualifies as Americana (a lot of harmonies),but it’s definitely something you won’t hear on the radio and they need to be heard. I saw these guys live a week ago and haven’t stopped listening since!

There's a guy named Andy Hersey, an honest-to-God Arizona cowboy, who has some great tunes. For a killer story telling song, check out Compañero Blanco by him, if you're so inclined! He's no Colter, but pretty damn good in his own rights. Keep it up man!

I admit the first time I heard Colter, I really wasn't into it. Thank God he grew on me, if not I would have missed out on some d*mn good writing and talent. This is a great song, and his voice is like a slow pour of Whiskey. Mellow with a burn to follow it up. Great choice.

I got my health, a John B Stetson, I got me a bottle full if baby's bluebird wine... a sentiment I can understand.

Could you check out his song Bald Butte? (His album version) He has a brewery session video but I would say his album version is better.
